Lake George, 1848 by Thomas Addison Richards. Richards was born in England but immigrated to the U.S. with his family in 1831, growing up in New York. Known widely as a painter of Southern landscapes, he began his professional career as an artist in Georgia and later South Carolina. He was well traveled and is known to have painted in the Catskills Mountains and Lake George, as well as the American West. Interestingly, the scene depicted in Lake George of 1848 was also painted by Sanford Gifford the following year. Richards exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Brooklyn Art Association.
