An update is in order: First of all, I want to thank you all for continuing to pray for me so much over the last few months. I cannot tell you how much it means to me to know that so many are lifting my situation up in prayer. Though things are still in potential flux, it seems most likely that I will have surgery on May 20 at University of Michigan. There is only so much that they can tell about thyroid cancer ahead of time without scans that contain a lot more radiation, which would be further damaging to my thyroid. After surgery, they will be able to ascertain exactly what type and what stage the cancer is, and whether it has spread. They are, of course, hopeful, that I will be able to keep my leg, and that my voice will not be affected, but those are still fairly large concerns, about which my multiple doctors are conversing. God has been holding me close, and I am doing my best to cope with all of the uncertainty, as well as the weight of this diagnosis. Please pray also for my courage and strength, as well as continued trust in God through this journey ahead. One more important point: Many well-meaning people have implied to me that I must have done something wrong healthwise in order to get cancer. But things are rarely that simple. In my case, I have been on a plant-based diet most of my life, and I’ve been eating mostly raw and many servings of fruits and vegetables daily for the last couple of decades. I have also walked about 5 miles a day for the last 20 years, and do other forms of exercise through the week (including many backpacking trips, like the 160 mile section of the PCT last month that this picture is from). And I have cared for my mental health by seeing a therapist multiple times every month and seeking to live my life with balance and margins. I do not share these lifestyle choices to brag or guilt-trip anyone, but to raise awareness that even people who are seeking to live as healthfully as possible can still get cancer. It just makes me long even more for heaven! #cancerupdate #thyca #backpackingistherapy #godisfaithful #prayersneeded #latergram #pct2024 #californiaaqueduct #sunsetinthemojavedesert #springinthemojavedesert

"But you don't have a thyroid, how do you have cancer?!" I don't frickin know, and believe me, I'm hella frickin annoyed about it. As a matter of fact, I have test prep all week leading up to my PET scan on Friday, and I WANT TO CLIMB OUT OF MY OWN SKIN. I'm so anxious. I think in ALL CAPS all the time because I'm anxious all of the damn time. Monday: thyrogen injection Tuesday: thyrogen injection Wednesday: low dose radioactive iodine pill Thursday: blood work Friday: PET scan Fun fact: I have a bucket list. I'll share it. Just know that I know some of them will not happen in this lifetime. (@taylorswift hit me up if you wanna make a cancer fighter's and her kids' dreams come true.) 1. Attend General Conference with my husband. We'd stay in a hotel and eat in that Italian restaurant @em.vanderwood and Devin hosted their reception lunch in. Attainable. The only tricky thing is the logistics and making sure the babes are all safe. 2. Meet @taylorswift I know this will never, ever happen, but typing that out makes me want to cry. I've grown up listening to her music. I just want to tell her how much that's meant to me. I'd settle for tickets to her concert, but it would literally be a dream come true to hold a conversation with @taylorswift 3. Get courtside seats and take Kyle to a playoffs game of his choice. "That's not something YOU want to do." Look. Last time we went to an NBA game was January 2020. I was hella pregnant. It was in downtown Portland. I loved seeing the twinkle in Kyle's eyes as we watched the game. The fact that he had a great time made it the time of my life. 4. Take the kids to Disneyland or Disney World. I went when I was ten, and boy howdy, it's one of my favorite memories. Or LEGO land. I'm torn on the two. All I know is, I LOVE seeing the kids experience things with awe and excitement. I just got teary eyed writing that. 5. Meet my Korean ancestors/relative. Isn't that so silly? It's something that's been on my bucket list since I was a kid. I'd LOVE to meet/reconnect with my Korean grandmother who made my biological mother eat seaweed soup. What wisdom would she pass to me? I don't know. Maybe I'm romanticizing? #ThyCa

A couple recent, very meaningful, tattoos. 🧬🌱 A *sweet* DNA vine covering my 2-time surgery/cancer parathyroid/thyroid scar on my neck. Growth is a choice. Yes, my DNA is broken, but it’s up to me what I choose to make of my own body. I can live in that brokenness or I can live in the fact that I’m still here. I’m still developing, there’s still a plan for me in these cells. As I look upon it fondly, I find I’m in love with this one. I feel complete again, as though it was always a part of me. “She laughs without fear of the future.” I have a rare view of what my future holds. Folks, it’s never great. BUT how lucky am I to be human in every sense of the word? I see my feeble body in all its decay, yet I make the conscious decision to live for the here and now. My only hope is that I always choose to live this way. Forget the future. I’m living my life for the present. Thank you @handsometonyturrini and @rxvynjade for always giving me bits of my body back. I’m celebrating 9 years CANCER FREE!!! 🦋🎉I wrote the following one year after my diagnosis and I will remind you AGAIN… CHECK YOUR NECK!!! Be your own advocate!🦋…”One year ago today, I heard the words, “You have cancer.” while driving in my car...over the phone. It felt like someone had just punched me in the gut. I wanted to cry, throw up, scream, and laugh all at the same time. Most of all, I didn’t want to believe it was true. After I had my little breakdown in the car, I called a couple of family members and close friends and decided that it was time to (in my cousin’s words) “kick some cancer butt”. So, while my family and friends were fervently praying, I was sleeping peacefully. That peace has never left. I may have had some moments of fear and frustration but that peace is constant. The last year has been hard...really hard. But God has been faithful to provide answers when we needed them, doctors who are skilled in more than just medicine, and a support system that is beyond what I deserve. My doctor keeps telling me that I can’t use the words “cancer free” for 5 years. One down, 4 to go! *** BUT I’m believing for a different report! Doctors don’t know everything. 😉” # #thyca #thyroidcancer #checkyourneck #cancersurvivor

