Nighttime Whispers of Bodie Under the dance of the cosmos, the L. Johl House stands as a beacon of the past, bathed in light against the night. This light painting photograph weaves together the art of the celestial with the history embedded in the walls of Bodie Ghost Town's structures. The star trails, those celestial brushstrokes across the heavens, tell a tale of Earth’s unrelenting path around its axis. Animas Forks, Colorado🇺🇸 became a mining⛏️town in 1873 and was flourishing by 1883 with 30 cabins, a hotel, saloon, post office📮and general store. But by 1910 the mining had stopped and by 1920 it had become a ghost👻 town. The name “Yellow Dog” bears a weighty legacy, stemming from the residents’ reluctance to challenge the company and unionize. They traded their voices for housing and higher wages while submitting to any of the company’s demands earning them the moniker of cowardice. William “Billie” Denio homesteaded in this remote location. It is known as Camp Denio and Billie Denio’s Place. I love it when I find little treasures. I didn’t expect to find an old photo of Denio Camp, but I came across it at the Library of Congress. The title is “Camp Denio, 5 Miles From Scene of Murder, 1911.” The photo was part of a series depicting the Battle of Kelley Creek between Native Americans and law enforcement. Rhyolite is a Death Valley ghost town in Nevada. It was a product of the gold boom and the nearby Montgomery Shoshone Mine. Unlike most western mining towns, which featured quickly built wooden buildings, Rhyolite features a large number of stone structures, the ruins of which are still standing today. The town was a tent encampment in 1905, and had roughly 10,000 residents by 1907. Unfortunately for the people of Rhyolite, the local mine proved to be far less rich than anticipated. The mine was operating at a loss by 1910, and closed in 1911. By 1920, the town's population had dwindled to just 14. In 1922, the town had just one resident, and he died in 1924, leaving Rhyolite uninhabited. The last train left the station in Rhyolite in July 1914. Ghost Town Living by Brent Underwood Genre: Biography, California history, nonfiction My rating: 4.25 • Goodreads: 4.12 • StoryGraph: 4.42 My husband got me hooked on watching Brent’s YouTube channel and I have been to Cerro Gordo to visit once so far. I love the Sierra Nevada and surrounding areas, and visiting a once abandoned ghost town that’s being resurrected is just up my alley of hobbies. The Ghost Town Living YouTube channel is one of the (very) few that I watch and I’ve enjoyed watching Brent’s four year journey so far. My husband pre-ordered the book for me (I may not have bought it on my own), and I’m really glad he did because I really liked the deeper dive into the history of the town and Brent’s take on some of the major milestones in the town under his watch. I have heard a lot of these stories and anecdotes through the vlogs and online posts but it was still enjoyable to have those expanded on in his words. The whole water/Owens Lake/Mulholland/LADWP situation has always held my interest with its effects in this region so I was particularly interested in the Water section of the book. Although I don’t necessarily agree with some of Brent’s larger worldviews that he mentions in the book, and although it dimmed my reading experience a bit, I can appreciate that his experiences so far have led him to those opinions and I am still intrigued in his overall story at Cerro Gordo and a fan of the work he’s doing there. It’s been great to watch Brent’s progress so far in the town and I am sure that his passion, combined with the following he’s generated through his YouTube channel and now his book, will transform this town into everything he envisions it can be one day. Silverado Mine & the Budding Poet The drive through Sweetwater is a beautiful alternative route from Carson Valley to Bridgeport. Breathtaking views line the road, but once you leave the pavement, there is a wealth of history to explore. Miners worked Silverado from the 1860s to 1950s, and the ruins of the mill greet visitors. Work in progress on our 1914 Jerome house…now digging out the front of the basement area to add a block wall. Uncovering old windows on the front of the house after the plaster got chipped off! Right when we pulled up to the town of Clifton this old building just jumped out to me. I had to take its photo but I was not sure why. After looking at it the building reminded me of some of the buildings I grew up seeing in my hometown of Pahrump NV. There was an old farm mill that I used to look at and just wonder about its story. I would always gaze at it from far away(because I was young and my parents always drive by super fast and never stopped) which is why I took the photo across the street. Schwab bought the mine and invested heavily in the town.🏢 _____________________________________________________________ ✷1907: Rhyolite had electric lights💡, water mains🚰, telephones☎️, newspapers🗞, a hospital🏥, a school🏫, an opera house, and a stock exchange💲. _____________________________________________________________ ✷1911: The mine closed (essentially due to the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and the financial panic of 1907). Adventuring a couple of years ago near a northern Michigan town named Deward. Deward is now a state reserve area open to hunting and fishing. Not much is left of the town but periodically you can find home foundations and pieces of plates and even a stove door. #MeersOklahoma. The Lil Green Bronco takes us on a tour of some western Oklahoma ghost towns. This old store, now a burger joint, was put on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 as the Meers Mining Camp. It is the only structure remaining of the local gold rush days. Built in 1901 and was the Meers Post Office until 1989. Spanish explorers first started looking for gold in the Wichita Mountains in the sixteenth century. A couple of their crude arrastras remain unmarked in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. There was no gold in the Wichitas.
