Winsor Terrace in Beckton on bus route 101. In 1870 the Gas, Light & Coke Company began producing gas in this area of London. The coal arrived by boat and was unloaded at the firm's jetties along the Thames and at Barking Creek. Winsor Terrace was originally the firm's own private road for their own use. Several original properties survive on Winsor Terrace, with two-up-two-downs for the workers and generously proportioned end-of-terrace houses for foremen. The name Winsor comes from Freidrich Winzer who founded the company in 1812. By 1870, the head of the company was Simon Beck, who installed the firm's railway system and built houses for his employees. That is why the area is called Beckton. The Victorians had discovered a way to produce gas from coal, which was Beckton’s main activity. Many industries also used this process’s by-products to manufacture other products such as coal tar, ammonia and disinfectants. However, the Gas, Light and Coke Company decided pretty early on that it would be more profitable to use their by-products rather than sell them to other manufacturers. In 1879, the company set up the Beckton Products Works, becoming the UK’s largest manufacturer of tar and ammonia by-products. At its peak, the gasworks is thought to have employed 10,000 men. In the late 1940s, nationalisation saw the gasworks pass into the hands of the North Thames Gas Board. Over time, natural gas reserves in the North Sea made many gasworks like Beckton relatively redundant, and the plant was closed down in 1969, as it could not compete with natural gas prices. I love everything about this bar and this building. The interior is 10/10 and it’s the best place for chilled vibes with friends. Today is #internationalworkersday 💪 The museum has many historical records telling us about the real people who worked for the Grand Junction Water Works Company, such as E.C Jacob who's job in 1905 was a messenger.📨 He was the lowest paid adult worker on the site at 12 shillings and six pence a week. The Great Exhibition opened on this day in 1851. The exhibition was inside a glass temporary structure the Crystal Palace which was located at Hyde Park. Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese pub. One of the most historic pubs in London. There was a pub at this location since 1538. The pub was rebuilt after the fire. One thing is clear: sovereigns come and go. The pub stands. We had a dinner reservation here but ended up going to a different place. "Wild about babies" 🦍 📍 Paternoster Square Near St. Paul's Cathedral, London Have you seen the latest free art instalment near St. Paul's? These animal statues have been in the square since January 2024, illustrating a mother gorilla watching over smaller, endangered baby animals. I was quite amazed at the sheer size of the 3-meter gorilla, especially with all the fine details. Their placement near the cathedral serves for a really beautiful photo, too. You'd be surprised how quiet the area was. The majority of people were wandering around the outside of the cathedral only, whilst this was only a few steps away, hidden in a courtyard away from the main tourist hotspot. I've since noted online about some other similar art installations that I'd love to go and see. One of a dozen bollards at St Katharine's Docks on bus route 100. The group of 12 bollards at the entrance lock of St Katharine's Docks in Wapping has been designated grade II listed. They are made of cast iron and on the top of each is written "St Katharine by the Tower". This is the name of the hospital that originally stood on the site, founded in the twelfth century, and which was demolished in the 1820s, along with over a thousand houses, slum accommodation for 11,300 people - in order for the docks to be built. The bollards were built in 1828 to the designs of the Scottish civil engineer, Thomas Telford. As well as the writing on the top, each bollard features a relief of Saint Katharine, holding a sword in her left hand and standing by a wheel, both of which are the instruments of her martyrdom. St Katharine was an aristocrat living in the 4th century who refused the Emperor Maximilian and was punished by being tortured on a spiked wheel before being beheaded. Manifold sculpture at Moorgate station on bus route 100. This bronze sculpture is by British artist Conrad Shawcross with its full title of Manifold (Major Third) 5:4. It's located outside the Elizabeth line entrance to Moorgate station and is part of the Art on the Underground project. The large bronze sculpture represents a chord falling into silence and is taken from observations of a Victorian pendulum-driven harmonograph (a mechanical apparatus that employs two pendulums that draw the oscillation of a sound wave) to map the complex shape of a specific piano chord that is falling into silence. Mr Shawcross specialises in mechanical sculptures based on philosophical and scientific ideas and is a member of the Royal Academy of Arts. He was commissioned to make this sculpture as part of the Crossrail Art Programme and it was placed here in September 2023. The Gun is a Grade II listed public house at 27 Coldharbour, in the isle of Dogs. It takes its name from the cannon which was fired when the West India Docks first opened in 1802. The pub has occupied the plot of 27 Coldharbour since the early 18th century under various trading names. It was first called The King and Queen in 1722 before being renamed to The Rose and Crown in 1725 and later Ramsgate Pink in 1745. It took on its current name, The Gun, in 1771. Lord Horatio Nelson is commonly associated with The Gun having lived locally and where it is said that he visited the docks to inspect the guns. In addition, he would frequent the pub to secretly meet Lady Emma Hamilton in an upstairs room (now called The River Room) for their affair. There is also a long association with smugglers landing contraband on the site and distributing it via a hidden tunnel. To this day there is still a spy-hole in the secret circular staircase to watch out for “The Revenue Men”. In this poem, he questions why religious worship should be grounded in earthly suffering and suggests a benevolent God would rather see his children warm and fed, as they might be in a pub. Today, Soho’s concentration of pubs significantly outnumbers that of its churches, though in recent times its bohemian spirit has been chiselled away by property investors, rising prices and mismanagement by local authorities.
