Did you know that Pacific Madrone flower in May? They do. And they are flowering now all around Seattle and the PNW. I guess my love for these trees is because they remind me of us. Clutching on to the side of a cliff, standing amongst trees in the forest, shedding old bark to reveal the new, reaching for the sun, twisting and turning in every way, rising from the ash. On September 19, 2021, Dylan and I headed to Rosario Beach and checked out the Maiden of Deception Pass, aka Ko-kwal-alwoot, who’s Coast Salish legend prompted the creation of her statue and story posts here. As you walk around the grassy knoll of Rosario Head, you can see Bowman Bay, the Salish Sea, and the San Juan Islands, making this one of my favorite places to enjoy! Deception Pass State Park is a great camping location, which I highly recommend to anyone visiting the area, though they do book up quickly in the tourist season. 🌊

I’ve held a friend and felt his lungs and heart expand and contract as he took his last breath. I’ve loved so deeply that I forgot who I was, and then lost that love, which forced me to become someone else. I’ve stood on a mountain top, and watched the slow breath of fog swallow an entire city before the sun came up. I’ve stared into the eyes of wolves, and had them stare back at me, through me. And saw a friend in those eyes. I’ve looked down the barrel of a gun, and seen the desperate face of a man on the other side, trying to take what I had to survive. They say life is an adventure. But an impossible one to prepare for. The cosmic mix of experiences and emotions consume what we know as space time and we do all that we can to move through it. Lynden, WA has a lot of Dutch influence. It was no coincidence we stayed in a windmill! They’ve done so much incredible work making their city inviting and beautiful. They pay homage to their Dutch influence with windmills aplenty throughout their downtown and informational plaques about immigrants from the Netherlands. They also have a beautiful statue to honor Phoebe Judson, the founder of Lynden! Besides the windmills, Lynden also showcases their love of raspberries!! Look at those raspberry flower displays they have throughout their downtown! Following the Pearl Harbor incident, an airfield was built in Tofino as a defense against a possible Japanese invasion. In 1945, this bomber went down just off the coast due to an engine malfunction. All 12 occupants survived! After spending a night, the crew launched a flare the next morning at a passing plane, and they got rescued shortly after. On September 19, 2021, Dylan and I headed to Deception Pass State Park and hiked part of the Goose Rock Trail and immersed ourselves in some “forest bathing,” appreciating the water views of Deception Pass along the path. Then we headed down to North Beach to soak in the iconic view of the famous bridge and comb the beach despite the cloudy weather. Dylan was all bundled up because he was cold, while I was fine in just my leggings and long sleeve shirt. Our next stop was West Beach with its scattered driftwood along the shore and 180* views of Rosario Strait, as well as nearby Deception Island. The cloud cover started to open up a little, allowing some blue skies to peak through. 🌤️

Lake 22, 5.9 miles, elevation gain 1350ft This birthday hike filled my heart! I got utterly soaked hiking 2h15 in the rain, crossing rushing water in multiple spots, hoping on slippery rocks, stepping over wet roots. but oh! how alive I felt on this special morning. Each step vigorously taking me towards the top, each breath inflating my lung and propelling me further, blood rushing, muscles contracting. I felt so grateful for this body machine that seemed to bear the effort with ease! My soul was in peace, immersed into Nature, immersed into the beauty of my surroundings. It’s official! In one month I will be moving to Tacoma, WA! The last year has been a little crazy, but I have learned so much and met some of the most amazing people here in Nebraska. I am truly thankful for the lifelong friendships I made with these beautiful humans. I knew Nebraska was going to be a bit of a gamble for me. I was excited for the opportunity to really shift into a formal quality and patient safety role and that shift has been invaluable. Unfortunately, from a broader life perspective when an opportunity to move to the Pacific Northwest came along, there was no doubt in my mind it was the right next move. I have wanted to live in this area of the country for a long time and I can’t wait to get out and explore this new landscape I am going to call home!
