Having a baby is a significant change. While some people have a challenging time returning to work, others are really happy to return. They need that structure and stimulation of talking to other adults, and enjoying what they do for a living. Whatver your scenario is, however you feel about it, it's OKAY! People’s experiences are different. And it’s especially challenging if a perinatal mental health condition was present. That is what I’m discussing in episode 338 in a Behind the Sessions episode of Mom & Mind™ podcast. Listen now on Apple Podcasts or find us on Spotify and momandmind.com. Many factors influence the transition to parenthood, and most of those things are unexpected and unpredictable. No one “signs up for” a perinatal mental health condition, but it can seem to come out of nowhere and leave you blindsided–in addition to the normal adjustments that come with the addition of a new baby to the family. These PNMH conditions can impact every area of life significantly, including the return to work. Join me for a closer look at navigating this tricky transition. I share more on episode 338 where I discuss this topic in more detail. Find Mom & Mind™on Apple Podcasts or find us on Spotify and momandmind.com. In the midst of labor, everything might seem "normal" as you navigate the experience. Dr. Dekker @ebbirth shares her own realization—that while her labor appeared uneventful in the moment, a deeper understanding emerged later. She had a healthy baby and the vaginal birth she desired, yet it wasn't until about a year later that she grasped the impact of certain aspects, like being separated from her baby for three hours post-birth, which can be traumatic for both mother and child. This realization led her to compile a list of her experiences and delve into research on proper protocols. Dr. Dekker firmly believes that "Information is power." Without awareness of what one doesn't know, there's a risk of encountering unforeseen challenges. Join us in episode 337 of the Mom & Mind™ podcast to explore Dr. Dekker's journey and insights. Having information and being empowered to make decisions are ways to protect mental health. Nothing is more disempowering than finding out later that you had choices of which you were unaware at the height of a mental health struggle. All of these concepts apply perfectly to birthing situations. Healing is a journey, one that can be incredibly painful and incredibly rewarding. @Alanis shares parts of her journey with us, and eloquently shares how some of the darkest times forged her depth of healing. She feels deeply as a highly sensitive person, traits that both Wendy @wendyndvs of @postpartumsupportinternational and I share with her. That heart and depth of understanding that she has, and what we have, is at the center of the work that PSI does. Tha is the driving force behind the work that we do today to support women through their own perinatal mental health journey. Embracing both the empowered feminine and the empowered masculine, as Alanis says, to step in, speak up and hold space for those in pregnancy and postpartum. This life-altering experience with tremendous ripple effects deserves more of the attention than it is currently receiving. We are grateful that Alanis joined us and to witness her share her story. This is such an important observation and truth from Alanis. These societal pressures have a real impact. So much of that becomes internalized and we then start to even put that pressure on ourselves. It’s even harder when you become a mother because you have a new level of responsibility, are learning a lot of new things, and have very real needs for healing, community, partnership, and support. @Alanis Morissette shares how these dynamics impacted her. Celebrity and Fame do not protect people from this, it may actually be another layer of complexity. When she became a mom, the pressures of it all contributed to the difficulties she experienced Please join this conversation in collaboration with @PostpartumSupportInternational to learn more about her postpartum journey and listen to how eloquently she speaks about the transformation we undergo as mothers in episode 336 of Mom & Mind™ podcast. WAIT, Before you come for me, YES, sleep is hard to get in the early days and weeks. You are up often with baby. AND there are ways to negotiate with your partner, family, or friends to support you in getting more sleep. Even if you prioritize your sleep 4 out of the 7 days a week, instead of staying up later after the baby is having that first stretch of sleep at night. That makes a difference. Time and time again I hear the women I work with and those who share their stories on this podcast, that sleep was an integral part of their healing journey. If you are feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, stressed and worried as a new mom, I highly encourage you to get more sleep and people ideally should be helping you to get more sleep. To learn more about the techniques and skills I teach the women I work with to get more sleep, please visit www.wellmindperinatal.com/courses #momandmind #thepowerofsleep #maternalmentalhealth #perinatalmentalhealth #overhwelmedmom #newmom #newmommy #mommyhood

