An eagle’s egg tumbled from its mountainside nest during an earthquake, landing amidst a flock of chickens. The chickens saw this lone large egg and instinctively knew they must protect and care for it, so an old hen volunteered to nurture it. Soon after, the egg hatched, and a beautiful eagle was born. But the eagle was raised to be a chicken. It didn’t take long for the eagle to believe he was nothing more than a chicken. He pecked at the ground, ran for cover, and clucked with the rest, yet each action felt foreign, a performance more than instinct. Sometimes, gazing upwards, a strange memory would flicker – a fall, wind beneath wings, but he would quickly shake it off. Deep down in his heart, there was a feeling that maybe there was more to this life. He had imprinted all of the chicken’s behaviors. The giant chicken had learned to fear, think, eat, cluck, scavenge, burrow, and live like a chicken. That eagle gave up on his inner dream, feeling, and belief that he might not be a chicken and maybe he was an Eagle. One day, while playing a game on the farm with some of his chicken friends, the giant chicken looked to the skies and noticed mighty eagles soaring high above. “Wow, look at those beautiful birds,” the giant chicken cried, “I wish I could soar like those birds.” His best friend roared with laughter, “You cannot soar with those birds. You are a chicken, and we do not soar.” He was the subject of laughter, jokes, and criticism, so he gave up and decided to suppress that feeling and continue living his life as a giant chicken. His chicken family wasn’t malicious, and they loved their giant chicken; a small-chicken mentality limited them. A twinge of dissatisfaction and resentment remained throughout his life. What’s the moral of the story? If you listen to the chickens around you, you’ll live and die like them—a chicken. The eagle within you dies only when you decide to live as a chicken. Before @liyanazai and I had kids, I told her that the only thing I would hope and want my kids to have is resilience. Failing and falling down but getting up again. Shared with friends in recent weeks abt a convention regarding suicide my wife had attended few years ago whereby, - suicide was the leading cause of death for those aged 10-29 years old. (children as young as 10 years old) - males accounted for 68.3% of all suicides - 7.8% of adult population in Spore (1 in every 13) had thought abt suicide. The recent case of my eldest child #shakeellaythshahril. Quite a number of people (mostly malays) were telling me to back down from going against the school. And when I approached other malay parents of the school, they said to leave them out of it. But if there is something people dont know abt me, I got to where I am today, being very different from many others. Being in the same top class from Pri 2 till Pri 6 (where they banded the top 40 students every year, I was one of the 6 malay and 2 indian kids every year). I picked up mandarin, watching Channel 8 and TVB just to know what others spoke. But I rmbr how a number malay kids from other classes saw me as the malay EM1 kid/football captain that they didn’t really like. Moving on to ACS Barker, I went from a neighbourhood pri sch in cck to a school where I was surrounded by rich kids (chauffeured to home econs/d&t classes at Thomson Sec or cabbing home after football trainings or having daily pocket money more than what I got in a month) When others could afford to fail and go overseas for studies or have connections, I know I couldn’t. Football, a big thing for me, was seen as 2nd class or 3rd class as it isnt a traditional sport like rugby or swimming in a boys’ school. While some were swayed by moving to other sports, I never wavered. I didn’t expect to get enough points to get into JC after focusing on club football during my O levels year. 5 B3s and 1 C5. Last Saturday I participated in my first powerlifting competition. Going into this I had several basic goals: 1. Don’t faint or throw up. 2. Don’t jump commands from the Refs. 3. Get my opening lifts on the Board. Those that know me know I’m not basic, so why would my goals stop there….. I wanted to walk away from the competition with white lights, as many as I could get. I wanted to break a state record in the squat category for my age and weight class. I came close- so close. I came away with successfully completing 7 out of 9 lifts ⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️😊. As to breaking the state record, I needed to squat 70Kgs (154 lbs) and I did!!! But, unfortunately I did not get my 3 white lights for that lift. I got 2 red lights and 1 white light and was called on a technicality. A total rookie mistake on my part and one I will never make again. My knee wraps were touching my socks. I should not have taken the chance and wore my deadlift socks. I should have wore short socks but in all honesty socks were the last thing on my mind that day. But that’s ok overall I am proud of my performance on the platform and for those of you who have asked me if I’m done yet. No, I’m not. I will continue to get stronger and better everyday. I will go to Nationals in June and I will be there to compete. I won’t be there as a placeholder hoping for the best. In all the things I have ever tried and I know it’s always something lol. This sport has given me more confidence in myself and my body than any other activity I have done.
