• ALL THE GIRLS • It's such a joy to have my eldest daughter here with us. The world feels a little less out of tilt with 2 out of my 3 here with me. As a mum, I'm very much of the opinion that we are simply temporary caretakers and guides (that comes with a whole host of jobs and responsibilities, of course) for our offspring. That part of our role is to show them to follow their hearts, take risks, and choose yourself. However, not having all 3 of my kids here with me has definitely proven to be a much harder obstacle to overcome. It feels physical the missing them, the wanting or needing to be with them. It's a bit of a battle between what I want, need, and am able to do. So the joys in seeing my eldest choose her own adventure and to start it here with me fills me with endless joy! Pikirirakatahi pt 1: the approach Ooof the excitement and anticipation of this climb was REAL. I danced it off on the shores of lake Wakatipu as I waited for my hustled makeshift 2 minute noodle/mushroom soup/canned chicken dinner to cook. I had dismissed the possibility of this climb due to the short weather and time window I had and decided to just go up single cone solo - it felt like resignation though and I wanted a whole body YES. And so, at 6pm on Sunday, anxiously browsing route descriptions, I came to the conclusion that I may as well give it a nudge - valley to summit in a day and if it all took too long there were bivvy spots everywhere. I raced down to @smallplanetsports to buy the right topo map, did a quick scan of my gear to check that I was actually equipped for this...and drove towards Glenorchy. I sent voice messages loaded with excitement. This climb was meaningful in multiple ways. I spent childhood and teen summers under the watchful eye of this mountain. These hills hold much of my teen angst. I first learned to drive here, on the gravel riverbed in the old manual van. This is where I came to feel safe and held in the forest. Where we went tramping in the blistering sun and the sandfly clouds and the snowstorms. And where I faced fears, sometimes was overcome by them and sometimes overcame them...but I was always still a lil bookworm. Not a 'sporty kid'. To climb a peak was not even in my world, and so Pikirirakatahi watched over me, but to go and meet him was an unknown unknown. It's not that it felt out of reach, it's that it didn't even enter my consciousness as a possibility. It felt ELECTRIC to allow myself to think that maybe I could do this. Pikirakatahi / Mount Earnslaw with 2830 m.a.s.l. is the second highest mountain of Mount Aspiring National Park. It dominates the landscape north of Whakatipu-wai-māori (Lake Wakatipu). In December (too soon in the season) we tried to ascend its East Peak, but were forced to retreat just 150 vertical meters below the summit due to solid ice build up on the exposed gully. Happy Christmas camping 🎅 ⛺ Just like last year, our Christmas is spent camping. Not like last year, on the beach, but under the Earnslaw Glacier 🏔️ It’s quite a journey to get here. For 6 hours you are hiking through thick forest sections, not seeing more than trees or fallen trees. Only for the last hour does the forest open up and you have a view of the valley. Now you can’t keep count of the endless waterfalls around you. I’m not sure this beautiful lake even has a name, but we flew over it on the approach to Earnslaw Burn so I’m going to assume it’s the one feeding Hunter Creek. Somehow I managed to switch between camera and iPhone 😳😂 and I got a video of it so you can see I haven’t changed the colours at all. First day was pretty cool but nothing compare to day number two. I woke up in front of the glacier and climb up to Lennox saddle. It is actually not so bad only last hundred metres is quite scatchy. But no