Travel Journal: April 26, 2024 Death Valley NP Third time’s a charm. After two cancellations due to COVID and road closures, we finally made it to Death Valley. If you know me, you know I’m obsessed with the desert and this was a huge bucket list item for me. I was sweating bullets all week looking at the forecast. Any chance of rain isn’t something you want to see when venturing around out here as low infiltration rates make it prime for flash flooding. And when you have an itinerary planned to the minute (granted, I’m smart enough to leave some buffers), it can be a recipe for disappointment. We weren’t down in Vegas for more than an hour before the rain hit and started one of the most magical days of my life. The blue skies emerged again as we drove in toward the Amargosa Mountains, wildflowers painting the ground in yellow, orange, and purple. I found myself totally choked up - a first, despite having had many emotional moments driving into some of my favorite spots. After all, we’d just driven through a torrential downpour in the Mojave and were about to enter Death Valley during a super bloom season. In three hours, our day had granted us experiences that we’ll be talking about for the rest of our lives. As we descended into the valley, the storm clouds loomed ominously over the opposite ridge. Ultimately, we decided that the risk/reward ratio was not favorable for our planned hike. In hindsight, we would’ve been fine, but I can’t say I’m upset with the way the rest of the day panned out. These dunes are named for the mesquite tree which grows in abundance in the area. Another cool mining town that we tried to get to was past Panamint springs and was called Panamint City. It was up a seriously curvy seriously unpaved road, I got us up a particularly treacherous bit of road but night was rapidly coming and I didn’t feel like maneuvering back down at night so we decided to call it quits. Perhaps because of how crazy the road is, there were the remnants of stables and a small cabin before you hit the main climb, I assume so people can rest overnight instead of trying that road with minimal lights. Im glad I could see at least these and the old mine shaft. I have been excited out of my mind for this. Here are a couple of shots from what was most likely a once-in-a-lifetime creative opportunity to light paint on Lake Manly in Death Valley National Park. So much effort went into this - the long drive for sparklers, then to the park, getting the gear wet, salt on everything, outfit changes, cut up feet from the salt - but it was very much worth it. This is a collab with @smithastroart who patiently carried along with me on this adventure, from light painting each other to the walk by starlight back to the car, with sinking feet and destroyed shoes, to standing for hours with nowhere to sit, and so much else. The reason I ask is that Death Valley is so big, often time when people say they have been to the Death Valley, they have not been to some of the spots I’ve been to. There are so much beauty in this National Park. We are getting close to that Death part of the Death Valley National Park (not recommended to travel between the months of June-August) when the summer passes (if it does not rain like it did in the last two years) Fall season is a great time for an elopement here. Depending on the type of backdrops you like, they have everything. - Sand Dunes - Cliff - Salt Flats - Amazing Landscape - or even one of the most beautiful night skies in the U.S. Yes they really have everything and unlike the name of the National Park, it is quite beautiful and romantic place. oh and FYI, if you have a few more guests, there’s a wonderful venue in Death Valley National Park as well. Death Valley National Park 🧡 Jedno z najbardziej bezlitosnych miejsc na Ziemi... This isn't just a photograph. It's the result of a fantastical voyage into the heart of the California desert. A small, yet amazing band of intrepid souls, each quirkier than the last, piling into a hulking beast of a van—a 15-seater, its innards gutted at the crack of dawn, seats tossed aside like yesterday's dreams, making room for photo gear, makeup bags, ghost stories, an heirloom ice chest, and a box of Twinkies. Off we set, wheels spinning tales into the eager asphalt, chasing the horizon where the sun kisses the earth with a passion only deserts understand. The landscape unfolds like a tapestry woven by an eccentric grandmother—vivid, surreal, and utterly breathtaking. The dunes rise like golden waves poised to crash into the shores of the sky, each grain of sand a silent witness to the aeons. And there, after miles of trekking over rolling dunes and past painted hills, we behold the mystical Lake Manly. A mirage? Nope. A vestige of ancient waters, now coy and elusive, flirting with the idea of existence. We stood at the edge, peering into the reflective soul of the desert, where time holds its breath and the wind whispers secrets meant only for the boldest of hearts. Nah, this isn’t just a photograph. It’s an epic etched into the memory of those daring enough to dance with the desert, a story to be told and retold whenever the stars dare us to dream wildly and wander freely. By the end of my trip, I was amazed and enchanted by the diversity of landscape this park hosts. Death Valley is the largest national park in the continental USA and doesn’t have only sand dunes. In fact, less than 1% of the desert is covered with dunes. The park hosts landscapes ranging from snow-covered mountains and colorful hills to wildflower-filled meadows and steep, rugged canyons. Is it worth visiting Death Valley? It’s very worth it. Just don’t make the mistake of going during summer. 🇧🇷 Death Valley é aquele parque que não promete nada e entrega tudo. Afinal, o que pode ter de tão especial no meio do deserto além de dunas de areia? Posso dizer que sai surpresa e encantada com a diversidade de paisagens que esse lugar tem a oferecer. Esse é o maior national park do território continental dos EUA e não, não tem apenas dunas de areia. Inclusive, menos de 1% do parque é coberto por dunas. Yep, Death Valley is a little toasty. 🌞 Hottest place, and lowest place, in the country. The white in the middle photos is not sand, it's salt from evaporated water. The rocky photos are from just 15 miles down the road. If you ever come here, make sure you have a full tank of gas. It's a longgg way from one end to the other. In the heart of the desert, where the sun kissed the ancient sands, two souls found each other in the most unexpected of places. 🌙✨ This is one of my favorite galleries I have EVER delivered. It had me reflecting on why that is. TIME + TRUST- I think it boils down to these 2 factors. @paulinasauruss + @christopherkostelecky truly trusted me from the very beginning. They told me they wanted epic sand dunes and I told them I would find the perfect place. She did send me a few inspo shots when we started planning in the early stages but she truly let me embrace all creative avenues when we were out there in the sand. She didn’t have a list of poses she wanted, she trusted me as an artist 🫶🏻 This wasn’t a “quick one hour” photoshoot. This was an experience- we were not rushed, we didn’t have any timelines. We got to be fully present in all the moments, direct sunlight, golden hour, sunset, and blue hour. ☀️🩵 I’ll never forget when we were chatting about how they met and Chris said “I knew I was gonna marry that girl, I had to trick her somehow-because she is WAY OUTTA MY LEAGUE” Here is to more sessions like this- if you are looking for something more. Badwater Basin is the lowest point in North America at 282 feet below sea level. We were lucky to experience Lake Manly during our visit to Death Valley NP. This is a rare opportunity since it’s usually extremely dry. The lake formed from recent storms as water overflowed into the basin, however it’s rapidly evaporating. We were so glad to be able to see it as the reflections of the vast landscapes on the salty water was stunning 😍

Death Valley in bloom is one of my favorite sights to behold. Not only for the amazing beauty, but also because seeing such stunning flowers bloom in a place of harsh adversity is personally inspiring. This was mid day & SO hot 😅 5th shot was taken at the Mesquite Sand Dunes in Death Valley right at sunset- @disa & I sprinted up the dunes to catch the last bit of light- it was so worth it 🥰
