EDIT - This is my 9th cyclone season in Mauritius and I've never seen anything like this - torrential rain has turned the roads into rivers, and sadly people were told to go to work today and now many are trapped in offices whilst their cars have floated away on the road-rivers (luckily schools were closed). 8 deaths have already been registered. This is a real catastrophe 😢 ----------- Don’t judge me but... ...there’s a cyclone headed towards Mauritius and I’m getting really excited 💃 I love the battening down of the hatches and staying holed up inside. And there’s something so fascinating to me about Mother Nature letting herself run wild. I love the reminder of how small and insignificant we are, and how tiny our problems are. (I also LOVE thunderstorms.) The girls and I have been excitedly talking about what we’ll do, what we’ll watch (if we have electricity) and what games we’ll play. Cyclone vibe is like no other vibe I’ve ever known. Also I think because Mauritius does cyclones so well I know we’re safe, so we can enjoy without worrying. The authorities do not mess with cyclones and there’s a really strict protocol in place, so we know what to do and when. On a more serious note - I am incredibly grateful for the roof over my head and a safe place to shelter from the storm. I also know that cyclones are not something to joke about, but in Mauritius I would hazard a guess that more people die on the roads in just one year then have been killed by cyclones since records began here. This cyclone - Belal - looks like it’s going to be closest to us on Monday, so if I’m suddenly not online it means electricity or the Internet or both are down. 28.2 inches of mercury recorded at 7am this morning (going up when I took the pic). Equate to approx 955mb, the hurricane of '87 recorded 953 I believe! We are tucked down here a bit but mostly exposed to the NW so I was a bit worried but all is well (at the moment). We are on a borehole so I filled up loads of containers with water last night as if we had (have) a power cut we have no water! Thankfully we are not reliant on electric for heat and cooking (I know we should be really!) as we do get power cuts alot, but so far........ (I will probably have put a jinx on it now 😂). Might try to pop down to our local later to watch the waves (safely of course!) Stay safe everyone. EDITED to say that apparently the Met Office recorded 953.3 at Plymouth and 958.8 at St Athans (Wales) and we are inbetween the two (our S&R helicopters often come from St Athans, not that I have ever needed one, yet!). #stormciarán #devon #lovedevon #lovestorms #warmanddry #wildweather
