The second was King’s Day. A day when trading rules/ licenses are suspended, allowing anyone to sell products and experiences. The result is a multi-generational festival of hustle where often it’s the kids that sell, and the parents ‘caretake’, hover or help. What’s different here is that these are real people, selling real products, to real people. Old school bartering. Growing brands through hand-to-hand combat as they fight for early customers. On the 30 June 1863, a 22 year old boy wrote to his mum. ‘Dear Mummy!,’ 22-year-old Gerard Heineken began this letter. He’d just spoken to two commissioners and learnt that a famous brewery from 1592 was distressed, valued at only 86,400 guilders (about. €63mill today) so not very much! He asked, ‘Wouldn’t you agree?’ Gerard was still a minor and not burdened by any knowledge of beer brewing. Beer consumption in NL had declined considerably since the 17th century. Compost 🤎🤎🤎 We spent a good bit of yesterday turning over our compost and leaf-mould boxes and patting each other on the back for the quantity and quality of our haul 😂 I think we’ve nailed this one!! We have always composted, but early days at The Orchard had us spending a fortune on commercial compost, we never had enough and I always felt bad about all the plastic bags we were left with. Gradually, we’ve learned through trial and error and by following loads of gardeners on here how to make good compost and leaf-mould and in big enough quantities. I’m in awe of how dead plants and grass cuttings, waste paper, and what comes out of the hen run is then broken down by worms and beetles, fungi and micro organisms that we can’t see. The result in a few months is dark, sweet smelling earth, AND compost recycles minerals and nutrients that are released and absorbed by new plants and used in their growth. The cycle is phenomenal as more and more we understand how the land produces absolutely everything we need, from seed to crop, through harvest and back to seed. #compost #organic #nature #nochemicals #nopesticides
