Released on this day in 2021. “Runnin’ Down a Dream: A Tribute to Tom Petty,” from Lucinda Williams. Lucinda is working to help independent music venues during the time of Covid. The 6 episode “Lu’s Jukebox” series has launched with a series of mostly full band, HD video performances in the studio, featuring a themed set of songs by other artists she has curated. The first episode kicked off last year, with “Running Down A Dream: A Tribute To Tom Petty,” featuring songs from his celebrated career in advance of his 70th Birthday. “We’ve actually wanted to do a cover series for a long time now, but never had the time with my touring schedule,” Lucinda Williams told Rolling Stone recently. “I guess the silver lining in all of this has been to be able to really get inside the songs of some of my favorite artists - see what makes them tick.” Just last week the 1st episode of “Lu’s Jukebox” went out online. The first show was dedicated to the music of Tom Petty. She told viewers how she first met him when she was his support act. She was not very well known at the time and Tom took it upon himself to come out on stage and introduce her, urging his fans to pay attention to the opening act. Lucinda only plays 2 songs from that Greatest Hits album, “Runnin’ Down A Dream,” and “I Won’t Back Down.” She explained that she went for songs that she felt some connection with. The song “Gainesville” for example is an outtake that was 1st released after Tom’s death. Her voice is well suited to his music and she does Petty justice. Her band is awesome and that makes this work well. The album finishes with a new song, “Stolen Moments,” which Lucinda wrote with Tom in mind. She dedicates it to his widow. I’ve heard many people refer to this, as one of his finest works, a collection of country Classics, interpreted by some of the genres, best female vocalist… With one of the greatest songwriters of all time! Must admit that I am a big John Prine fan myself and after listening to this, I too, would rank this up as one of my favourites by him. There are a lot of highlights on this record for me, including the Patty Loveless duet ‘Back Street Affair’, as well as the couple of duets he shares with Melba Montgomery & Connie Smith. I must also include the beautiful duets with Iris DeMent and Lucinda Williams.
