On 28 April 1489 Henry Percy, 4th Earl of Northumberland was lynched by a mob when attempting to collect tax. It was believed that the crowd’s real motive was vengeance for Northumberland’s refusal to deploy his troops at the Battle of Bosworth. Summoned by Richard III, he raised his feudal levy but watched the battle without intervening. His motives are unknown – his family were traditional Lancastrians, but he had served Edward IV faithfully. His personal relationship with Richard III fluctuated as Richard took many of the northern offices formerly held by the Percys. As a child, he had been a hostage together with Henry Tudor, under the control of William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke so bonds of friendship may have been created then between the two Henrys. Perhaps Northumberland was just sick of bloodshed and sought to protect his own men from slaughter. His tomb is in Beverly Minster. Read more on the conflicting loyalties of the Battle of Bosworth in this article by Chris Skidmore, originally published in 2015. http://bit.ly/1WJhGNG #tudors #battleofbosworth #earlofnorthumberland #henryvii #richardiii

Apparently today is #InternationalSculptureDay so let's look at sculptures, shall we? 😉 The bronze statue of Richard III was sculpted by James Butler in 1980. James made many visits to Bosworth and the battlefield and researched the armour in the Wallace Collection, ensuring it befitted the King, a formidable fighter, on horseback. Originally it was set up in Castle Gardens in Leicester where the sword was stolen several times. In 2015 the statue was moved near Leicester Cathedral not far from where the remains of the King were buried and taken to their final resting place in the Cathedral. James Butler was born in London in 1931 and lived most of his early life in Kent. He studied at St. Martin's School of Art and finally the Royal College of Art. He spent some ten years working as a professional stone carver with the Master Mason Gerald Giudici, and is responsible for many carvings that can be seen on buildings throughout London today, including the Queen Beasts in Kew Gardens. James was first elected a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1964 and is a member of the Royal West of England Academy (R.W.A.), Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors. (F.R.B.S.), and a Member of the Society of Portrait Sculptors. In 1972, James Butler was commissioned to make a portrait statue of President Jomo Kenyatta. The majestic 12 foot seated figure in the centre of Nairobi was a turning point in his career. He gave up teaching and became a full time sculptor. The demand for public commissions continued both in the U.K. and abroad. James Butler died aged 90 on 26th March 2022, the 7-year-anniversary of the reinterment of King Richard III. May you rest in peace, Sir. You did your King a great service. Today is the traditional date in 1184 BC that the Greeks enter Troy using the Trojan Horse. Perhaps it’s not the worst idea to look a gift horse in the mouth sometimes 🤣 We can’t help wondering how Shakespeare would have written this scene if it had been in Troilus & Cressida… but as always, there’s a quote for everything! “Go, go my servant, take thou Troilus’ horse, Present the fair steed to my lady Cressid.” ~T&C . . . . . . . #OTD #OTDinhistory #onthisday #onthisdate #onthisdayinhistory #trojanhorse #trojan #horse #richardiii #botanicalshakespeare #shakespeare #learnaline #lineoftheday #memorize #smartup #quotes #shakespearequotes #quoteoftheday #bardsbrainbodyboost

Yesterday also marked the founding of the Most Noble Order Of The Garter, the highest order of English knighthood, instituted on 23 April 1344 by Edward III to strengthen his claim to the French throne. Membership of the order was (and still is) limited to the Sovereign, the Prince of Wales (then Edward, the Black Prince), and no more than 24 living members, called Companions. Appointments are at the Sovereign's sole discretion. The original statutes required that each member of the Order already be a knight. The most popular legend that surrounds the order involves a "Countess of Salisbury", whose garter slipped from her leg while she was dancing at a ball in Calais. When the surrounding courtiers snickered, the king picked it up and returned it to her, exclaiming, "Honi soit qui mal y pense!" (Anglo-Norman for 'Shame on him who thinks ill of it!'), which phrase has become the Order's motto. However, the earliest written version of this story dates from the 1460s. It seems to have been conceived as a retrospective explanation for the adoption of what was then seen as an item of female underclothing as the symbol of a band of knights. In fact, the use of the garter as an emblem may have derived from straps used to fasten armour, and may have been chosen to symbolise a tight-knit "band" of knightly supporters of Edward's cause. An aspiring Garter knight had to fast and hold a vigil during the night before his investiture, which he spent praying. Before the ceremony on the next day he was bathed, dressed in simple robes and led before the Sovereign to swear his oath. After that he received his insignia: the eponymous garter, the 'Lesser George', a mantle and a collar. A banquet was then held in honour of all new garter knights. George Duke of Clarence became a Garter Knight at age 11 and Richard Duke of Gloucester at age 9. Both their so-called Garter Stall Plates are still in place in Windsor's St George's chapel (Stall N3 (4), Nr 185 & Stall S9 (9), Nr 198). #orderofthegarter #garterknight #knightofthegarter #edwardIII #theblackprince #RichardIII #georgedukeofclarence #knightlyorder #medieval #middleages #14thcentury #15thcentury #honisoitquimalypense

