When the incredible @style.design.create suggested painting existing furniture for some of the rooms I was hesitant. βHow will I find timeβ, βitβs a lot of hard workβ, βdoes it really look okayβ, βwhat if I donβt like itβ, βwhere do you get Farrow and Ball furniture paintβ were all questions that put me off as I nodded and smiled, loving the ideas but not thinking Iβd ever get round to them! Well cue unexpected unemployment mixed with a need to keep busy, and at the moment if it stays still I paint it! Thankfully my 4 year old never stays still so he is fairly safe π It is so cheap and easy! The biggest revelation for me is the kitchen units. They were old, chipped and generally minging when I moved in. Iβve scrubbed them so many times but they never come up as well as I would like. I canβt afford a new kitchen at the moment so thought I was having to make do. Then I had an ideaβ¦ I popped to @bandq_uk and got @valsparpaintuk premium wood and metal paint mixed in Hague Blue for Β£42, layered 2 coats and added some new handles at Β£7.50 each from @ironmongerydirectuk suddenly Iβm going to have a new kitchen! National gardening weekπ When we bought our house the garden did daunt me/ us slightly (it still does). We had no clue what we were doing really, especially after living in London for 14 years. However we are truly learning as we go and itβs very much a labour of love. We are a very outdoorsy family and we always give things our best shot. Weβve made some mistakes, got some things right and also been very lucky with the rest (wisteria pruning gives me much stress). Weβre redoing our vegetable garden this year to make it all more manageable. The previous owners were retired and had much spare time; but we donβt and we arenβt going the vegetable area any justice at all or what it deserves. So this year the plan is to strip it all back and next year add in one or two small beds which will make it much easier for us as a family. We love getting the girls involved in it all (Evie doesnβt need many excuses when it comes to mud), and we want to plant a few more trees with them so they can see them grow as they get older. Itβs definitely a lifestyle change, but one that we adore. With all the stresses life brings, nature and greenery bring so much calm. Now letβs hope the climbing roses come back out to play this year and we didnβt mess those up! Warmthβ¦ The log burner is finally in place and not a βcoffee tableβ in our front room. It looked huge in our tiny front room but suddenly looks dwarfed in the Chapel. The warmth is kicked out during the test burn was huge so I think once there is other furniture it will be fine. π₯ Few things to sort - silver screws in the black brackets (why?!) and bit of shoddy finish around the collar in the ceiling. The big reveal has taken place. Iβve been waiting since 2020 to get that awful plastic cladding off and to see what it was hiding. I had vague childhood memories of passing this house and seeing black & white βTudoresqueβ woodwork, and it turns out I was right!!! The dilemma now is what to do with it. The condition is extremely poor, and it will need to come off in order to deal with the very ropey brickwork behind it - there are huge gaps that will need filling before it can be re-rendered before the new windows go in. The big question is how to reinstate the original pattern - who can do it and how much will it cost? 09.05 Baby arrived early this morning, a few days before his due date. While are are completely over the moon in love with him, this meant we left the birth center to come home to a house that didnβt have any running water except from one toilet and a temporarily installed laundry tub π . Luckily (?!) my labor spanned two days giving Eric time to connect all our brand new electrical wires into the panel yesterday. After earning a BS in Construction Management from the University of Wisconsin, JP honed his craft as a carpenter before settling in the vibrant Portland area in 1998.
