Body + Performance🦵 🦵Work by MFAID’24 Tatiana Konstantinidi (@tatiana_knd) POST ABSTRACT REST_aurant challenges the parts of the typical dining performance and invites us to practice empathy for the kitchen and service labor involved in making food. It collapses the spatial distinction between what is considered “Front of House” versus “Back of House”, what is hidden and what is revealed. Situated in front of the Domino Sugar Refinery, it invites diners to participate in different Back of House rituals, not typically included in the “open kitchen’’. Focusing on the sequence of Smell, Taste, Chew, and Rest, diners engage in the parallel processes of production and digestion. They begin smelling produce in the Smell station, where planters are made of composted foods, then physically place their order ticket on the chit rail that acts as a dynamic partition, transitioning to chewing and digesting their food while sitting in a squat position as experienced in the restaurant kitchen. After composting their waste, pre-washing dishes, diners finally join the workers taking a rest at the Cleanse station. Body + Performance🦵 🦵Work by MFAID’24 Sara Helmy (@space2sara) Monster Space: An Exploration of Women-Exclusive Space for the Monstrous-Feminine Monster Space is a renovation of a decades-old Egyptian hair salon, but rather than renovating this space so that it matches its present contemporaries, this is a speculation for a surreal future. One still leaves the space transformed after a bodily experience, but through the lens of the monstrous. The monstrous, or specifically the monstrous-feminine, can be defined in many ways, as I’ve found from film studies, art history, and a look at Egyptian history and urban legend. The best way I can define it though, in the space of the monstrous-feminine, is that it seduces you with the idea of empowerment, but then leaves you with some combination of confusion and nausea because of its excess. There’s always some bodily effect, though - you should feel it in your lungs, your stomach (a quintessential bodily interior for the monstrous to make its way into), you may slowly realize you were squeezing your hands, biting too hard on your jaw, holding your breath. Like I said, though, the monstrous has its positives. Memory + Heritage📃 📃Work by MFAID’24 Fatima Islam (@fatimaislaf) In the age of globalization and increased mobility, more and more people are living in cookie-cutter mixed-use residential towers built for standardization. As a result, city neighborhoods have become homogenous with few opportunities for spontaneous discovery or connection. The experience of ‘coming home’ often feels like moving from sidewalk to hallway to home with minimal interaction, aside from brief exchanges with custodial staff. This thesis responds to this isolated, homogenous landscape by taking the form of a third place—a hybrid, communal, in-between space for both spontaneous dialogue and introspection. Breaking from the building container, this intervention will support the neighborhood as ‘a commons’ that allows the users—residents, office workers, custodial staff—affordances to utilize the space to gather, observe or read, alone or together. Home might not be a specific place but a state of being, a daily choice to be at peace with ourselves. For me, home is built on: The comfort of familiarity. A deep sense of belonging. The warmth of feeling loved. According to Maslow’s hierarchy, the need for love and belonging is fundamental, ranking just after our physical and safety needs. This includes emotional security and financial stability, which are vital for everyone, especially children, who may prioritize belonging over safety in harsh circumstances. Think about former foster youth, navigating life’s uncertainties that mirror Maslow’s layers—from basic needs like food and shelter to the profound longing for a place to belong. Creating spaces that offer empathy and support for these individuals is not just an act of kindness; it’s essential. It’s about recognizing their worth, supporting their growth, and paving the way for a more inclusive future. The “Dear home” project showcases how design can drive social change and empower communities, offering a new perspective on what makes a space truly a home. Care + Environment🌳 Earthing Interiority 🌳Work by MFAID’24 Shreya Dwivedi (@shreya_dee) Globalization has led to a situation where the line separating local and global is increasingly blurred, and spaces that emerge from this, regardless of their geographical origin, look similar and are experienced similarly, without any meaningful connection to their contextual and cultural surroundings, resulting in sameness and placelessness. At a time when it’s fairly easy to move around and find “home” in contexts other than our own, how does one establish a sense of belonging, a relationship, or a connection to a place? This thesis proposes an interior design framework rooted in local contexts to counteract this placelessness. Care + Grief✨ The In Between ✨Work by MFAID’24 Andrea Valet (@andrea_valet06) The In between — In between armed conflict and reconciliation In between trauma and resilience In between fear and hope — In between closeness and openness In between interiority and exteriority _______ Entre patios — En medio del conflicto armado y la reconciliacion En medio de traumas y resiliencias En medio del miedo y la esperanza — En medio de cierres y aperturas En medio de espacios interiores y exteriores _______ The In between Safe heavens of care, reconciliation, and hope -In a wounded Latin American community dealing with armed conflict- My research focuses on how existing forms of resilience and resistance from isolated and wounded Latin American communities inform alternative pedagogical interiors for cultural enrichment, knowledge exchange, care, and enjoyment as a form of collective healing and reconciliation. My site of study is Tumaco, Colombia, a port city in the Nariño Department, by the Pacific Ocean. Tumaco is inhabited mainly by Afro-Colombians and some indigenous people. it has been highly affected by the Colombian armed conflict since the nineties. There have been several cases where the FARC, the armed forces of Colombia, have killed, kidnapped, and tortured the civilians and political authorities of the community. However, their resilient heart and fighting souls are still strong in evolving into a better future. One of the main strategies of resistance and tactic urbanismin the region is the creation of passages and informal patios where people gather to socialize, play, learn, and inhabit as an extension of the house, as outdoor living room, communal kitchen, and resting area. The borderlines between exterior and interior gets blurry in Tumaco, and it is in between those borders where they find spaces of resilience and safety. My design focuses on enhancing and characterizing those in between spaces, such as passages and patios, as well as, use them as connector guides to new yet locally informed modules of education, cultural, social, and economic practices.