Happiest amongst friends. ❤️ This was the day before my first solo tour guide at Bosworth Battlefield. My friends came over and we had a "practise run" on the boat where they pretended they were 12 year olds and I would tell them about the War of the Roses. It was as chaotic and stressful as you can imagine on Maggie 😅 BUT I know that no matter what happens, I will never be given a class as challenging as a bunch of 30-something year olds pretending to be kids. And I'm equally as grateful to have such a wonderful bunch of humans for my soul tribe.❤️ . . . . . . . #earlewrites #narrowboatlife #bosworthbattlefield #richardiii #boatlife

A deceptively devious novel where the main character lets the audience in on her motivations, Lindsay Eagar’s “Made Glorious” is sure to be a hit. I love a good unreliable narrator who you love to hate and hate to love! The lengths that Rory King is willing to go through to achieve what she most wants, namely the lead role in the final play of her school career, are seemingly without limit. A classic unreliable narrator with a diabolical endgame and a tendency to break the fourth wall to remind her readers that she really is well meaning, Rory invites the reader in to “settle in and savor her it, knowing that my tricks are the kind that require measurements, planning, slow unfolding.” Making use of dramatic irony through her monologues, Rory is a character that you will at once relate to and be repelled by while you watch her brilliant and dark maneuvers to manipulate everyone and anyone in order to mold reality to fit her expectations. It’s no small feat writing a retelling of one of the Bard’s plays, however Eagar masterfully retells Richard III using the world of high school theatre at Bosworth Academy as her backdrop. Switching between first person, third person, and occasionally giving us snapshots of the past and the future, Lindsay Eagar’s “Made Glorious” utilizes prose, scripts, and a brief musical score to advance the plot. Divided into five acts and following the general structure of a Shakespearean tragedy, this was the perfect book to read in anticipation of Shakespeare’s 460th birthday. Whether you are a Shakespeare buff, a theatre fan, or just love suspenseful books, this psychological thriller will make you second guess what you thought you knew as you fly through the final scene of Act 5 to the bitter, tragic end. Happy Birthday Shakes! And happy release day @lindsayeagar Thank you so much to @candlewickpress for the advance copy of “Made Glorious.” I love a good unreliable narrator and Rory King did not disappoint! #shakespeare #madeglorious #lindsayeagar #candlewickpress #youngadultfiction #shakespeareretelling #happybirthdayshakespeare #richardiii #psychologicalthriller #suspensebooks #tragedy #unreliablenarrator

🇬🇧 The Bloody Tower at the Tower of London - London, England, United Kingdom - April 2023 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 The Bloody Tower is probably one of the more infamous locations at the Tower of London. 12 year old Edward V and his younger brother Richard were imprisoned there and possibly murdered by the order of their uncle, Richard III. It was a little surreal to think of Richard III being a real person and not just a Shakespearean character. I think this angle is indicative of how I spent most of my time in the UK. Just staring up in wonder at something built by human beings centuries ago. I was blown away every single day we were there, and even looking back at these photos, I'm still filled with awe. . . . . . . . . . . . . #toweroflondon #london #uk #londonlife #england #visitlondon #londoncity #travel #tower #bloodytower #cityoflondon #photography #unitedkingdom #history #towerhill #londonphotography #architecture #travelphotography #wanderlust #castle #greatbritain #europe #trip #vacation #richardiii #richardthethird