pain no gain and this saddle and later on ridge line offer so much. It was stunning walk back to carpark, no people at all, just me and this still untouched landscape. Untouched compare to Europe where we have roads and ski fields bloody everywhere. I guess that might be the biggest reason why I love New Zealand so much. A truly amazing and unforgettable experience this was, glad I decided to spend the night here rather than day trip it. Allowed me to spend a lot more time exploring the glacier trying to find ice tunnels, couldn't find any big enough to walk around in but plenty that I could crawl in lol. Easily the most waterfalls in one place I've seen so far. The hike was a lot more exhausting then I expected but easily worth it for views like this. Photos and videos honestly do no justice for just how beautiful this place was. Throwback Travel Thursday! It’s was a splurge but a memory we will never forget! Chartered a helicopter from Queenstown, New Zealand. 1. We landed at Mount Earnslaw (featured in Lord of the Rings) SURROUNDED by humongous 2800 meter waterfalls, reachable only by helicopter OR by hiking and mountain climbing for days. (We opted for helicopter 😏) Drank the freshest, coldest water straight from the mountaintops. Felt like a (family) date from The Bachelor 😂 catered and all! 2. Second stop was on top of a GLACIER in the middle of NZ’s summer. Surreal. The smoke from neighbouring Australia’s fires cause the pink hue. 3. Finished up at Milford Sound with a cruise through towering mountain faces on either side. 25/01/2023 - 26/01/2023 - Earnslaw Burn Track 🏔️ So I made a list of 10 tramps I wanted to do this summer, not at all realising how much harder tramping tracks that aren't Great Walks, are! I think it's the hours of walking per day more than anything else - although I will say that this one required a lot of climbing over & crawling under, fallen trees! & it was muddy! The valley at the end of it, though... WOW! If you want to do this one; I would urge you to stay for 2 nights to give you time to really explore & experience it. Mount Earnslaw / Pikirakatahi is one of the most iconic mountains in the area. It has two main summits, the East Peak (9,308 ft) and the West Peak (9,261 ft), together with a number of lesser peaks it separates the Rees Valley on the east and the Dart Valley on the west, at the head of Lake Wakatipu.

Ventured into #earnslawburn to camp last night with a plan to try take a photo of the milky way above Mount Earnslaw. Set my alarm for 2am when the core was going to align at just the right angle above the mountains and woke up to find the clouds had rolled in 😒 Luckily earlier that evening as I approached camp the moon was setting so I quickly switched to my zoom lens and snapped a few pics and managed to stitch this image together 📷🏔🥾

Antroji diena taip pat nebuvo lengva. Turėjome sulipti Earnslaw viršūnę (sukilti apie 600m) ir tada nusileisti iki trobos susirinkti daiktus, kirsti ledyną ir leistis atgal žemyn. Sulipti sekėsi gerai, radom ir kaminą apie kurį pasakojo draugai, kad reikės kirsti arba naudojantis virvės pagalbą užsikabaroti per kitą pusę. Aš su Mari lindom per kaminą, uch kaip siaura buvo, teko rankom išsistūmt save. Hmm atgal būtų labai nejauku lipti žemyn. Atgal padarėm kaip Vaidas, leidomės virve. O ryte dar daug vietų užšalusių buvo, tai taip slidu buvo, daug varveklių radom. Po poros valandų kabarojomosi, lipimo uolomis, pasiekėm viršunę. Vaizdai nerealūs! Dar niekad nemačiau NZ tiek snieguotų ir ledynų apsuptų viršūnių🏔️❤️ sėdėjom ten ilgai, sėdėjom, grožėjomės ir nenorėjom leistis žemyn. Oras nerealus, debesiukai tik labai toli matosi. Po geros valandos praleistos ant viršūnės leidomės žemyn. Pamatėm savo draugus ant O'Leary viršūnės. Ji gerokai žemesnė, tik 2570m. Bandėm