However he did express his approval of tyranny in the VERY rarest and most desperate of circumstances. That is, when a society is so rotten to the core that the only way for a leader to fix it is to destroy it right down to its foundations and start over again. Machiavelli didn't hate Christianity, but he thought some of its principles were in direct conflict with what it takes to maintain a strong state capable of protecting its inhabitants, namely its insistence on turning the other cheek and on treating everyone in the world as you would your own brother. Machiavelli believed that the closer you are bound to other people by blood, intermarriage, common interests, culture, and geography, the greater your duty to treat them fairly, and even kindly. Conversely, the more distant the ties, the smaller the obligation. If you think your moral obligation as a leader is to act like "the good Samaritan," then find another line of work. The truth is that not everything is justified, and even Machiavelli knew that. It should be obvious that the more important the goal, the stronger the measures that can be justified. Is murder justified? Most people would say no. Is murdering a wicked tyrant justified? That’s more complicated. Same with lying. Most people would say it's wrong to lie if you don't give them a chance to qualify the answer. But if you ask them whether telling a little white lie is justified to avoid hurting someone's feelings, most would say yes. One of my areas of speciality is the Dark Triads, well two out of the three. Narcissistic and Machiavellian personality traits. Not to be confused with diagnosed personality disorders, many people can display multiple traits that fit within these two personality types but would not necessarily (or maybe they would) meet the threshold for diagnosis. Invariably, it is only those whose behaviours lead them to be in an environment where they are required to have a psychological assessment that receives a diagnosis, the rest leave a trail of destruction behind them.
