Plateaus are going to happen at some point. You will not progress in all three lifts simultaneously forever. And, if you’re not adding weight every week, or you haven’t for a month or two, or you have an “off day,” that doesn’t mean you’re in a plateau. The expectation that all three of your lifts will trend upward for months and years to come, without any deviation, is a fantasy world- specifically if you’re a raw, natural lifter. Plateaus happen, and we can’t always control (or know what are) the factors that cause them.  If you were always adding weight to the bar without any challenge, what does that give you? How would you know to address your shortcomings, improve your programming, unlock the thing to make you better? 
 We have our greatest breakthroughs and lessons as Powerlifters during the hard times because they force us to look inward & explore how to continue expounding. 
 Past the newbie stage, once you get stronger, it gets harder. The way I like to reframe this is that the increased effort and difficulty enhance the meaning of your lifts. Sure, it’s fun to add weight to the bar every session, but when that’s your expectation- you don’t build as much satisfaction in your accomplishments. It just happens, and it’s cool, but there’s not as much beneath the surface. Use these phases as an education period. Stalls provide an opportunity- to search for answers and discover what you need to keep growing. It’s a valuable place to be if you view it that way. And once you break through it, a) it’ll mean even more to you, and you’ll find relief and comfort in that win, and b) you’ll know more about yourself in future training phases, better equipped to handle whatever may arise. How you respond to stagnation in your training is what counts. It can either be your path to unlocking your greatest potential yet- or the thing that makes you quit. Adjust your expectations, and choose your next steps forward. 🖤Coach Nat

How I’m currently feeling after 3 long days at BUCS 😴 I know I say this about every comp I do, but Friday was such a fun day, just want to do it all over again 😆 This was possibly the most relaxed I’ve felt while competing, just enjoying the day whatever happened, and it’s always a pleasure to support so many strong friends 🫶 Feeling a bit emotional I’ll be honest, now my final BUCS (representing Bath at least) is over and I’m coming to the end of my uni powerlifting experience with @teamchalk this week 😢🥺

Body was quite unco today. But I still managed to double 155kg, which I've never managed before. Second time round was a no go, only getting a single. Followed up with 2x6 at 130kg. As mom’s, so many of us carry the mantra of being willing to die for our families. Moms put themselves and their needs behind everyone else. We stand to the side, selectively miss out on opportunities, and minimize our own health. We feel guilty or selfish when we take care of ourselves, instill healthy habits and make time to make our bodies strong. Our children, partners, family and friends watch, observe, and learn from how we show up for ourselves. When we prioritize our health and strength, those around us begin to do the same. We need to flip the idea of being willing to die for our families to being willing to live with them! We need to show up for ourselves. We need to push aside the mom guilt. We need to set ourselves up to live, thrive and PARTICIPATE FULLY IN EVERYONE’S LIVES!

Managed to slip up to @618barbell for a quick squat session yesterday. I must confess I was hungover and sleep deprived after a night out with friends on Friday, and my usual "I won't overdo it on the drinks" went out the window as usual. Anyway, was supposed to be 4x3 at 125kg, which I've only ever done in wraps previously. So of course I got in my own head and only managed triples on the first and last set with doubles in between. But still a big win despite there being quite a lot of ugly reps in there 😆 Backoffs 2x3 at 112.5kg and 2x5 paused high bars at 100kg. My weight is coming down a bit, but I’m still not satisfied. I’m about 5-7 pounds off from where I want to be. It’s tough trying to find the motivation to not consume too many calories, but I want to feel good about myself again. So I’m trying. On the first anniversary, Coach Becky and DBK Strength want to celebrate YOU! Over the last year, I’ve watched clients make giant stride in not just their exercises routines but how they are showing up for themselves and more fully participating in their lives. Not quite the session I was hoping for, but I guess it was still OK for day 2 of my cycle. Had programmed 3x3 at 150kg, but after a dub on the first set, I had to drop back to 145kg for the remainder. 3x6 at 125kg backoffs and a humbling 110kg deficit paused for 2x6 to finish. Meet recap about one week late…. Cuz my body decided to rebel after the ProAm. IBS flare up and some epic allergies had me down for the count last week. Not my best meet, not my worst. No PRs, but I had lots of fun, as always. Only got my squat opener at 540. Came up early, and therefor high on my second attempt - was never really in position. And the third? Well…. Let’s just say getting a super wrap - twice - was not conducive to even being able to pick a weight I’ve stood up with countless times. But, as in all things, we learned some shit. Like…. More time in stranglin’ wraps is a good thing. Bench opened around 250, think I got 280ish, and those moved great…. but couldn’t move 315 off my chest. Pulls, 355 and 375 I think. Even though it wasn’t my best day on the platform, I will never fault anything other than my own lack of preparedness. What did we learn from this one; How do we do better next time. What are the variables I can control? Those are the takeaways. I probably could say that some health issues about 10 weeks out didn’t help matters, as prep was delayed. — @queenbeepower puts on the best meet I’ve ever seen - and with almost 30 years in this sport… I’ve seen a lot of good meets. This is the cream of the crop. The vibe at this meet - both days of it - is unequaled. The crew that helps Laura put this meet on is phenomenal. And that spotting & loading team gets big praise too. I have never once worried if they would have my back. Because they always do. And hey, @bain316 is just the best. Periodt. — So back to the drawing board this week. I’m still chasing 1355. Made some notes. Got the training calendar started.. Next meet is just under 26 weeks away. SPF’s Riverbend Rebellion in Evansville in October. Almost literally in the shadow of where it all began for me in 1995 - at @uevansville. I can’t wait to feel like this again. I’ve worked so hard and sacrificed so much. Just 12 more days!!! I’m also excited because I will be competing in my first women-only meet: Ladies of Iron. 👸🏿👸🏾👸🏽👸🏻👸🏼 Sharing the platform with so many other powerful women is going to be epic. I just know it. My biggest hope is that this meet will encourage women who don’t lift heavy or lift at all to start doing so. After all, watching other women who powerlift is what encouraged ME to start. I never imagined I’d be lifting anything close to what I lift now. Us women are so much stronger than we give ourselves credit for and it’s such a confidence-booster. And this meet will definitely showcase that. The way muscle mass makes you look, love it or hate it, is inconsequential compared to what it does for your health and longevity. Muscle mass preserves your freedom. Without it, you don’t get to CHOOSE how you live. This isn’t a conversation about being strong enough to impose your will on others; it’s about the fact that so many people stop doing things they love far too early in life because their bodies can’t handle it. Muscle mass is also a powerful shield against cognitive decline. Working muscle releases compounds (myokines) that protect the nervous system. The more muscle you have, the more protection you get. When you don’t have enough, your brain becomes more vulnerable. Muscle mass isn’t a pursuit of vanity; it’s a responsibility.
