Er det mon klogt at løbe halvmarathon 3 dage efter en hel marathon, hvor jeg følte jeg havde fået savet benene af? Ja da 😅 Det er ALTID klogt at løbe en lille halvmarathon. Specielt på sådan en skøn sommeraften når man har selskab af verdens bedste @jensen.puk på de første to runder. Puk og jeg har løbet mange løb sammen i vinterens løb i det mest afskyelige vejr: sne, is blæst, kulde og mørke, så det var en sand fornøjelse endelig at kunne løbe sammen uden pandelampe, refleksvest, huer, vanter og pigsko og bare nyde en dejlig tidlig sommeraften, hvor @majkendanmark havde inviteret til et skønt løb i smukke omgivelser og med prima forplejning. Who’s been in this situation? You start your run out feeling great! ​ then on your timer you past 90 minute to 2 hour mark, then suddenly “the shift happens” ​ you notice the legs aren’t feeling so great and your pace is getting slower and slower, and you start feeling like you are hitting struggle town. ​ This is a sign your nutrition does not fit the timing on your long runs. ​ A big mistake we can make as runners is not getting in enough fuel for what we are asking our bodies to do. ​ How we fuel our bodies is especially important if you love the long runs and love hitting PBs in an event like a half marathon, marathon or ultra. ​ We need to train our body to burn both fats and carbohydrates to produce enough energy to maintain our running pace. ​ Fat is a constant fuel source for the muscles’ during low- to moderate-intensity exercise (aerobic), whereas carbohydrates are the muscles’ primary fuel for moderately high- to high-intensity exercise (just below and above our lactate threshold). ​ Once you hit around 90 minutes at continuous moderate to higher intensity running your glycogen stores (how your body stores the carbs) becomes depleted leading to fatigue or as we know it ​ ‘bonking’ and ‘hitting the wall’. ​ ​ When we are running endurance events we are generally running at an effort level in between our aerobic and lactate thresholds where our bodies are using both fats and carbs for energy if we are well trained runners. ​ When we do our long runs we expend more energy over time, and if we don’t get in enough fuel or train our body to use both and tolerate carbs while running, it can lead to a gut distress disaster and performance disaster. ​ This is why I created a guide for those who want to dial in their fuelling during their long run to maintain your running pace without the “bonk” ​ If you want to learn the proper way to fuel for your long runs than comment “fuel me up” below and I’ll send it through. #womenwhorun #marathontraining #plantbasedrunner

There are many products on the market promising better recovery. However, inexpensive, widely available foods are perhaps even a better choice. Today, let's take a look at good old milk. ❓ What is essential for #recovery? First and foremost, it's carbohydrates and protein. Cow's milk contains per 250ml approx. 8g of high-quality protein, 12g of carbohydrates and 4g of fat. The protein in milk contains a high ratio of essential amino acids, which are important for muscle building and repair. 👉 Milk has additional benefits: It contains electrolytes sodium, magnesium, potassium, water which helps rehydrate the body. Vitamins A and D, calcium and magnesium support bones. It is readily available and inexpensive. #Kefir milk may be a better choice because it contains live cultures that are beneficial for gut health. 🥛 What if you don't consume cow's milk? Of the plant-based alternatives, soy milk seems to be the best because it has the highest protein content of the plant-based alternatives. At 250ml it contains approx. 8g of protein, 8g of carbohydrates and 5g of fat. The protein contained in soya milk has a different amino acid composition, but this does not appear to be limiting in the context of a complete diet. Compared to cow's milk it has less calcium, magnesium, no vitamin A or D, but contains more iron. That's why I recommend plant milks that are fortified with calcium, vitamin A and D. 🥛 For optimal recovery shortly after physical activity, an ideal carb to protein ratio of 3:1. Therefore, flavoured, sugar-sweetened milk (e.g. cocoa milk) seems to be a better choice. You can also use unflavored milk and add sugar, honey, agave... Or make a smoothie with fruit for an extra boost of antioxidants to boost recovery. 💡Summary: Cow's milk is a cheap and accessible and food that, with its composition, is ideal for post-workout recovery. Had such fun supporting @emmakirkyo on her #4444 challenge yesterday even if my right hip is 2% grumpy about it 😂 What she’s done in the last month is nothing short of awe inspiring. And 6 Boston Marathons in the bank! It remains my preferred marathon so far by the very professional organization, the crowd cheering 📣 so hard, the course and the legendary final arrival. I trained for 3h04 and held the pace to mile 20 (32km) and then couldn’t… i feel i missed 4 weeks of speed training and didn’t fully recover from LOST 118 six weeks ago. Thanks to my coach @remo_spagnol and as usual my best ally and supporter @estelle_boutard_guillot You will appreciate my beautiful bathrobe to go to the launching pad! Felt like Rocky Balboa and didn’t get cold. Congratulations to Richard for a strong finish. Das war also der #haspamarathonhamburg 2024. Sehr viel Sonnenschein, zum Schluss dann etwas bedeckten. Z2 (mid). Look who’s a little slower today! 