Jubilee Pavement, @exetercathedral Exeter Cathedral’s medieval Quire was opened on Monday 25 March, following major conservation and improvement works. The original builders of the 14th century sought to create a Quire where every surface was richly decorated. They laid a beautiful floor of inlaid medieval tiles, but this was lost long ago, being replaced by a Georgian pavement, replaced in turn by G.G. Scott’s magnificent recreation of a grand medieval floor in the 1870s. This too suffered damage and was replaced by a plain stone floor in 1963. The Quire – an area housing some of the cathedral’s most significant and historic architectural features, including 13th century tip-up seats known as ‘misericords’ and an 18 metre tall wooden bishop’s throne dating from the early 14th century. The improvements include preparations for a more efficient underfloor heating system to make the Quire a more comfortable place for services, community gatherings and events, while also helping to reduce the cathedral’s carbon footprint. A new floor tile design, named the ‘Jubilee Pavement’, has also been installed and is based on the work of 19th century architect, Sir George Gilbert Scott, the designer of four elaborate tiled floors in the high altar section of the Quire.
