As part of MaerzMusik 2024, “Contemplations into the Radical Others” continues to set productive accents in its examination of Lucia Dlugoszewski’s work. The second part of the project, devised in collaboration with Ensemble Musikfabrik, will open at Radialsystem with a lecture and a concert showcasing a few of her works that were created through her collaboration with the Erick Hawkins Dance Company. Additionally, two newly commissioned works by Bethan Morgan-Williams and Mazyar Kashian create an interdisciplinary dialogue that mediates between generations and beyond conventions. What an honor! 🎉 Klangforum Wien is delighted to be awarded the @schallplattenkritik (German Record Critics’ Award) for its recording of the first comprehensive sound portrait of the Polish-American composer Lucia Dlugoszewski. Conducted by Johannes Kalitzke, Tim Anderson and Ilan Volkov and featuring the trumpet player Peter Evans, the double album receives the award in the category “Contemporary Music”. The recording, released on the label @xxcollegnoxx, covers both Dlugoszewski’s early and mature creative periods between the 1950s and the 1990s, and includes chamber and orchestral works, canonical masterpieces and phonographic premieres. For the first time ever, the pieces Abyss and Caress (1975), Each Time You Carry Me This Way (1993) and Avanti (1980) can be heard on a recording. Nina Polaschegg for the jury: “The result is powerful music in which rhythmic elements dovetail snugly with compositional thoughts on tone colour, interaction and development. Lucia Dlugoszewski is going her own way – despite resistance from the »scene«. I knew nothing about Lucia Dlugoszewski before listening to this album and it absolutely blew me away. Apart from being a prolific composer, she was also a choreographer and inventor, creating over 100 musical instruments. Dlugoszewski moved to New York City and began composing in earnest after an unsuccessful application to medical school. THANK YOU to whoever turned her down! | Nachklang: Fliehkräfte | Die Musik von Lucia Dlugoszewski wurde bei unserem Zykluskonzert gestern Abend im @wienerkonzerthaus vom Publikum enthusiastisch aufgenommen. Eine wahrhaft großartige Wiederentdeckung. Anlässlich der Veröffentlichung unseres Doppelalbums “Lucia Dlugoszewski - Abyss and Caress” stand das Streichquartett 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘳𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘙𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘖𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 sowie das Opus Magnum 𝘍𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘭𝘦 𝘍𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 auf dem Programm. Ebensoviel Zuspruch erhielten die Aufführungen der weiteren Werke von Ann Cleare, Anna Korsun und Karen Power. As a senior in Daisy Aldan's creative writing class back in 1959-60, she kept a bulletin board in the classroom announcing cultural events, and one such poster caught my eye: An Evening of avant-garde cinema sponsored by Cinema 16 at The Living Theatre. I thought it had something to do with "dirty" movies, so I definitely wanted to check this out! Kenneth Anger's Fireworks; Stan Brakhage's Reflections in Black; Maya Deren's Meshes of the Afternoon; Willard Maas's Geography of the Body; Marie Menken's Visual Variations on Noguchi with music by Lucia Dlugoszewski; & a few others I can't recall now. The next day in class I casually mentioned to Daisy that I'd gone to see these movies & she nearly had a heart attack. She hadn't anticipated that one of her students would actually travel the distance to go see a night of underground movies. She may have underestimated my curiosity. Upon graduation from the School of Industrial Art, Willard Mass, Marie Menken's husband, arranged with Amos Vogel, the director of Cinema 16, to hire me as an office assistant. My job basically consisted of filing documents & arranging shipments of film rentals & making interminable runs to the post office. That sort of thing. A fascinating time for a 17-year-old finding myself in the whirlwind of this avant-garde milieu; & Amos was such a dear putting up with me while I was writing poetry on the job. He definitely was this laid-back easy-going boss & so dedicated to what he was doing & to the avant-garde film movement as a whole. He was truly a saint. No one else could equal him.

For final weekend of the Carnegie International, 57th Edition the Carnegie presents "Sound Series: A Night of Deep Listening, featuring Joe McPhee, Claire Chase, and Peter Evans." Working in collaboration, John Corbett, Jim Dempsey, and Josiah McElheny have presented a gallery of artifacts anchored by sculptural portraits of four maverick musicians of the twentieth century: John Cage, Pauline Oliveros, Harry Partch, and Sun Ra, plus an homage to the “cosmic explorations” of the twenty-first century musical visionary, Joe McPhee. The performance brings together Joe McPhee, Claire Chase, and Peter Evans, three giants of contemporary of music, and a revival of composer Lucia Dlugoszewski’s "Space is a Diamond," performed for the first time in over 40 years. The event will be held at Carnegie Music Hall, Oakland, 8pm, doors open at 7:30. Earlier in the day, from 2-4pm, Josiah McElheny, John Corbett and Jim Dempsey will lead a tour of their installation "Dusty Groove II: Space is a Diamond" followed by the Tam O’Shanter Drawing Session, a workshop on hand made record cover design, inspired by Sun Ra's "Space is the Place." © Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh.
