The short walk (2.5k return) to the shelter was a breeze, and everyone enjoyed the stunning scenery. Also spotted these amazing #galls on a gum and the #leaflessbitterpea as well as a #guineaflower and #conospermum on our walk into the #manjashelter to see more rock art. Also spotted #hakeasericea and #bauera The walk back through #wattle and #thryptomene was enchanting! Overhead were #ganggangcockatoo chewing on #gumnuts and #eagles soaring. Hello from 25,000+ years ago! The Grampians National Park (Gariwerd) is the richest site for Aboriginal rock art in Victoria. The region has the largest number of rock art sites in Southern Australia and over 80% of Victoria’s rock art sites. There are approximately 200 rock art sites recorded in the region with 5 sites open to the public. Most art sites are situated under rock over hangs. The Manja shelters together have a total of 90 stencils recorded. It is believed that hand stencils were used to record a visit to a site, and to renew the ties a person had to a particular place. At this site there are also animal tracks and many human stick figures. The shelter’s name translates to mean ‘hands of young people’, perhaps reflective of the Jardwadjali children’s handprints that appear on the wall. The location of the Gulgurn Manja Shelter allowed the Jardwadjali people to live safely as they would have had a good view of the fires of other groups of people to the north of this region. Rock art played a critical role in the cultural practices of the community, mainly because it was used to pass on the artistic style from one generation to another. This form of storytelling is one of the reasons why the cultural heritage has been preserved for years. Despite their proximity to us, there is something fundamental that cuts us off from them. The time they lived in connected everything. They lived in an enormous timescale, which also contained past and future. And perhaps this is what truly separates us: not the space of time, but the sense of time. In our minute splicing of our lives into milliseconds, we live separated from everything that surrounds us. What truly blows my mind and sense of time is that some of paintings were retouched 5000-10000 years apart and yet they were part of the same unchanged culture. Last day in the Grampians, we woke up very early to run the empty tracks to the Aboriginal Art Sites, both the Manja Shelter and the Billimina Shelter. We were awe struck to see the handprints and paintings of figures and animal tracks drawn out by hands thousands of year ago. It says, we were here, this is our home.
