This here is a reperepe aka Elephantfish, one of the more peculiar looking inshore fish species we have in Aotearoa. Fairly common in the harbour here in Wellington, you’ll often come across their alien like egg cases when scallop diving or washed ashore after gnarly storms. Some people and other artists even find my methodology strange. The idea that things might just appear to me on the canvas whilst I'm painting them doesn't make sense to some, but it's right for me. Having first performed with @nzballet 20 years ago, Paul Mathews @p.mathews is returning to #RNZB as a Guest Character Artist for the Company's national tour of SWAN LAKE. For the last four national tours of this show, the role of Wolfgang was portrayed by the late Sir Jon Trimmer. Paul says “Sir Jon is an icon of the Royal New Zealand Ballet and was an inspiration for me. He was always there for the over thirty years I was a student then professional ballet dancer in NZ. There is definitely an artistic void without Sir Jon, that not just I, but all of New Zealand feels. I will do my best to honour him and also Russell Kerr’s vision for the role and I am lucky to be able to work with @turidrevfeim who is staging the work and knew both Jonty and Russell very well and will have many gems to incorporate.” Paul will be performing the role in Wellington, Auckland, Napier and Christchurch. Climacteric women: their untold stories hidden in the shadows, whispers of their dreams carried away by the wind. Pulsating carnal desires left unacknowledged; wisdom betrayed by the fallibility of memory. Faces that once gazed in the mirror now reflect strangers. Bodies heavy, wet, burned, and melted. Silenced pains, finite cycles. In this series of paintings, the body is represented by a house. 'Climacteric Woman' celebrates an unspoken chapter in a woman's life, a weight often carried quietly. It invites you to amplify your voice, resignify your dreams, and reclaim the beauty you were told was lost. *Note: The climacteric encompasses the period that includes perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause. Symptoms associated with climacteric include hot flushes, night sweats, fatigue, headache, dizziness, numbness, sore limbs, decreased attention, anxiousness, nervousness, insomnia, mood swings, sorrow, depression, etc. 🌿 This series is part of my exhibition 'Wildeye: A Female Gaze Into Nature', which will be at the @franklinartscentre until 25/05. What was that?! *looks back at the working week* 🤯 We are just popping onto your radar to (re)introduce you to the phenomenal speakers we have lined up for our Creative Contracts workshop next Wednesday evening: ✨ @katekeddell is a former lawyer 📜 who now facilitates, mediates, and directs lots of important people to do their mahi in an effective, efficient, and ethical way 👏🏽 ✨ @arohanovak is a local creative who has been working and creating all over Ōtepoti since she first graduated from the Dunedin School of Art in 2007 🎨 Aroha also holds an MFA from Dunedin School of Art, majoring in Installation art and has exhibited nationally throughout New Zealand at public institutions and project spaces. Her work is often research based, drawing out indigenous and local histories that have been forgotten or suppressed. She frequently works outside of traditional gallery spaces collaborating with other artists, experts and communities to expand knowledge systems. Her art practise encompasses mural painting, installation, sculpture, photography, design, writing and curating 🎨🛠📸 🖌✏ The fourth in our Creative Capability workshop series for 2024, Creative Contracts looks to provide: ✨ top tips on contracting ✨ what you can look out for, and ✨ what you can feel confident in negotiating. New art has arrived by Jason Hicks! Oil on recycled timbers. Jason Hicks’ inspiration for his work comes from his love of the New Zealand landscape, wildlife, birdlife and his passion for the history of our land. Jason’s work is vastly rich in texture, yet harmonious, comprising layers of loose under-drawing, more formally worked areas of over-painting. He incorporates text, Maori iconography and robust colour to his visual inquiry.
