I figured it was about time for a room post, with so many changes over the last few days and really weeks. The components have changed in some really substantive ways both with my well documented turntable purchase as well as the surprise addition of some new-to-me speakers courtesy of @atadtwitchy . If you think my aesthetic is mid century, you haven’t seen anything until you’ve seen his audio setup and home decor. Scroll down for the component rundown. What else has changed? Well, I decided that the acoustics of the room should outweigh the fact that once in a while I have more than a couple guests here listening at the same time. So, my Milo Baughman esque couch is gone, my vinyl shelving is no longer bearing the weight of 100+ pounds of McIntosh gear and I’ve slid the majority of that shelving against a different wall in a more vertical format. And then of course I got an audio rack. Did I accomplish what I wanted in terms of improving the acoustics? Absolutely. Now, I can’t isolate the impact of just the speakers but the total package is a huge improvement. I’ll now be fussing with speaker placement for a bit but I threw Grant Green’s Matador on for the inaugural spin, and was blown away. I also fell in love with the light boxes made by @petru.designs after seeing them featured in so many fabulous listening rooms so i had to order one and can’t wait for it to arrive. HOME McINTOSH SYSTEM - Currently, I'm at home playing some of my audio equipment. This particular set-up isn't a new one. I put it together in my music room about 4 years ago. The system sits in a corner, with speakers and a reel-to-reel tape machine positioned away from the set-up itself. --- I use this system a good bit. Not only can I play CDs, tuner, vinyl and reel-to-reel, but I can also create 24 bit CD recordings (using the Masterlink), as well as record on reel-to-reel tape. --- The speakers aren't pictured, but I'm using a pair of XR-7s. JUST IN - Make way, there's more McINTOSH equipment coming in! This lot of gear consists of a pair of ML-2C speakers. You can't really tell by these photos, but these ML-2Cs are in excellent condition with all of the drivers refoamed. --- There's also another set of speakers, a pair of XR-7s. ROAD TRIP - Last night, after I closed the store, I went to Broadview Heights, in order to buy a collection of McINTOSH equipment. Though these photos aren't the best (the lighting in the house was sort of dark), all of these pieces were owned by a gentleman who is now 88 years old! --- The house that I went to was very interesting. It was an old farmhouse from the late 1800s. The (long) driveway was all red bricks. An amazing place. --- The elderly gentleman told me that, many years ago, he worked at Audio Craft. His job was installing McINTOSH audio gear in hand-built cabinets, usually mounted in the walls of very, very expensive homes. He showed me a few photo albums of some of his past work, as well as actual audio magazines where his work, through the years, was featured. He was proud of his past accomplishments, and rightfully so. Fascinating, indeed. --- I asked the gentleman how long all of these McINTOSH pieces have been sitting. His answer was, "...well, they've all been sitting upstairs for about 25 years". So... no doubt, they'll all need serviced. Oh... all of these pieces have the original manuals. --- It was sort of funny... when I went to get in my Flex and leave, he said, "are you interested in a McINTOSH CD player? I said, "yes". Then he said, "Ok, I have one around here somewhere. I'll have to find it 🤭. --- It was a wonderful evening. Nothing like tearing apart perfectly good speakers and modifying them. 🤪😜 Armed with a very limited set of instructions and a quest for better sound, I internally braced the cabinets along with lining them in NoRez. Then I built a whole new crossover with parts from @grresearch . The results are significant and AMAZING! The bass hits, the vocals are three feet closer, and you can hear separation in every instrument. So glad I put in the three days of work to finish this. Switched out the #McintoshMC2105 for the #DynacoST70 #tubeamp tonight. Not sure the ST-70 is the best match for the KLH Model Fives. Sounds a bit thin and under-powered. Our man in Copenhagen? #DexterGordon spent most of the ‘60s in Europe. Many mistakenly think he based himself in Paris, but he actually spent most of his time in Denmark. Lucky Danes! A week ago the #McIntoshC28 came back from the tech after several attempts to repair channel drop outs. Turns out the problem was with the output RCA terminals, which have now been replaced. Problem licked! Found a nice copy of the #HMVRecordShop #ProjectReVinyl pressing of #RyoFukui’s #ALetterFromSlowboat. Slowboat is the jazz bar Ryo and his wife opened in Sapporo in the mid ‘90s, and this was his final album recorded in January, 2015 with #TakumiAwaya on bass and #ItetsuTakemura on drums. As always, Fukui’s piano is sublime.