Care + Grief✨ Urban Landscape of Grieving: Exploring How Spatial Journeys Intersect with the Grieving Process ✨Work by MFAID’24 Ashima Yadav (@ashima_yadav14) It aims to explore how grief is a bodily as well as a social experience that, when expressed out of our body in the social realm, raises questions like : ❓The experience of bereavement exists beyond mere conceptualization; hence, how does this condition inform the development of typology, and what comprises the experiential form when contextualized in terms of the body? ❓Given that psychological grieving inherently embodies a spatial dimension, how does this dimensionality manifest in the lived experience? ❓How does a place become an integral part of the grieving journey, and what are the unique experiences tied to the spatial aspects of mourning and loss? ❓Crafting a ritual to release the subdued grief of the pandemic era, how might this ritual reshape the landscape? And how does grief manifest in tangible forms when expressed? from individual and bodily needs to a communal space where sharing and expressing stories, both verbally and in tangible form, that can be weaved into the landscape. Glory Apparel is a proud partner of @parsonstextilesmfa Atelier program and this past Fall’23 semester we had the pleasure of hosting Zhemiao (Cas) Kang, where she created a series of knitting panels using our knitting program and machines on site. Cas’ concept: “An intarsia technique is used to knit a window silhouette with a transparent background. This piece explores surrealism and the dream-like quality of liminal spaces and is paired with other mix-media pieces the student created for an art installation. The combination of transparent nylon yarn with the light blue wool gives a soft and dreamy look to the piece.“

Emma’s Concept: “To evoke the feeling of mountains, a textural bubble effect was created using partial knitting intarsia and striping techniques. Depth is created with the natural folds, giving shadow and dimension to the combination of transparent and opaque yarns.”

To whom it may concern in the New York City area, I am an MFA fashion design student at Parsons School of Design and I am designing a project that explores accessibility from a cycling perspective. My current investigation explores the difficulty of one-arm dressing, the protection needed when exercising, etc. I want to get closer to my target group! I am looking to meet with males with one arm or one leg who would be willing to share their perspective on issues with accessibility and movement, specifically within physical activities and sportswear. The Coexistence A series of knitting panels. "The Coexistence" invites contemplation on the harmonious cohabitation of humans and animals within urban environments. Through the delicate fusion of synthetic silk and intricate patterns, the artwork calls for urban planners to incorporate the needs of our feathered counterparts. Amidst the vibrant threads and intricate patterns, a narrative unfolds—a plea for inclusivity in urban planning. The artist draws inspiration from the sprawling urbanization and casts a spotlight on disappearing green spaces.
