March Theme: Lily of the Nile and Swallowtail Moth Its super duper late, worked on it for more than a month. I hope you guys don't mind. March is usually a really tough month for me, and I guess this year's was just more difficult than the other years and I needed a few days for myself. I didn't expect this to turn out okay, it started out so poorly, I was struggling to get the sketch all done, then when I started painting it, I chosen the wrong colors and had to redo that. I wasn't really happy with how I painted it, I could've definitely done some stuff better, one that I've done before just with a different subject, but the same exact process. But I was just struggling. And thinking about it, I painted a similar one to this one before, and it was alright, just a different subject but basically the same process but I was just struggling so much and I was so ready to give up on it. I decided to push through despite my disappointment in myself, if anything I could just take it as a loss and learn from there. But surprisingly everything came out better in the end than what I expected it to be, especially with the yellow background. Looking at it now it ain't that bad. The narrators were incredible and I’m a pretty tough critic when it comes to audiobook narration! 🧡 ⭐️ Another step outside of my general genre was Lily of the Nile by @stephanie.dray - while it had elements of magical realism and romance, those took a back seat to the depth of historical research clearly portrayed in this story!! I loved the world-building and found myself consuming all kinds of facts about Cleopatra and Roman histories!! I bought the sequel but haven’t started it yet! Can’t wait!! 🔆 ⭐️ I am learning to love a little steampunk in my life and A Lady’s Guide to Marvels and Misadventures was the perfect combination of romance, steampunk, and Christianity. No. 5 Lily of the Nile. This has been my favorite so far. A more complex challenge, and a more complete botanical painting. I wanted to challenge myself to using only three transparent colours and mix every shade I needed from those three colours. So this was as much an exercise in paint mixing as anything else. French Ultramarine would have been my blue of choice. Unfortunately I didn’t have it, so I was forced to add a hint of Windsor Violet to a Windsor Blue to get the right shade for the buds. Apart from that, the whole painting is composed out of these three colours: Windsor Blue (green shade) Green Gold Quinacridone Red. My approach was a bit more organized this time around. After the two pansies I had gained some confidence and relaxed a bit. I was trying to limit my layers, to not do too much at once and keep the layers light enough for the paper to shine through. The buds were the hardest part and gave me quite the headache just trying to separate them out. I painted them one by one, but never next to each other, making sure each bud was completely dry before I painted the one right next to it. This is also my first attempt at adding some loose background interest. It terrified me, so I went in very lightly and added some deliberate blooms (dropping clean water onto the damp pigment) and letting whatever happened to the pigments be. At this point I also realized that I’m done with the little dots at the bottom. In the other paintings they didn’t look so out of place, but in this one, where every shade was a mixture of the three, the pure pigment dots seemed garish in contrast, and I felt they spoiled the painting right as I crossed the finish line. Fortunately I had left enough space to crop them out. I’ve found them to be incredibly useful for colour correcting my picture digitally, so I will paint them on a separate slip in the future.

After two weeks of intensive pattern making, I’m finally able to turn my recent digital painting into a pattern mini collection. Dubbed “Summer Flowers”, the collection represents some of the flowers I really love seeing in Melbourne during summer, especially Lily of the Nile.