It's also #WorldBookDay, so here's a #RicardianReadinRecommendation for you. 'Shadows on the Sun' by Terri Beckett tells the story of what would have happened if King Richard III had won the battle of Bosworth. The first chapter is one of the most powerful bits of texts I've ever read. It transports you back into 1485, right onto the field of battle, among the bloodshed, the bodies, the smell, the noise, the sounds. The character of King Richard is spot-on. This is a Richard whose actions match the image we can glean of him through the sources: he is a just ruler, a compelling commander, a gracious king, a pious man, and a human being with flaws just like everyone else. The author manages to write one of the most authentic versions of medieval life that I've so far encountered in historical fiction, down to small details. The book goes on to explore Richard's remarriage to a spanish infanta and their subsequent life together. This part was sometimes a bit too kitschy for me, but I'm not a person for romances at all, so that's just my personal opinion. There's intrigue, too, and a plot (how could there not be, as long as Margaret Beaufort is still alive?), and lots of misunderstandings, and the ending might not be one for fans of Francis Lovell (spoiler: he doesn't die though). Even if you don't like all the rest of this book, it's totally worth it for the first chapter alone. It's a small volume, easily readable within a day. I'm so fond of this little story and the Richard in it that I re-read one chapter or another every few days. #RichardIII #KingRichardIII #FrancisLovell #BookRec #Book #Bookday #reading #readingrecommendations #terrybeckett #historicalfiction #medievalfiction #medieval

April 23, 1564/1616: William Shakespeare is born/dies in Stratford-Avon. He's 460 today! For the writers out there, find solace in knowing that even Shakespeare made very little money from penning his plays, although they were celebrated by commoners and royalty alike. His income, considerable by the day's standards (he owned multiple properties), came from acting. Today, 23 April, is generally considered to be both William Shakespeare’s birthday and the day of his death. Sedos will stage Shakespeare’s Richard III next month and we’re celebrating today by looking back at our society’s history with the playwright’s work. Sedos first staged a Shakespeare play, The Merry Wives of Windsor, in 1931. The society’s next Shakespeare production was not until 2005, our centenary year, with the start of Shakespeare in the City. For the next six years, Sedos mounted this tour annually, taking a Shakespeare play or spin-off to various offices. This renewed a link to our roots in the Stock Exchange – which sometimes hosted the public performances of these shows – and the City of London. Over the past 13 years, the Bridewell has hosted three Sedos Shakespeare plays – Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Our 2022 queer re-telling of A Midsummer Night’s Dream was awarded a National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) London Flame Award for inspirational contribution to the pursuit of excellence in theatre and enhancement of the overall theatrical experience, for the commitment to diversity and inclusion in the production. In 2012, Sedos staged As You Like It, which ran at London’s Winterflood Theatre and the Edinburgh Fringe. This was Sedos’s second Shakespeare-themed Fringe production, as in 2010 the society staged The Tragedy of the Prince of Denmark – an adaptation of Hamlet by director Andy Marchant – at Waterloo East Theatre and in Edinburgh. Four years later, Sedos put on Such Stuff As Dreams Are Made On, an immersive adventure through The Tempest, in a 15,000 sq ft disused office block in Docklands. The show won a NODA Innovation Award. Sedos has also performed several Shakespeare spin-off shows, such as West Side Story (based on Romeo and Juliet, in 1987, 1996, 2011). In 2021 we finally brought to the Bridewell the show which had been about to go up pre-pandemic, Ophelia Thinks Harder. 📸 Adrian Hau, David Ovenden, Michael Smith, Mei Parsons and Kieron Helsdon #RichardIII #SedosRichardIII #Shakespeare #ShakespeareInLondon

In 1509, #HenryVIII becomes king of #England after his father, #HenryVII, who seized the crown from #RichardIII, dies. Henry VIII was just 17 years old. This portrait is dated to around the same year and is attributed to #Netherlandish artist #MeynnartWewyck. “A far cry from the larger-than-life portraits we often see of Henry, this painting depicts the young king in the earliest years of his reign, before he got his ruthless reputation.”

