Unhatched Egg of the Giant Elephant Bird, Aepyornis maximus The now-extinct Aepyornis maximus is illustrative of the unique flora and fauna that developed on the island of Madagascar after it split from the Indian subcontinent 88 million years ago. It was a truly enormous creature, measuring over 3 metres in height. However, as a flightless and wingless herbivore, it’s closed relative today is the kiwi bird. In 1298, Marco Polo recorded seeing near Madagascar a bird of prey so big that it could carry an elephant in its talons. The name ‘elephant bird’ may derive from this and other stories. What's your favorite bird?! I get asked this question every day, and I can never name a favorite! To me, it's like asking who your favorite kid is. It's impossible to have a favorite when you love them all so much! I do have a favorite painted bird, however. As an artist, once in a while, you stand back and realize that something you created turned out to be better than expected. It's an odd sensation to look at something and see more beauty in it than when you created it. To me, there's something so poetic in the blending of this female red-winged blackbird featured in my original painting, "Red-Winged Blackbirds In A Marsh." The colors seem to blend and emerge in a way that makes this bird stand out. At art shows, her tummy looks so fluffy that I catch people trying to pet the canvas! 😆 🫣 Most people don't know what type of bird she is and generally mistake her for a sparrow. I understand the confusion because female red-winged blackbirds don't look anything like the males. They're the color of marsh grass. Making it easier for them to hide from predators and raise their young. I've found red-winged blackbirds to be the most controversial birds at art shows. People tend to have a strong reaction towards them. They either love them or hate them. Some think of them as pests and hate that they dive bomb people in their territory. Personally, I admire their courage and dedication to their family units. These birds will attack anything and everything in defense of their family. I also love waking up to their trill in the spring. Drawing makes me a better listener. My hands just need something to do. In the mornings, I like to prepare my drawings for paint while sipping coffee and sharing a quiet morning with my husband.
