A pleasant way to spend a day off, though forgetting sun cream is probably a mistake that will come back to haunt me tomorrow 😂 A nice jaunt around some local sites, seeing some new insects for the year, green hairstreak butterfly, orange tip butterfly, blue tailed damselfly. A less local jaunt was a brief detour to a Waitrose car park where 4 lazy (or smart) waxwings were still devouring the berries of an ornamental bush. Waxwings in May! Latest I’ve ever had them. Later on I paid my first visit to another local site this year, Felixstowe Ferry and had a lovely evening watching a short eared owl hunting and a variety of summer migrants singing their hearts out. Although the water vole is widespread throughout the UK, it is listed as endangered on both the Great Britain and the England Red List for Mammals. Magnificent insects 🕷️ as the weather warms more invertebrates begin to emerge! Some sightings from our teams working across Suffolk this April ⬇️ 🦋 Holly blue butterfly (Celastrina argiolus) - the first blue butterfly to appear in the year. If you see a flash of blue flutter by in April or May it will be this species, as other similar species such as small blue and common blue emerge in the summer months. 🪲 Minotaur beetle (Typhaeus typhoeus) - an important part of Knettishall Heath’s ecosystem, as they feed on the waste of the grazing ponies and take the dung back to their nests which can be up to 1.5 meters deep! 🕸️ Fen raft spider (Dolomedes plantarius) - this impressive and very rare spider can reach up to 7cm in diameter, making it one of the UKs largest spiders! This species was discovered at our Redgrave & Lopham fen nature reserve in 1956, and we’ve seen increasing numbers at Carlton Marshes following a successful reintroduction scheme. #suffolk #wildlife #insect #naturereserve #suffolkwildlife #butterfly #hollyblue #beetle #raftspider
Our St George’s Day haul! 🍄😋🏴 A feast day of St George has been celebrated in England for hundreds of years, marking the possible date of his martyrdom back in the 4th century. For those of you interested - google for more deets! 🤓 🧺 At Milden, we have our own feasts on the bountiful St George’s mushrooms! These mushrooms are so-called because in some years they appear in large lush rings in grassland, on or around St George’s Day 🏴 🍴These creamy white/pale buff mushrooms are one of the few delicious edibles in spring. We eat them in quiches, fried on toast and dry them for winter soups. 🪲 We only pick where they are plentiful and we always leave as many unpicked as picked to ensure they shed their spores for another year. That way, the flies and beetles have their own feast too! 📚 Juliet will be running a series of fungi courses in the autumn for enthusiastic beginners, focussing on identification of larger woodland species. In the early hours we lost our spiny little brother, Chipstick, who came to us with his sister after their mother abandoned the nest in early July 2017. It was estimated that they were between 3 and 4 weeks old at the time, eyes barely open and very wobbly on their feet, and the experts we contacted believed they would not survive. Somehow both defied expectation and we were successfully able to rewild the sister on a lovely secluded Orchard not far away. Chip however became woefully domesticated, turning his nose up at the natural foods we tried to encourage him with and so ended up a permanent resident. To think he was creeping up on seven years of age when he finally passed is pretty bonkers and just goes to prove you should never listen to the nay-sayers. The interesting mix of trees at Arger Fen includes oak, ash, field maple, holly, crab apple, superb large alder and hazel stools. Brandon Country Park 🌲 A beautiful country park amongst the forest. There are multiple walking trails starting from the car park. We walked towards the park lake and said hello to the ducks and ducklings 🐥 We carried on into the forest, found some impressive dens, large logs, and tree stumps to climb on. It was peaceful, listening to many birds and seeing squirrels scutter along in the leaves. We finished at the park which is suitable for a range of ages! We also treated ourselves in the cafe, the staff were incredibly friendly and so helpful in regard to allergy awareness and their products. There is a walled garden next to the cafe, but we didn't explore this today as these explorers were keen to get to the park! It is free to enter, just pay for parking. £2 for two hours or £3 for all day - an absolute bargain. Multiple picnic benches / seating areas along the trails, too. I enjoyed sketching this hare. I do love detailed drawing but it’s so good to feel a little more freedom and be a bit more expressive with the mark making. It also stops you thinking too much so that you draw more intuitively. Painting, for me, has the same effect.
