Review #theamericansocietyofmagicalnegroes Aren ( #justicesmith ) ist ein erfolgloser schwarzer Künstler der von Agent Roger ( #davidalangrier ) für einen Geheimbund rekrutiert wird. Dort lernen Schwarze Mithilfe von Magie das Weiße zufrieden sind. Doch Aren's erster Klient stellt Ihn auf eine harte Probe... Eines muss man "The American Society of Magical Negroes" lassen, die Fantasy-Liebes-Komödie hat durchaus 2-3 richtig tolle magische Szenen in denen man so ein wenig an "Harry Potter" erinnert wird. Als Anti-Rassismus Film funktioniert das Werk von Kobi Libii dagegen leider so gut wie gar nicht. Dabei ist die Idee eines Geheimbundes schwarzer Menschen mit magischen Kräften für eine bessere Welt tatsächlich ganz nett, verkommt aber schnell zu teils fragwürdigen Auswüchsen im Bezug darauf warum genau die People of Color alles tun müssen damit die Weißen zufrieden sind. Und weil diese seltsame Message in etwa so hoch über allem schwebt wie die Präsidentin der Society kann die ansonsten wirklich liebenswerte Lovestory nie so richtig zünden. Gerade wenn Aren und Lizzie Momente zu zweit haben spührt man deren Zuneigung zueinander, womit wir hiermit die stärksten Momente der Fantasy-Komödie sehen. Insgesamt aber fühlen sich die 104 Minuten deutlich länger an, was am schrecklich langsamen bzw. unkoordinierten Tempo der Handlung liegt. Insbesondere die ersten 60 Minuten ziehen sich wie Kaugummi während inhaltlich nichts außergewöhnlich spannendes passiert. Manche Charakterentwicklungen fallen zudem unglaubwürdig aus und der Cast passt sich so ein wenig dem Gesamtniveau des Films an, was aber wohl auch an den mäßigen Figurenvorlagen im Drehbuch liegen sollte. Irgendwie kein Wunder das der Film in den USA massiv an den Kinokassen untergegangen ist. Review Blankman 1994 DVD Rating: 4/5 Blankman is a silly take on the vigilante hero that’s funny in its own right without outstaying its welcome. This film was met with critical disdain on its initial release and I think it plays much better now. Filmmaker Mike Binder switches to comedy-parody from his previous films focused on character drama. Marlon Wayans at this point was attempting to find the right material for the leading character, but this would mark him down after the minor success of Mo’ Money. The film would prove to be a commercial disappointment and critics had no idea what to make of it. The superhero parody concept was anything new with Hero at Large being one of the few memorable ones, but none of them had been commercially successful. This film had the unfortunate task of opening one month after Jim Carrey’s The Mask grew into a huge box office and cultural sensation. I found this to be an underrated comedy that takes chances and the sequence with the mayor takes this in a more grounded direction. It’s enjoyable when you run with it and Wayans is certainly committed to his performance. This was a bold choice for everyone and sadly it never found a bigger audience. I might not be able to give a completely fair assessment on The Colour Purple because I missed the few minutes cause I was running late and the last 20 or so minutes because the projector overheated! I thought it was pretty good but pretty obvious it was an adaptation from a stage musical but it really brought to light a specific time period in a specific part of the world and it was horrifying to think about how freedom is so undermined by such poverty, prejudice and injustice. On a personal and societal level. The production design was spot on, I even liked a few of the songs and the story was pretty good too but it didn’t connect with me enough to go again and see the bits I missed! I didn’t realize that most of it would take place in the desert, so when it was mentioned, I thought I would easily get bored, but it was still very entertaining. The humor wasn’t over-the-top, and it was usually pretty innocent, which can be nice. All of the main characters were funny in their own ways, and the story was quite the adventure. Also, I assumed it had to do with the Army, and that was obviously true, but it was another reason as to why I thought I would’ve been disappointed, but I was actually pleasantly surprised. Furthermore, this is a short movie that still gets the story straight, and that’s always a plus. Overall, I thought this was a great comedy for a chill day and I wasn’t BLOWN AWAY, yet still very impressed. