„Nancy Holt. Circles of Light“ @gropiusbau in #berlin until July 21, 2024 “Nancy Holt was a visionary of site-specific installation and moving image. She paid attention to the inextricable human impact on the natural world by folding ecological considerations into her artistic practice. The exhibition Circles of Light presents Holt’s wide-ranging artistic output spanning 20 years, paying attention to her ecological commitment, exploration of perception and systems, and persistent interest in language and sound. She made her first artworks in 1966, creating concrete poems that explore how language structures perception. Soon thereafter, she started to use the voice and camera, encouraging an awareness of the surrounding space and a sense of place. She consistently investigated qualities of light, and from 1967 photography became foundational for her work. Its serial and circular nature fascinated Holt, who saw it as a tool that focuses visual perception. From the mid-1970s onwards, Holt developed innovative site-responsive sculptures. As can be seen in her landmark earthwork Sun Tunnels (1973-1976), she incorporated astronomy, the earth’s rotation and concepts of time and place into her expansive outdoor sculptures. My highlights of a long week in Berlin, where I was running a workshop at the Universitat der Kunst @udkberlin. I could access also the lab of chromogenic printing and film processing in colour, seeing many old and new friends, visiting Saadane Afif's studio, amazing exhibitions for the weekend galleries (at @chertluedde @galerieklemms, @koeniggalerie @galerierussiklenner), the splendid show of Nancy Holt curated by @lefeuvrelisa at the @gropiusbau where I exposed in 2006. Since then Berlin has changed a lot, the gentrification is running and many friends have witnessing the progression of it. However, I have seen community spaces in many new buildings, gardens owned by young people, free co-working spaces with children playgrounds. This cannot be undone, this should be protected, and still really inspiring to me. „Unser Leben drinnen, ist mit dem Leben draußen verwoben - im Grunde mit dem ganzen Planeten.“ Nancy Holt In Vorbereitung auf das Gallery Weekend Berlin vom 26. bis 28. April an über 69 Standorten und in Nachbereitung der Ausstellung der New Yorker Konzeptkünstlerin Diana Wege in Venedig, musste ich zur Schau von Nancy Holt. Ich habe zum ersten Mal in meinem Leben so viele Arbeiten der amerikanischen Land Art- und Konzeptkünstlerin Nancy Holt (1938-2014) gesehen. Und bin überrascht von ihrer akribischen Arbeitsweise und ihren mathematischen Vorstudien. Im Martin Gropius Bau vermitteln Videos, Fotos, Skulpturen, Zeichnungen und Fotografien ihre Hingabe zum Konzept. Die ortsspezifische Installation hat sie quasi erfunden. Und sie hat bis zu ihrem Tod die unzähligen Möglichkeiten des Sehens, Stehens, Hörens, Fühlens an einem bestimmten Ort durchgespielt. Ich bin erstaunt und begeistert, denn damit hat sie als eine der ersten Künstlerinnen eine vollkommen neue Perspektive der Betrachtung und Wahrnehmung entworfen. Es ist mir daher absolut unerklärlich, warum Nancy Holt erst 2011 zum ersten Mal in Europe eine größere Ausstellung hatte. We can see Smithson on site at Kent State University in Ohio during the construction of his "Partially Buried Woodshed" on a cold January day in 1970. Nancy Holt „Circles of Light“, im Gropius Bau in Berlin, noch zu sehen bis 21. Juli 2024. Über fünf Jahrzehnte hinweg beschäftigte sich Nancy Holt damit, wie wir unsere Umwelt wahrnehmen und unseren Platz auf der Oberfläche dieses Planeten zu verstehen versuchen. Mit Circles of Light zeigt der Gropius Bau ab März 2024 die bislang umfassendste Überblicksausstellung der Künstlerin in Deutschland. Die Ausstellung umfasst unter anderem Film, Video, Fotografie, Soundarbeiten, konkrete Poesie, Skulpturen und raumgreifende Installationen sowie Zeichnungen und Dokumentationen aus über 25 Jahren. In ihrer Praxis dachte Nancy Holt ortsspezifische Installationen und die Arbeit mit natürlichem und künstlichem Licht neu. Sie thematisierte schon früh ökologische Aspekte und bezog die Erdrotation, Astronomie sowie Zeit und Ort in ihre Skulpturen ein – und forderte uns so immer wieder dazu auf, jenseits dessen zu blicken, was wir zu wissen glauben. Holts Arbeitsweise soll in der Ausstellung im Gropius Bau durch Texte und Aufnahmen der Künstlerin besondere Präsenz verliehen werden. „Im Laufe der Jahre sind diese technischen Systeme für unser tägliches Leben unentbehrlich geworden, doch sie werden meist hinter Mauern oder unter der Erde versteckt und in den Bereich des