I have found out that there is a route on Aoraki's South Face called Slovenian Route. What's more, it was first climbed by Vanja Furlan, a Slovenian climber from Novo mesto (my home town) in 1994! A family of kea playing on the slopes of the Avalanche Peak in Arthurs Pass National Park, just after sunrise. Adults and juveniles are differentiated by the color of their beaks - juveniles have yellow beaks, that turn grey when entering adulthood. Juveniles are tolerated even by unrelated adults and this promotes learning of complex foraging skills. An incredible moment to witness. Kea (Nestor notabilis) are the only alpine parrots in the world, endemic to the Southern Alps of New Zealand. Back in November 2023 we hiked up to the French Ridge Hut, a famous alpine hut in the heart of Mount Aspiring National Park. The hut, popular between mountaineers, is an entry point to the Bonar Glacier and the mountains around, such as Mount Avalanche, Popes Nose and Mount Tititea. The vibe of the hut is something else compared to the tramping huts, with everyone getting ready for their ascends, waking up well in the night in order to seize the best snow conditions possible. The moonlike landscape of Mount Titiroa (1715 m.a.s.l.) in Fiordland National Park is a result of the white granite rock and its erosion. Even though not high in altitude, the path going up is diverse, not that well marked, and includes some step bush bashing. Pikirakatahi / Mount Earnslaw with 2830 m.a.s.l. is the second highest mountain of Mount Aspiring National Park. It dominates the landscape north of Whakatipu-wai-māori (Lake Wakatipu). In December (too soon in the season) we tried to ascend its East Peak, but were forced to retreat just 150 vertical meters below the summit due to solid ice build up on the exposed gully. Southern Falls, with an impressive 580m of lenght, were once believed to be the highest waterfall in New Zealand. They are a side trip to the Milford track, undoubtedly the most famous multiday trek in the country, that we completed just before the start of the season. No matter where you are, the area is filled with lush green hills, bushes, trees, and flowers. Hobbiton was awesome. I'm sad we came a little too early to experience the immerse yourself into Hobbit life by going into a Hobbit hole. Regardless, we got a lovely Stine to bring home with us. Our hotel for the evening is off the water and the views are amazing. While we aren't able to appreciate the hot springs as we don't have time, we did have a lovely five course vegan meal. There are in-house shows that make breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The hotel is small and intimate with a few other couples. We also went shopping in Auckland, where I picked out outfits such as the shrug, top, and skirt at Dangerfield.