susikalbėt, šūkavom, o aidas viską atkartojo. Dar ant viršūnės galvojom gal ir fainai būtų ir antrą viršūnę sulipt. Galvojom, svarstėm ir nusprendėm pabandyt. Jokio tako nebuvo, žodžiu varėm nuobyrynais. Keturiom😅 biški nuklydom ir supratom kad čia per statu užsiropšti, truputį pasileidę žemyn, radom ne tokią stačią vietą, per ten ir sulipom. Ant O'leary peak ilgai nesedėjom nes spaudė laikas. Pasibuvom ir leidomės atgal. O atgal labai greitai tais nuobyrynais nučiuožėm žemyn. Pirmoji diena - tik 21km bet pasiekiame 2275m aukštį🆙🏞️ Pradėjom ryte, pajudėjom apie 9h ryto. Pirmieji 10km jau žinomi iš praeito žygio Cascade saddle ir jie tokie nemalonūs nes eini per pelkę. Realiai ieškai sausų vietų...nepavyko, sušlapom batus, kad ir kiek stengiaus šokinėt, apeidinėt. Vėliau lengvas kilimas mišku. Pietaujame jau kirtę miško zoną, su slėnio vaizdu ir kalnais. Po pietų traukiam toliau. Daug ėjimo pieva, tik kad kilimas jau labai status. Vėliau prasideda akmenys ir uolos, todėl pasidaro sunkiau rasti kelią. Apie 6h vakaro pasiekiam ledyną. Matom Wrighton col perėja ir ant jos žmogų, kuris leidžiasi uolomis. Kol jis nusileido žemyn mes svarstėm ką daryt, eiti uolomis ar ledynu. Kates ir ledkirčius turim. Pasirodo, žmogelis yra mūsų draugo Arnes, kuris dabar viršuje yra, draugas. Pasišnekam, pataria eiti ledynu. Paklausom, dedames kates ir judam tolyn. Randam dar draugų pėdsakus. Pasiekiam perėją! Pasidarom porą nuotraukų. Ir žygiuojam link Esquilant hut'o, kur šiąnakt ten ir miegosim. Matėm pasakiškai gražų saulėlydį, dangus buvo raudonas raudonas! Šios vasaros tikriausiai didžiausias mūsų iššūkis! Tai ilgai norėtas - MOUNT EARNSLAW East peak (2835m)⛰️🏔️ Antra aukščiausia viršūnė Mount Aspiring national park. Iš vakaro išsinuomavom Queenstown miestelį įrangą ir leidžiamės vakarop į Glenorchy. Ten susitinkam su drauge Marie, kuri prisijungė prie mūsų į šį žygį. Kol aš pasivaikščiojau aplink miestelį, Vaidas turėjo online pokalbį su kinezu (na ir mankštelę dar neblogą pasidarė😅). Manau iš šalies ne kaip atrodė, tamsu, o jis prie general store (kaimo parduotuvėlė) sportuoja😅. O Čiurna dar pilnai neatsistačius ir pirmas žygis po traumos ir dar toks visai rimtas, visas kalnas, bus matyt kaip čia bus, tikimės be traumų šįkart. Po Vaido mankštos traukiam į vietą nuo kur pradėsim žygį, o ir ten nakvosim. Earnslaw burn hika's puikus tiems, kas nori pakempinti🏕️ ir nori nesunkiai nueiti iki gražių vaizdų, kur puikiai atsiveria Mount Earnslaw ledynas ir iš jo tekantys kriokliai. Priklausomai nuo pasirinktos nakvynės vietos, hikas gali trukti nuo 3.5h iki 5h. Mūsų planas buvo miegot kuo arčiau ledyno, ten kur patys geriausi vaizdai. Plius vienas draugas sakė tik nestokit iškart išėję iš miško, eikit toliau, ten bus daug gražiau. Bet, deja, teko stot tik išėjus iš miško, kadangi lygioj vietoj @vaidasjaz koją sugebėjo išsisukt. Žinai, kai eini 3.5h mišku be jokių vaizdų, o tada bam išlendi iš miško ir Mount Earnslaw prieš akis. Užsižiopsoji😅 Koja iškart ištino. Dar galvojom gal dar pavyktų grįžti visą kelią atgal. Bet turejom tik 3h šviesos, o su tokia koja atgal eisim žymiai ilgiau. Pasilikom campint. Aš dar greit sulaksčiau patikrint kaip tas ledynas su kriokliais atrodo. Gražu❤️🏔️ gaila, kad nepavyko ten campinti, kur norėjom. O ryte paršlubavom per 4h atgal iki mašinos. Tiksliau tikėjaus, kad užtruksim ilgiau, bet @vaidasjaz labai jau norėjo greičiau baigt šitą nenusisekusį žygį. Apsilankėm Emergency. Mount Earnslaw East Peak ( 2830 Meters ) It was my goal all along, to climb the 2nd highest peak in Mt Aspiring National Park. For the past year I’ve been training myself how to safely climb on snow terrain, be confident to scramble on steep rocky terrain. And I got to say I’ve finally made it. To me this was my biggest climbing achievement so far.