Unbewussten verbannt. Seit dem tragischen Brand im Jahr 2019 hat sich viel getan, um dieses kulturelle Wahrzeichen von Paris wiederherzustellen und mit neuer Pracht zu erwecken. Die Restaurierung der Notre-Dame ist ein gewaltiges Unterfangen, das sorgfältige Planung und Expertise erfordert. Next week is the very last week to see the wonderful inaugural exhibition “Shadow and Light” at the @newmexicoartmuseum Vladem Contemporary in Santa Fe, New Mexico. "Shadow and Light" features three works by Nancy Holt that explore the materiality of light and shadow. Works on view by Holt include a drawing related to “Holes of Light” (1973) acquired by the museum for its collection last year, “Mirrors of Light II” (1974), and “Light and Shadow Photo-Drawings” (1978). Santa Fe is the home base of the Foundation, and Holt lived just outside the city, in Galisteo, from 1995 until her passing in 2014. Learn more about “Shadow and Light” through the link in our bio. Nancy Holt Circles of Light – Experiments with Sound, Image, Objects 1966–1986 On view until July 21 @gropiusbau Over the course of five decades, Nancy Holt explored how we perceive our environment and how we attempt to understand our place on the surface of this planet. From March 2024, the Gropius Bau presents 'Circles of Light', the artist’s most comprehensive survey exhibition in Germany to date. It includes film, video, photography, sound works, concrete poetry, sculptures and expansive installations as well as drawings and documentation from over 25 years. In her artistic practice, Nancy Holt reimagined site-specific installations and ways of working with natural and artificial light. She began focusing on ecological aspects at an early stage and incorporated the earth’s rotation, astronomy, time and space into her sculptures, constantly challenging us to look beyond what we think we know. Holt’s working process will have a particularly tangible presence in the exhibition at the Gropius Bau through texts and recordings by the artist. In the recently released "3 Body Problem" series, the protagonist risks her life to read Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" (1962), the content of which we've never grasped as much as we did during the confinement 4 years ago. The last birds are now singing at night, and we're finally rediscovering the work of women who have been active in the field of Land Art since the 1960s. Witness this recently released book, "Groundswell: Women of Land Art", published on the occasion of an exhibition curated by Leigh Arnold at the Nasher Sculpture Center, Texas, which featured 12 artists: Lita Albuquerque (1946); Alice Aycock (1946); Beverly Buchanan (1940-2015); Agnes Denes (1931); Maren Hassinger (1947); Nancy Holt (American, 1938-2014); Patricia Johanson (1940); Ana Mendieta (1948-1985); Mary Miss (1944); Jody Pinto (1942); Michelle Stuart (1933); and Meg Webster (1944). The cover features an ephemeral installation by Lita Albuquerque, a spiral of red pigments stretching 180 meters in diameter in the middle of the Mojave Desert. Equipped with pigments of powerful colors, the artist ritually and patiently draws circles, esoteric worlds of geometric shapes or colorful clouds that recreate cosmogonies with ancestral aspects. A dialogue between the earth, violated by man, and the sky, a desolate spectator who emerges from his apathy to storm his discontent with all his being when he gets the chance. Witches of the dawn, devout shamans, these women owe it to themselves to regain their place in history. To awaken our memories and shake our consciences. NANCY HOLT //// born 1938, was an American artist most known for her public sculpture, installation art, concrete poetry, and land art. Throughout her career, Holt also produced works in other media, including film and photography. Since 2018, her legacy has been cared for by Holt/Smithson Foundation. Holt is associated with earthworks or land art. Land art emerged in the 1960s, coinciding with a growing ecology movement in the United States, which asked people to become more aware of the negative impact they can have on the natural environment. Land art changed the way people thought of art; it took art out of the gallery or museum and into the natural landscape, the product of which were huge works engaging elements of the environment. Unlike much of the commercialized art during this time period, land art could not be bought or sold on the art market. Thus, it shifted the perspective of how people all over the world viewed art. Holt’s works of art often deal with issues of how people perceive time and space.
