Super tiny 𝘔𝘺𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘢 𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘰𝘧𝘭𝘢𝘷𝘢, swipe for the scale shots! This was the last stack I managed to capture before my battery died! Hence the subpar scale shots taken on my phone. As the name suggest these mushrooms usually assume more of a pink-yellow tone (𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘦𝘰𝘧𝘭𝘢𝘷𝘢) as they age, but if you catch them at this stage of development they will often be various hues of super bright baby pink. Discovered in 1964 and believed to be native to New Zealand, this fungi is also bio-luminescent. This tiny Mycena, Mycena roseoflava is only 5-10 mm high and can be found on decaying logs. It is rare in Australia where it is only found only in southern Victoria and Tasmania.

PINKIE PARASOLS? . I was so excited yesterday, to come across my very first specimen of Mycena roseoflava... TWICE! Both quite deep in the forest off track. Both quite by chance. Lucky me. . What I love about this pair, is that they appear to be stuck to one another. Reaching out, and not daring to let go. Sweet. . Trying to be oh so funny and clever, I'm going to refer to them as Pinkie Parasols. Forgive me if that's already a thing (or should not be a thing). . The specimens I found were really quite tiny. These stood about 4mm tall. I adore the pink tones of the caps. I'm told by the bioluminescence boffin @ryan_shanz that they glow in the dark. I did record the geo location on @gaiagps, but I'm not sure if I fancy trying to find them at night time. . My first time spotting "Mycena Roseoflava". This small pretty species is usually found on small branches or decaying wet wood. The cap is pale pink (ca. 5-8mm diam), the gills are whitish or pale pink and the small stipe (ca. 3mm long, 1-2mm wide) is pink or yellow. According to some articles Mycena roseoflava were recently found glowing at night as well.

Bioluminescent Mycena roseoflava on Stewart Island April 14th 2021 See on my website for more and higher resolution photos of these fascinating fungi! 🍄 This New Zealand native species of Mycena was observed to be bioluminescent by Anna Chinn in 2021 at the Fungal Foray in Stewart Island, New Zealand. Since it had been first described as a species about 60 years ago, it had not been known to be bioluminescent until now. It is a discovery that Jerry Cooper - a mycologist at Manaaki Whenua / Landcare Research @manaaki_whenua - found quite exciting. Since these Mycena glow significantly brighter than the Armillaria in the previous post, it is however very likely that Maori have observed their glow in the past. Unlike some Mycena species, only the stem of Mycena roseoflava is bioluminescent, not the whole fruiting body. Each mushroom is only about 1-2cm tall. And these are also quite eye-catching during the day, as they have pale pink or yellow colours - which in my excitement didn't get around to taking photos of that night. To our knowledge, Mycena roseoflava bioluminescence has never been photographed before. Many thanks to Anna Chinn for leading a number of exciting night walks to explore fungal bioluminescence!
