We usually acquire a wagtail throughout winter which hangs around the garden most days ~ this year we had two 💚 I am today years old ~ my auto ID in my photo app tells me it’s a white wagtail (I think pied wagtails belong to white wagtails but not all white wagtails can be pied wagtails ?!? 🤔) White wagtails (Motacilla alba) are a common breeding bird in nearly all European countries outside of Britain and Ireland. Pied wagtails (Motacilla yarrelli) breed commonly in Britain and Ireland. BUT occasionally the alba breeds in Scotland, especially in the Northern Isles, and has paired with yarrellii or has bred in pure alba pairs. Sometimes many migrant alba pass through Britain too 🤷🏼♀️ The key difference between the two is in the colouring, the pied wagtail has blackish upperparts and flanks, while these parts are grey in the white wagtail. The one in my photo looks grey. BUT WAIT…. female pied wagtails can appear more grey than black, then there’s age, time of the year, and hybridisation to consider which all make for various shades of grey, plus differences in colouration and the placement of colour 🙈 There’s an excellent document “White Wagtail and Pied Wagtail: a new look” available on ResearchGate, but it gives me a sore head trying to make sense of it all. In conclusion I now have no idea what it is and if you’ve managed to read all this way congratulations to you 🥳 If you know which it is, comment below please and help solve my wagtail mystery! Good night from beautiful and peaceful Orkney. The chance to see local fauna from the van is fantastic here. Just today, we have seen an otter, another Orkney vole, and two brown hares bopping. Heard (but didn't see) a short-eared owl and spotted a sanderling at the shoreline. Met an Orcadian farmer on his tractor who was quite interested in us, he was a real good egg. Talked about the dogs we love getting old, and a little local history that we otherwise would not have known. Pete got to spend most of his day outdoors and be King of all he surveys, he is all tuckered out now.