#ElizabethOfYork was the real #WhitePrincess and her life was just as dramatic as what you’ve seen on TV. Born in 1466 she was the daughter of #EdwardIV and #ElizabethWoodville, the sister of the #PrincesInTheTower and the niece of #RichardIII. Her life was shaped by the #WarsOfTheRoses, the conflict fought between two branches of the Plantagenet family (the #Yorks and the #Lancasters) over who would hold the English throne. As a result of it she would see her father exiled, she and her mother and siblings would have to flee into sanctuary in #WestminsterAbbey not once but twice, she would be declared illegitimate, her little brothers ( #EdwardV and #RichardOfShrewsbury, Duke of York) would disappear at the hands of their uncle, #RichardDukeOfGloucester, and she would find herself married to the enemy; #HenryTudor, the man who defeated Richard at the #BattleOfBosworth and knocked the male members of the York family off the throne for good. All this took place before her 20th birthday and had times been different, she would have become Queen Regnant as Elizabeth I, rather than just the wife of #HenryVII. To learn all about Elizabeth’s youth and how she went from being #TheWhitePrincess to the first #TudorQueen, see my latest YouTube video, available by clicking the link in my bio and selecting my channel, or by copying and pasting https://youtu.be/VMswZDKmxhE into your browser. #HistoryCalling #RoyalHistory #RoyalWomen #Education #History

Our Broom shurbs 'Cytisus' are looking stunning in the gardens at the minute, with the Castle looking equally stunning in the background....(but then we are biased) . Did you know that centuries ago the Latin name for this shrub was Planta genista. . A lot of historians feel that this is where the name of the Plantagenet's came from as Geoffrey V of Anjou’s had a habit of wearing a sprig of broom flowers in his hat. It was Geoffrey’s son, Henry who in 1154 became Henry II, the first of the Plantagenet kings with Richard III been the last in 1485. . . @boltoncastlewensleydale . . #boltoncastle #englishcastle #medievalcastle #yorkshirecastles #wensleydale #northyorkshire #daysout #welcometoyorkshire #broom #henryII #richardiii #flowers #boltoncastlegardens

Bizarre History Monday -- The remains of Richard III, the last English king killed in battle and last king of the House of York, were discovered within the site of the former Grey Friars Priory in Leicester, England, in September 2012. Following extensive anthropological and genetic testing, the remains were reinterred at Leicester Cathedral on 26 March 2015. Richard III was killed on 22 August 1485 in the Battle of Bosworth Field, the last significant battle of the War of the Roses. His body was taken to Leicester where it was buried in a crude grave in the friary church. Following the friary's dissolution in 1538 and subsequent demolition, Richard's tomb was lost. #scottmbaker #indiewriter #horrorwriter #writersofinstagram #writerlife #writer #Writers #Writing #writingcommunity #bizarrehistorymonday #richardiii #kingrichardiii

*“In It for the Money” apresenta uma mistura de gêneros como Britpop, rock alternativo e rock psicodélico. *os singles de destaque do álbum são “Going Out”, “Richard III”, “Sun Hits the Sky”, “Cheapskate” e "Late in the Day". *“In It for the Money” alcançou o segundo lugar nas paradas de álbuns do Reino Unido. 📚Book review📚 Sisters of Richard III: The Plantagenet Daughters of York by Sarah J. Hodder • Women in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance tend to get short shrift in historical sources. The sisters of English Kings Edward IV and Richard III are perfect examples of this. We know a decent amount about the youngest sister, Margaret of York, because she married one of Europe’s wealthiest and most powerful princes, Charles, Duke of Burgundy. But her sisters, Anne and Elizabeth of York, are much less well known. • As members of the House of York, the sisters were all involved in the Wars of the Roses. Margaret was still unmarried when her brother Edward became king, and she became a marital prize. Her marriage to the Duke of Burgundy doesn’t appear to have been happy, but it gave her the influence and power to be able to help her family when the war drove them from the throne. • Anne was married at age 6 to another child, who turned out to be an enemy of her family. Elizabeth seems to have had a happier marriage, but her family was deeply affected by the ongoing wars. • If you’re not familiar with the Wars of the Roses, the author provides an excellent first chapter that gives an excellent introduction to the later Plantagenet kings and the wars between the houses of Lancaster and York. This is a complex story, and Sarah Hodder does a great job of setting the scene for the sisters’ stories. This book is a fascinating look at some lesser known people from English royal history. • I received an ARC from the publisher Pen and Sword Books and NetGalley. • • #bookish #booklover #instabooks #booksofinstagram #booknerd #bookworm #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #igreads #igbooks #bookaholic #bookobsessed #richardiii #plantagenets #margaretofyork #elizabethofyork #anneofyork