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 out of ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. Kitti: In the Army Now was enjoyable… at times. A film that focuses on mostly black characters spending their time trying to ensure white people remain as happy as possible? That couldn't possibly be divisive, could it? The American Society of Magical Negroes - a fantastical, satirical take on the dynamics of race in modern day America - is a film that I actually really enjoyed. While there are inherent flaws in using comedy to tackle the subject of race, movies like American Fiction have proven that it can be done to a very high standard, and while this isn't as high-brow as that, it hits the mark on the humour front and (more often than not) with its social commentary as well. David Alan Grier is fantastic in the mentor role as Roger, and An-Li Bogan also excels as Lizzie, making her someone I'll definitely be keeping an eye on in her future projects. The star however is Justice Smith as Aren, as for possibly the first time in his career he displays real assuredness as a leading man, something that he's only briefly hinted at up until this point. There's one truly excellent monologue in particular that cements him as a real talent and as an actor who keeps improving with each new role. There are undeniably some issues with the world building, and some of the messaging is very heavy handed and not exactly subtle, but it's also a story that keeps you engaged throughout, and despite some comments to the contrary to me it's a film that's very clearly in on the joke (SOSWAG, anyone?) It seemed like it took a while to pick up, but i really started to enjoy it about 45 minutes in, probably. The story was alright, but some more character backstory/character development could’ve been nice. Not really a key point of a comedy though. There were a bunch of parts in the middle and end that I thought were funny, most of them involving Tim Curry or David Alan Grier. They’re funny guys sometimes. Overall, this one wasn’t the best, but it was still pretty fun and enjoyable for the whole family. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. Kitti: I thought McHale’s Navy was enjoyable. I liked the comedy in it, and the characters were fun, too. Tim Curry played a funny stereotypical villain of the 90s, and the cheesiness of it is what made it great. David Alan Grier was fun to watch, as well, because his character was completely different than his character in Blankman. I feel like the movie was a bit slow sometimes, but I blame that on the fact that they introduced the villain so early in the movie. Because of that, by the time they actually got to the big mission, it felt like we were only 20 minutes into the movie. The American Society of Magical Negroes Movie Review: The American Society of Magical Negroes is a satirical comedy following aspiring artist Aren (Justice Smith) who is recruited into a mysterious society that helps reduce the insecurities of white people in order to create a less dangerous world. The Kobi Libii written and directed film is an initially funny and slightly clever satirical comedy that has enough clever ideas and commentary within its screenplay to make for interesting worldbuilding before the film strives to become more of a typical romantic comedy where Aren follows for graphic designer Lizzie (An-Li Bogan) only to have his graphic designer client Jason (Drew Tarver) also develop a crush on her. Where the film truly thrives is establishing its intriguing and funny concept where Aren is recruited by society member Roger (David Alan Grier) to become a society member and the film gives examples of how the organization has helped fight white insecurity since the early 1900s in several funny flashbacks that parody everything from The Green Mile to Driving Miss Daisy. There is some clever lines and good comedic timing from its cast in the first act especially from a scene-stealing David Alan Grier who is having fun as the stern yet understanding mentor Roger while Justice Smith is perfectly likable as the shy aspiring artist Aren who has to confront his own insecurities over the course of the film. There is some good set design within the society of magical negroes headquarters and the consistently funny setup to the premise makes the film's fairly predictable story a bit disappointing. While there is some initial charm to Aren and Lizzie meeting at a coffee shop with an elongated joke about Aren accidently spilling coffee on her, the film plays it safe with a story where Aren is assigned to help graphic designer Jason become more secure in his work life at social media company Meetbox where Lizzie also works. On the other hand, the film has some initial funny social commentary where Meetbox facial recognition software fails to recognize african americans that allows for funny gags about Meetbox CEO Mick (Rupert Friend) (Rating in Comments)