😂 I ran my hill route for the first time in a looong time, I followed coach’s instruction from previous builds, and I ran slow enough to stay in Z2, even on the ups. I was able to do that and my pace didn’t slow terribly from where it’s been. I’m kinda pumped about it! I feel like it means that my heart and lungs are getting back into it and, with time, previous levels of fitness will return. Maybe better levels… 👀 🤞 I decided to go with 3 weight sessions this week. I was going to get one in today, but…we went to pick up our little puppy. Meet Louie!! That’s a solid reason to skip in my books. My trainer is setting up a new gym routine for me, so that will get me back into a progressive plan. Saturday morning 16 miles by 10 AM! Road + dirt/stone path + grasslands + trails! Found a set of hiking/biking trails in the woods by my house I didn’t even know existed! I may have gotten a little lost, going around in loops makes me lose my sense of direction, but I found my way back and saw lots of wildlife…whitetail deer, squirrels, chickmunks, bunnies, and a turkey vulture! I also made it back with no blisters! Yay wool socks are a game changer! I also stopped wearing my sesamoiditis insert which is what caused the blister in the first place! I also popped it, covered it with a bandaid then KT tape and it really hasn’t hurt anymore…yay! But I hurt your not supposed to pop it?! Excited to race around Seneca Lake tomorrow!!! I feel like this medal is worth so much more than any other medal I’ve earned. The pain in my back was so intense, but the determination and my heart was so strong. I finished a 10k in 55 minutes and 9 seconds 2nd in my age group 50-59 years old. Runstreak day 192 is complete. ✅ 🏅👏🥳 This race beat my previous time 4 years ago by 45 seconds. Well here we are again 2nd run this week, i am loving this downtime though but unfortunately i came down with a cold and woke up this morning feeling like death warmed up so im hoping i can shift this over the next few days and will head to parkrun again on Saturday. This morning me and @jackie_runs_on_plantpower with @peter.steele.9237244 headed to @tawdvalleyparkrun to run and have a catch up with the one and only @run_bradders_run honestly this guy is so genuine and such a good friend. Everyone did amazing at parkrun considering how hard the route is haha. Så fik jeg hentet startnummer og taske i messehallen. Bagefter gik vi lidt rundt i byen. Completed the @blueridgemarathon for the 3rd time, and this time, I received the second place trophy for my age group! The race was a beautiful, mountainous course with over 7,430 feet of elevation change. Although I didn't necessarily achieve my goal time, I was still happy with how I finished. My second Parkrun this year was done this morning in a very wet car park at Berkeley Green and the Power Station. I finished on 36 minutes exactly after splashing through many puddles. 💦 As seen, I ended up soaked through. If I wasn’t being picked up then I would definitely have stayed in bed. But I’m glad I went in the end. I haven’t been focused on shorter faster runs of late, as I’ve been focused on longer goals with my two half marathons. A WEEK OF RUNNING . There wasn’t a lot of running this week as it was my mum’s 70th, there was a trip to Leicester and then playing catch up from being away for 3 days. . It hasn’t been the best prep for the Balmoral 15 mile trail run tomorrow 🫣 but I’m okay with where I am with my running. . I took another week off social media and I’ve realised just how distracted I get on here with miscellaneous time spent scrolling in the evenings as a way to switch off! . It’s great to come back on at the weekend and see what everyone has been up to ❤️ . Here are a few snaps from my week. . - 7.5 mile run on Monday morning - Signs of Spring with white sandals and trousers - Crossing the Forth Road Bridge - My first time on a Peloton bike - A night in Newcastle on route to Leicester . Long run Friday! First hour done with the @runningcircles_uk, with a visit to the infamous Wordsley Waterfall. Z2 (max end), neighbourhood run. Look who’s a little faster!! For today anyway. 3 out of my 7kms were under 6 mins — woohoo!! I still have so much more building and conditioning to do, but I’ll take my wins where I can get ‘em. And really, my first run back was only a month ago and I’ve already shaved 1:20/km off. Consistency really pays off!! Even if it doesn’t always feel like it *cough*Sunday*cough* I did a full body KB workout to finish out the day.
