The spots on this early 2024 brown were seriously insane! ✨ It’s so interesting see how fish from different systems can vary so dramatically and be so consistent within each respective river system. So we did some research and found out that genetically🧬 different trout are capable of spawning together and producing viable offspring but many populations have remained distinct for generations, giving distinct look in different regions. 🌎 In this NSW system they all seemed to be very similar being super spotty + all smashing dry flies 😉 . #norfolkwild #coast #field #stream
Black Swallowtail Caterpillar (Papilio polyxenes) in my backyard, September 2023. The orange "horns" on the caterpillar's head are defensive glands which release a pungent odor (like rotten cheese) when the caterpillar is disturbed. I employed my 3 year old son to capture this moment (those are his crumb covered fingers bothering the caterpillar). . This photo is one of 20 that I selected from the past blogging year, check out my post at norfolknaturalist.ca to see and learn about the other photos I selected. . . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #blognorfolk #blackswallowtail #caterpillar #norfolkwild #natureinnorfolk #insects_of_our_world

Our latest addition to the backyard, a Striped Skunk (Mephitis mephitis), affectionately named "Jam" by my son. Striped Skunks are often feared for their odour or viewed as pests but they commonly eat grubs and insects that damage plants. As with most animals, if you don't bother them, they won't bother you and you can enjoy the sight of their fluffy black and white fur. If a Skunk has located itself in your backyard during the month of May it's likely a female that has just given birth. In which case you should be advised to not try to relocate the skunk at this time. You may be treated to the sight of baby skunks when they begin to forage with their mother when they are 7-8 weeks old. Fingers crossed. . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #stripedskunk #mephitis #mephitismephitis #skunk #skunks #urbanwildlife #norfolkcountywildlife #blognorfolk #norfolkwild #mammals
This is my reminder to bring my camera on the trail always... on a quick wander, I spotted a Blister beetle (of the genus Meloe), and what's more it had another beetle on its back. The beetle hitchhiker is likely a member of the family Pyrochroidae, possibly in the genus Pedilus, these beetles gather the defensive chemicals of Blister Beetles for their own defenses. . This pic was taken with my phone but it turned out ok, next time I'll have my camera ready! . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #blisterbeetle #meloe #pyrochroidae #beetlesofinstagram #naturalhistory #coleoptera #beetlesoftheworld #entomology #norfolkphotographer #norfolkwild #blognorfolk #lynnvalleytrail
Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) gosling and parent in Grant Anderson Park, Simcoe, this past weekend. The Rut 2023 has been a blast.. but it’s not over yet. 🦌 This year has been another big learning curve for us. Getting to know and understand Australian deer behaviour, enjoying time in the mountains with mates and best of all gathering an appreciation for where our food comes from, it’s all of these things that make spending time in the outdoors the most valuable experience. With that said, we’ve just restocked our coffee supply from @dogandguncoffee , loaded up some beers and we’re heading off again this week to try and stock the freezers. See ya out there! #Norfolkwild