-10.4 LBS 🤍 It’s been a little less than a month since I looked at my work schedule 🗓️ and had a real conversation with myself about how this was my new norm. I can’t change that, but would I could change was my mindset. I thought deep and hard about what I CAN control like what I did with my time and energy when I am home. I started proactively planning the best I could to continue to work on my health/fitness goals on the road. This meant planning meals, checking the gym situation, scheduling my rest days accordingly, and making sure I took time mentally to check out and rest from everything. @d.o.s.e.y KELSEY @inspirednutra KELSEY I have some goals I want to achieve and I’m excited to continue to share them with y’all 🫶 PS. not going to lie when I got on the scale this AM and was EXACTLY the same as I was when I left for a week work trip at first I was mad, I started going through my head what I could have done differently and then I STOPED MYSELF… like biach you drove over 1,000 miles and were not stop working and living out a suitcase and you didn’t gain any weight. I was in such a dark place when I started my health journey. Fighting cancer for the second time. Feeling miserable in my own skin. Trying to find myself after having 3 kids. I started out by pushing play on my workouts in my living room and started with a weight program for the very first time ever after being a big cardio junkie. Then I started working out in about an 8 foot space in my small garage beside the Tahoe. Now I have my own workout room in the basement that I always dreamed of! I have worked out on all our vacations, because it makes me feel good. It’s therapy to me. I have worked out while camping. I’ve worked out at parks while my kids played. I’ve worked out with my workouts streaming on my phone in gyms occasionally. I’ve worked out in different countries. I love that our workouts can literally go anywhere and fit your lifestyle. I love that I can push play from the comfort of my own home, know exactly what to do, no guesswork, meal plans are provided, support from others, extra accountability to show up for myself and inspire others! Working out live at our special events are super cool too, like we got to do during our entire trip! We were handed our pre workout all fixed up for us as we walked in the door. People are hugging, dancing, sharing high fives with strangers. There were some spouses that joined in that had never done a workout before, but were inspired by other spouses to join in. Tears were shed from many that were so darn proud of themselves for how far they’ve already come. The inspiration in that room is something that is hard to put into words. We are all dealing with something, but we are all working to overcome. Then we crushed our workout with our super trainers and walked out being handed our superfoods shake feeling so flippin amazing in our own skin and proud!!! Tell me that doesn’t sound incredible?? I’d absolutely love to chat with you about your goals and see how I can help you feel your best! Life doesn’t just give you what you want. It gives you what you work for. In my 4th battle, facing some incredibly difficult life situations, but still fighting for my health! You are your only **continued in comments

It’s been 16 years and 8 months since diagnosis and just about 14.5 years since I was first given the official NED. It never gets old hearing those words. While I fight through significant side effects daily from treatment all those years ago, I remain grateful. God is good! 🩷🩵💜 #makingcancerhistory #mdanderson #thyca #survivor

NO EVIDENCE OF DISEASE!🦋 #CancerSurvivor From here, I will be on life-long maintenance medication and will continue to have check-ups and tests done—to make sure I stay in remission. “My scars tell a story of when cancer tried to break me and failed.” The scar I have will always be a reminder to take care of myself, love myself, and listen to people who advocate for me—especially my family. Thank you for standing by me, praying for me, guiding me, and hearing me out when I just needed to cry.🩷💙🩵 We kicked cancer’s butt! #ThyroidCancer #ThyCa PS: Always remember to #CheckYourNeck.

September is #ThyroidCancer Awareness Month—DUDE WHERE’S MY THYROID? I’m not going to share my diagnosis and treatment stories on this post cuz I’ve already done that. My scar speaks for itself—please be diligent with your check ups and always have your doctors #CheckYourNeck.🦋 To those who reached out when I was diagnosed (and still continue to do so)—thank you for your prayers, love, concern, and for sharing stories of your own journey with me. Thank you for the inspiration and safe space. Fighting—love y’all!🩷💙🩵 #CancerWarrior #ThyCa #FuckCancer #ThyroidCancerAwarenessMonth

So there’s a lot that’s been going on that I’ve chosen not to talk about until now. This is my way of unloading. 06.13.2023. Goodbye, butterfly.🦋 Had a total thyroidectomy and said “good riddance!” to my thyroid—a 🦋-shaped gland in the neck. 2 small nodules were found in my thyroid in February 2020. Since they were too small to be considered anything at the time, we just had to monitor my thyroid every few months. Eventually, I had to get a biopsy done, which essentially said I needed surgery. This was when I knew things were getting serious.🫣 1. Chilling on the morning of surgery. 2. Post-surgery IV drips—antibiotics, pain killer, sugar water, and sodium chloride (as far as I can remember). My calcium level was constantly being monitored. Was eventually given calcium chewables. 3. An ice collar, my best friend for the next few days after surgery.🤣 Found out that one nodule disappeared—like it wasn’t even seen on histopath AT ALL!🙌🏼 But unfortunately, the other one’s early-stage Papillary Thyroid Cancer. Being told my diagnosis was a big and scary pill to swallow. I still can’t quite wrap my head around it. #FuckCancer Thankfully, my doctors say it’s very curable and that the prognosis is very good!🙏🏼 Have one more phase in my treatment—FIGHTING!🎗️ #ThyroidCancer #ThyCa #CancerWarrior PS: Please #CheckYourNeck!
