Ruthven Barracks were built by George I’s government in the early 1700s after the failed Jacobite uprising of 1715. The troops stationed there were to maintain law and order and enforce the Disarming Act of 1716. The barracks saw action twice. A 300-strong Jacobite attack failed to take the barracks in 1745, but a more heavily-armed attack the next year forced the barracks’ surrender. Caerlaverock Castle near Dumfries. Caerlaverock’s triangular shape is unique among British castles. A walk around the castle gives a sense of its strength, economy of form and pleasing geometry. Three lengths of defensive curtain wall are linked at their three angles by high corner towers. On the north side is an impressive twin-towered gatehouse, where the Maxwells had their private rooms. The Maxwells repaired and upgraded Caerlaverock over the years. The impressive machicolations (slotted defences) at the top of each tower date from the late 1300s or early 1400s – by which time the Wars of Independence with England had taken their toll. Inside the castle walls is the remarkable Nithsdale Lodging, built in the 1630s by Robert Maxwell, 1st Earl of Nithsdale. 📌 Dumbarton castle. “Dumbarton Castle guards the point where the River Leven joins the River Clyde. Its recorded history goes back 1,500 years. Back then, the place was known as Alt Clut (‘Rock of the Clyde’). Later it became known by the Gaelic name Dun Breatann (‘Fortress of the Britons’) from which the name Dumbarton is derived. In the 1220s, the castle was a border stronghold – the Norwegian frontier lay just 10 miles downriver. The Treaty of Perth (1266) gave control of the Western Isles to the Scottish Crown, removing the threat from Norway – but an even greater menace from England soon replaced it. Dumbarton was an important royal castle in the Middle Ages. In later centuries, Dumbarton Rock became a mighty garrison fortress, its defences packed with guns. Re-use and adaptation of existing buildings can be both more environmentally friendly and often more cost-effective than constructing new, with the additional benefit of preserving a piece of history. Built in the mid-to-late 1800’s to accompany the adjacent Panbride House, Panbride stables is an excellent example of this ethos where, without intervention, this Category B listed building would likely have been left to deteriorate beyond rescue. Through a series of feasibility studies, close engagement with Angus Council and Historic Scotland, detailed and technical design, and through the property changing hands amid construction, Wellwood Leslie Architects assisted several clients to successfully strip-out, refurbish, and convert the existing stables to form five luxury boutique holiday rental units. The Stables and House are excellent examples of domestic Jacobean styled Architecture and are Category B Listed. Wellwood Leslie guided and led a multi-disciplinary design team to deliver an extensive package of refurbishment works, drawing on years of experience working with listed and historic buildings to ensure period features were retained and enhanced through sensitive intervention. The day part 2 - before heading on to our destination in Stirling we ( @ferguspm )had lunch in one of the oldest pubs in Scotland and reputed to be the most haunted! Have seen posts about it on Instagram over the years so it was great to check it out - it is very close to Loch Lomond - The Dover’s Inn its over 300 years old and boasts Rob Roy as a guest - it looks that old too - love that it hasn’t been rarified in any way and it is also full of old taxidermy animals under glass - it works here IMO what can I say 😉 / the food was quite brilliant so definitely recommend it for that alone ! #historicscotland #canadiantourist #artistlife
Throwback to when we received the keys for The Hollies 🔑 A different view for you here! On this day 5 years ago, we received the keys for The Hollies. We were actually on holiday in Barbados at the time - we had planned to document the refurb but that all ground to a halt due to lockdown and we were also 400 miles away! Over the next couple of months, we are going to be sharing some photos of the work that went into creating The Hollies as we now know it. You don’t often see photos of us on here, but here is a throwback to the day we brought our families to the Hollies for the first time. It’s fair to say they thought we were nuts for buying this derelict building! A real highlight was being shown around by the previous owner Jimmy, who has sadly now passed away. Despite being almost 90 at the time, he was running up and down all the stairs and delighting us all with stories of the Hollies and the band he used to play in. It’s nice that the music connection has continued as the Hollies used to be THE place for live music. Today part 1 : today @ferguspm and I headed out for Stirling this morning taking a route that brought us through Kilmartin’s Glen / it is Britain’s richest archaeological area / we just saw a small sampling of the medieval grave slabs of Celtic carvings and then a little further out of the town the standing stones - smack dab in a sheep field which made it even better / took some photos of the information signs - brilliant to see ;) #archaeology #historicscotland #canadiantourist #artistlife
Dumbarton Castle Dumbarton Castle guards the point where the River Leven joins the River Clyde. Its recorded history goes back 1,500 years. Back then, the place was known as Alt Clut (‘Rock of the Clyde’). Later it became known by the Gaelic name Dun Breatann (‘Fortress of the Britons’) from which the name Dumbarton is derived. In the 1220s, the castle was a border stronghold – the Norwegian frontier lay just 10 miles downriver. The Treaty of Perth (1266) gave control of the Western Isles to the Scottish Crown, removing the threat from Norway – but an even greater menace from England soon replaced it. Dumbarton was an important royal castle in the Middle Ages. In later centuries, Dumbarton Rock became a mighty garrison fortress, its defences packed with guns. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to step back in time 5,000 years? If you've been lucky enough to get up close with the incredible Stones of Stenness, maybe you have. ⏲ This astonishing set of monoliths may well be the oldest henge monument in the British Isles; four colossal stones dated to around 3100 – 2900 BC, on the mainland of Orkney. Today, four remain standing, of a possible twelve -- although excavations around 50 years ago discovered that the circle was never completed; some holes had never been filled. Standing 6 metres tall (nearly 20 feet in height), the thin blades of stone have been traced to at least five different sources, and were originally encircled by a rock-cut ditch. Sited in the heart of Neolithic Orkney, near to the Ring of Brodgar and Maeshowe, the stones speak of an early and sophisticated society in northern Britain. The number of early prehistoric monuments and associated settlements in the area indicates that it was a very special place to the early inhabitants of Orkney. The function of the Stones is unclear; our best guess is they were involved in activities and ceremonies celebrating the relationship between living and past communities. As a place to remember those from previous generations, Stenness is an awe-inspiring place, and definitely one for the bucket list if you are lucky enough to visit the Orkney Islands. "More than 75% of respondents in the referendum voted Yes to retain the social housing and community centre" The Architects' Journal has just published an important letter from the Wyndford Residents Union, which confirms the result of a legitimate and well organised public referendum involving, this time, all the residents of the Wyndford Estate. It counters the referendum put out before by the housing association, which claimed that the people on the estate wanted the high flats demolished and the site developed. I attach it here. This month's Urban Realm magazine also sums up perfectly why the proposal to demolish the high flats and replace them with a "could be anywhere" proposal should be resisted by the profession; for it fails to recognise the site's amenity, unique qualities and context. All summed up perfectly by the UR editor writer in the last paragraph " An opportunity exists to capitalise on the landscape and amenity of a West End location, providing better access to the city, university and Kelvingrove park but this scheme is not it" WRU call for a Public Hearing, that seems fair to me.
