Today is World Ovarian Cancer Day. We are sending our support to every Ovarian Cancer patient and survivor. Wearing teal is a way to show your support today! Ovarian Cancer can be hard to detect because most patients do not feel any symptoms until it has advanced. Sadly, this causes ovarian cancer to be the fifth leading cause of cancer deaths amongst women. According to the Center for Disease Control, some symptoms of ovarian cancer are pelvic pain, bloating, difficulty eating, and a change in bathroom habits and frequency. If ovarian cancer runs in your family, or if you are feeling abnormal digestive and abdominal pain, speak to your primary care provider, or schedule an appointment with your gynecologist. Linda Reinstein lost her husband, Alan, almost twenty years ago to mesothelioma. A cancer that is often synonymous with asbestos. And it's not the only cancer diagnosis tied to asbestos.... According to the EPA, asbestos is linked to more than 40,000 mesothelioma, lung, ovarian, and laryngeal cancer deaths every year. That's why groups such as the EPA are celebrating last month's ruling to ban chrysotile asbestos. Reinstein, however, pointed out that the ban also has a tremendously long transition period. A timeline meant to minimize disruption for organizations that rely heavily on the product. One might venture to say that supply chain constraints don't factor into Reinstein's realm of concern when she knows this will inevitably lead to more asbestos exposure and contamination - cascading a wave of cancer cases and deaths for another several years. This week was an emotional one for me and I don’t even know why. I was sad in a miss you kind of way. It started with watching the Olympic marathon trials and watching Dakotah finish in third. Her mom died in 2020 and when she said that my water works started. I know how she feels to miss her mom at this exact moment. No congratulations hug. No I’m so proud of you. No phone call of just crying in joy. It was followed by a week of my nephew and niece tackling potty training and absolutely crushing it. My mom would be so happy for this level of life to be unlocked for my brothers as parents. Then there is my nephew who had high school orientation. That makes 2 in high school for my sister and my mom would talk about how it was to have kids in all the schools and how she made it work. And finally it’s my niece having kindergarten orientation. My mom would love to hear her take on how big the school was and what the classrooms look like and just watching Ellie with the big smile and all the hand gestures to go along with it. It’s missing the close lean in and arm around your shoulder with her patting you on the back and the tongue smack and her saying I’m so proud of you while she holds back the tears that you can hear in her voice. So grief, you can suck it. I modified the recipe from the original, subbing olive oil for butter and vegan 'cream' instead of crème fraîche. My sister and BIL are visiting here from Vancouver for a few days - one is vegan, one is diabetic, so a potentially challenging food project 😆 For lunch today, I made a great dip: a whole bulb of garlic, red peppers and carrots, which were roasted in olive oil, then blended with butter beans, vegan feta (thank you Plant Kitchen from @marksandspencerfood), lemon juice, smoked paprika and chili flakes. Grief sucks. My mom has been gone a year and a half and the grief still sucks. This week was an emotional one for me and I don’t even know why. I was sad in a miss you kind of way. It started with watching the Olympic marathon trials and watching Dakotah finish in third. Her mom died in 2020 and when she said that my water works started. I know how she feels to miss her mom at this exact moment. No congratulations hug. No I’m so proud of you. No phone call of just crying in joy. It was followed by a week of my nephew and niece tackling potty training and absolutely crushing it. My mom would be so happy for this level of life to be unlocked for my brothers as parents. Then there is my nephew who had high school orientation. That makes 2 in high school for my sister and my mom would talk about how it was to have kids in all the schools and how she made it work. And finally it’s my niece having kindergarten orientation. My mom would love to hear her take on how big the school was and what the classrooms look like and just watching Ellie with the big smile and all the hand gestures to go along with it. It’s missing the close lean in and arm around your shoulder with her patting you on the back and the tongue smack and her saying I’m so proud of you while she holds back the tears that you can hear in her voice. So grief, you can suck it. And cancer, you really need to go home too. #missmymom #ovariancancersucks #fucancer #griefawareness

"@ou.health announced Friday that researchers at the Stephenson Cancer Center are playing a major role in making a new, more effective treatment available to patients dealing with reoccurring – sometimes chemo-resistant – ovarian cancer. The team at OU Health recently wrapped up phase three trials for the drug, MIRV." - ABC's Koco News 5 The drug is meant to be a targeted (honing in solely on the tumor cell) option for those with longer cancer treatment journies. While the drug still has to receive full approval in the US & Europe, OU's Kathleen Moore, the Associate Director of Clinical Research, has said the drug is ready for patients who would fit the aforementioned criteria. There are hopes that this drug would offer patients higher efficacy with fewer side effects. 👌 Sounds like great work coming from @ou.health - thank you for your efforts 🦋.
