I am home and recuperating! The surgery went as expected: They only had to remove my right lobe and nodule, and now we await the pathology report and my post-op appointment next week. Everyone at @uchealth was absolutely wonderful, kind, helpful, and fast! I had a rough go with nausea yesterday, and it still hurts like the dickens when I swallow, cough, or clear my throat, and I’m pretty sure my soul left my body when I sneezed - but I’m feeling much better today. Here are some high points: my space-age warming blanket in pre-op 🪐, my photogenic brekkie from this morning 📸, and my watch teasing (scolding) me for my lack of movement yesterday. Surgeons recommend one of four general approaches to treating PTC: 1. Total thyroidectomy: removal of the whole thyroid gland 2. Partial thyroidectomy (lobectomy) 3. As a cancer survivor on a mission to raise awareness about Papillary Carcinoma, I'd like to provide in-depth information about this form of breast cancer. Papillary carcinoma can be elusive, but early detection is key, often through routine mammograms. Symptoms that individuals may experience with Papillary Carcinoma can include: * Breast Mass: Papillary carcinoma is typically detected as a cyst or lump, with a size ranging from 2 to 3 cm. These lumps are often palpable and can be found through self-breast exams. * Nipple Discharge: Interestingly, around 50% of papillary carcinomas develop beneath the nipple, leading to bloody nipple discharge. Early detection is crucial for effective treatment. Both regular self-breast exams and mammograms are essential in this regard. September is Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month and I wanted to send lots of compassion, love, and kindness to anyone who has it or who is a survivor. ❤️ According to the Mayo Clinic website: “Thyroid cancer is a growth of cells that starts in the thyroid. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck, just below the Adam's apple. The thyroid produces hormones that regulate heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and weight.” The cancer happens when cells in the thyroid develop changes in their DNA. The changes, which doctors refer to as mutations, tell the cells to grow and multiply rapidly. “The accumulating cells form a mass called a tumor.” Sometimes the thyroid cancer cells can spread to other parts of the body. SYMPTOMS: Most Thyroid cancers don’t cause any symptoms or signs early in the disease. As it grows, it may cause: — Changes to your voice, including increasing hoarseness — Swollen lymph nodes in your neck — Difficulty swallowing — Pain in your throat and neck — A lump (nodule) that can be felt through the skin on the neck TYPES: Thyroid cancer is classified into types, which is based on the kinds of cells found in the tumor. A couple of types: — Papillary Thyroid Cancer: It’s the most common type of thyroid cancer. “Papillary carcinomas are slow-growing, differentiated cancers that develop from follicular cells and in one or both lobes of the thyroid gland.” — Follicular Thyroid Cancer: It’s the second most common type, and is found more frequently in countries with an inadequate dietary take of iodine. I had my first after surgery follow up on Friday with yet another new doctor. Instead of a scan, which I was expecting, she just confirmed the diagnosis, went through my notes and the latest lab results. All seems to be well. My scar is healing like it should and that extra lump above it is going down. I just need one more blood test to see why my white cells are grouping together. She didn’t seem to worry about that so I’m not worrying about that either. I’ll just go and get new blood tests done on Monday. It’s not like I haven’t done one before. She’ll let me know on Friday if there’s a reason to worry. Hopefully there won’t be 🤞 We talked about my after surgery symptoms and how I’m not feeling like my normal self and my body doesn’t feel like mine, it isn’t functioning like mine, or what I’ve used to. She told me that even though thyroid is a small organ removing it will have a major affect on you. It’ll take months or it can take years to feel yourself again. Finding the right Thyroxin level is the key. I’m now back on the original after surgery dosage. We’ll test it for two and half months. Hopefully that extra half a pill per week will give me the energy boost I need. One good thing about my diagnosis is that gluten shouldn’t be a problem with my recovery. It’s #papillarycarcinoma not autoimmune disease so I don’t have to be #glutenfree like some have let me to believe. That should make my life a little easier. It’s still shocking to hear that there’s been cancer. It’s hard to understand that I’ve had cancer cells growing in my body. I don’t think I’ve digested that yet or if I ever will. It just feels unreal.
