When the children were young the kitchen table was covered in bright colours, patterns glue and glitter - not much has changed (except muted colours now appear and glitter has long gone!) It was the last day of my live online ‘Painting with Collage’ workshop today - I really enjoyed running the session. Time flew by! Sneak peek… I’ve been pulling an inspiration board together that encapsulates everything I’m exploring in my next series of work - this image is just a small section. I think the phrase ‘bringing the outside in’ sums up my inspiration but not in the sense of what I can see outside but the feeling of being outside. So maybe I should say ‘bringing the inside out’? Waste not want not… Carved a pattern in the end of a cork today (yes I must have too much time!) and used it to create some pattern using the gel plate. Exploring how to represent water… I’m particularly looking at calmer water and how different tools and techniques create different finishes. At the moment I like how using lots of glazes gives a depth to the water and how a stipple effect gives the effect of light. The silicon wedge was good to use to both apply and remove paint. Ink… Making marks - liquid ink, solid ink blocks, dry & wet paper, on white & over colour. Using: twigs, lids, brushes, cocktail sticks, toothbrush, comb etc - I’m sure you get the idea! Last page in the sketchbook… I use sketchbooks for lots of different purposes - this one is for very quick landscapes & seascapes either warming up before a painting session or, in this case, using up paint on the palette after a session. I mask off the edges and just paint; sometimes I add notes about materials & tools I’ve used but not today. Original paintings… There’s something really special about owning an original piece of work. Each time I look at work I have bought I can ‘feel’ the marks made and am drawn into the depths of layers created by the artist capturing an atmosphere. It’s like being taken on a journey in my memory. This piece ‘Dodging Waves’ is inspired by time on the coast; scrambling back from rock-pooling as the tide comes in. I’ve been sketching… A trip up to the dales with lots of time outside getting blown away by the wind (& rain at times!) Loved the patterns of stone walls crisscrossing the lower slopes - and the change of colour as you got higher. Far more trees than I remembered but with it being winter the views felt just as open with trees silhouetted. Collaging… I use collage rather like paint - layer upon layer building up landscapes and seascapes. I tend to reserve it for my sketchbook and often find results stimulate ideas for paintings. This first piece certainly has sparked some ideas that when I’m back in the studio will be explored. How do you use sketchbooks? I’m stewarding @whitechalkgallery Fine Art today and I thought I’d take a look through my sketchbooks on display at the ‘Embracing the Elements’ exhibition. I found some developmental sketches that led to a few of the pieces on display that I thought I’d share. Whilst I play with ideas and colours in a sketchbook I don’t actually use the material as reference when I paint. At that point the sketchbook is firmly shut and the painting is from an amalgamation of memories. As I paint the painting develops its own life as you can see in this piece ‘Silence Beckons’. It’s not the only way I use sketchbooks but I do find it useful as a way to embed memories and explore ideas. Do you have favourites? Absolutely love this painting…well to totally clear there are lots that I love but this is one of them! ‘Fading Light’ was one of those paintings that lived on my wall in the studio for a while. I’d have flurries of sessions on it enjoying how it evolved until one day I walked into the studio and thought ‘wow that works!’ Finished in a St. Ives frame by @swan_artworks it still looks stunning to me. How do you start a painting? I paint from an amalgamation of memories and part of my process (at times), is to play with those fragments of memories in my sketchbook - considering colour, composition and how I want to pull them together into a painting. I then close my sketchbook and just paint. The painting will of course evolve once paint starts to be applied which is always exciting. This is how ‘Fragments’ came together: flashes of colour, fleeting indistinct shapes in my mind all coming together in a patchwork of considered marks. Are you dreaming of the coast? On this cold bright day (the photo was on a warmer day!)
