"La folie des grandeurs" ✨👑 During my trip in Scotland I had the opportunity to sleep in some FANTASTIC castles. When you arrive it seems so big, so immense and after a few days, because we are adaptable creatures, you adapt yourself to the environment and you could almost say that "it's not that big after all". I totally understand why we always want more. It's in human nature, it's in us. For aeon we have walked the earth to survive, gathered food, built cities and fought wars in order to grow. It's an evolutionary instinct. Now when you look closely at history you realize that there isn't a Versailles everywhere so it means that even tho we want more we are wise and open to reason to stop beyond the absurd. In my element 😍🏔️ Kintail summits are hard won. You start from sea level and there are two directions - straight up or straight down. It’s hard to think of a more mountainous place in Scotland. Poor Weather Navigation 🧭 Fab day with this lovely bunch teaching navigation for those poor weather / low visibility days. I always start these by refreshing the basics to make sure everyone gets a little bit of refresh of the basics before we add in any more. Then it was onto pacings, bearings, leap frogging (simulating use of sighting objects ahead / or as a tactic) and strategy. Once we had run through all the tools and had some lunch with the lovely views, we moved onto focus on strategy. A key part of navigation is not just the wide range of tools we can use but knowing when to use them. Ultimately this is the part where just trying different strategies and seeing if it worked was it efficient or whether some other way because apparent while on the move. So in teams the group had the same points but got to try their team strategy and then we'd run through each one after each leg. Discussing pros & cons and improvements. Back to some hill walking and landscape photography this weekend in the wilderness up and behind Kinlochleven near Glencoe. There’s a beautiful small loch (lochan) at @ 700m called Coire an Lochain between the two munro mountains which overlook Loch Eilde Mor. Why I love shooting at sunset. Whenever I chat to couples about timings, I often recommend sunset as my favoured time of day to finish, if that fits into your elopement day plans, of course. Here are three of the main reasons sunset is my favourite time of day: 1. You’ve had all day to get used to the camera, so by the time sunset comes around, you’re likely relaxed and more comfortable. So, when we’re in that lovely low light at sunset, we’re in the best position to make the most amazing photos. 2. It’s often less crowded, particularly through the late Spring-Summer seasons when sunset is quite late. This means there’s less noise, less people, and it feels like the landscape is your own. 3. It’s no secret that us photographers aren’t too keen on those clear blue skies, with harsh sunlight. I much prefer making photos in low light or on cloudy days, where we can make use of all of that mood. If the weather forecast says it’s due to be a sunny day, then finishing at sunset means we can get that beautiful golden hour light.