Sleep is hands down one of the number factors that makes all moms’ symptoms better once they are able to increase the number uninterrupted hours they can sleep. Creating a support system that can help offset some of the hours helps. For example, if a partner or the other parent can alternate waking up with baby during the night. Eliminating or reducing media consumption and social media can be huge game changers as well. Replaceing that with nature walks, being outside, getting time to yourself or for having intentional time to engage with baby are mindfulness activities that are very supportive. Dr. Ellen did consult with her pediatrician about the feeding issues, and they suggested that she supplement with formula. However, she also shares the memory of having many questions for her doctor. In retrospect, she wonders why they never checked in on her based on the questions she was asking. This is a very common scenario. Although we are starting to see things change in pediatrician’s offices, there is still alot of work to do. There needs to be more and earlier check ins for mom and her mental health wellbeing. Oftentimes, this shame keeps people from asking for the help they need and deserve. Some of the questions that start occupying their minds are: “If I share this, how am I going to be perceived?” “How are people going to handle that information?” “How are they truly going to help? What are they going to be able to do to support me?” There is so much stigma and misinformation out there about postpartum anxiety and postpartum OCD, it is no wonder many choose to not share their struggles or ask for help. This is why Mom & Mind™ podcast exists today. To share these stories and information and start breaking this stigma, to get moms the help they need as early as possible. Through the sharing of our stories, we educate ourselves and others about perinatal mental health challenges, and we normalize the fact that we should not feel shame for needing professional help and support. Any comments that start with “you should just…” or “why don’t you…” or “why haven’t you….” usually are not supportive, even when it is meant with good intentions. These types of comments create so much pain. At a time when people are going through such struggle to become pregnant, they do not need this added layer of pain. Far too often people are dismissed by others around them. Choosing to go on this type of journey, does not mean you are asking for suffering and just suck it up. This is an incorrect sentiment. I like to share my story as a way to educate. I wish people talked about things more. For example, whee we n my son was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia, they never said that we parents probably also have similar traits. I’m an OT and was never taught about what neurodivergence looks like beyond the stereotype. #Repost @momandmind ・・・ What happens many times is that when kids get diagnosed, the parent starts recognizing those same traits in themselves. Many times in these types of examples, people’s feelings get minimized. A common phrase used is “you should be happy you have a healthy child”. I was completely unprepared for how the grief of losing my mom would hit me, full force, when I had my son in 2020. She’d passed 14 years prior and I was used to missing her, but I had no idea how much it would impact my postpartum experience. The @momandmind podcast helped me tremendously that first year and many times since. I am so grateful I had the chance to visit with Dr. Kat and share my experience. My hope is that others find it validating and helpful! One thing I’ve learned since having my son is that raising him without my mom (both of my parents are deceased and badly missed); raising him without a village, and while dealing with numerous physical and mental health challenges…it can take a toll. However…. I’ve learned moms can feel joy and grieve at the same time. A rough day or week doesn’t undo our progress. We can miss what was while enjoying the present. We can carry on the things we loved the most about our moms who’ve passed on. We can ask for help if we need it without feeling shame. **Instagram is for education; not therapy. * * I’d love to help you create a plan for your mental health - even if you never need it - as part of your birth and postpartum preferences. Alexa Ericson @mama.freebirth experience a beautiful second birth because she followed her own instincts, desires and her body’s cues. Her home birth was completely void of medical professionals, and this may not be the answer for everyone. She didn’t have many worries, or questions she felt she needed answered by a professional, so this worked for her. Her message however, applies to everyone. Listen to what your body is telling you and voice your desires. Ask for what the options are and the side effects are, if they are not being offered to you. There is more to the story than postpartum depression. There are many complexities to the ways we talk to ourselves. I see perinatal folks give in frequently to thoughts of self-judgment and even self-hatred, which is not at all a healthy scenario for the transition to parenthood. It’s a time when there are many new things to learn and adjustments to make as we become parents. In today’s session, we answer the important question: “Why are we so hard on ourselves?” Find us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and momandmind.com or LINK IN BIO. #sefltalk #negativeselftalk #childhoodtrauma #childhoodprogramming #societalconditioning #momandmind #maternalmentalhealth #perinatalmentalhealth #overhwelmed #newmom #newmommy #mommyhood

Alexa Ericson @mama.freebirth shares the many times during her birth and postpartum where she was told to do something she didn’t really want to do. She later learned those were all things she could have said no to. And like so many new mothers, she just did not know what her options were. You would think we were talking about the medical team at the hospital. But we’re not. Alexa hired two midwives and a doula, and she was still met with resistance and lack of the type of support she was expecting. I cannot say it enough. Sleep is SO important, especially as a new parent. And while loss of sleep does not necessarily mean that you will develop PPP, for those who have risk factors for PPP, loss of sleep is a major contributor and concern. Rowena shares with us what it was like for her to start going into a state of paranoia and the feeling of dissociation, after a night of absolutely no sleep.
