Restoration In Progress: Ryan has been steadily working away on the two large leaded panels that we extracted from an apartment building's front doors recently. Ryan has been re-leading that large buckled Clear glass diamond quarry designed panel he removed from a home in Ottawa recently. Using 2% Red 3/8" wide Flat H lead came, he is weaving the strips of lead together to give maximum strength to the panel. 2% Red lead came contains special ingredients that stiffen the came. He will solder this panel together shortly, grout one side then the other, give it a good cleaning and scrubbing, then bring it back and install it back in its rightful place.

Our Field Team went back out on a Balmy morning to put these two big blue and beveled panels back after Ryan did some minor repairs to them. These panels had The Most Unusual features added to them by their original creator, a heavy steel frame plus mega rebar across the stained glass panel to join the steel framed sides together. It's hard to describe as we had never seen such a thing done before. Ryan slipped a couple lengths of rubber shims in along one side to stop the frame from pulling away from the stained glass when it was screwed back into the wooden door frame. Done and done and we got to pet their doggo too!

This old metal framed lampshade came to us missing a panel of White & Amber curved glass in it. Easy Peasy! We made a dam around one of the remaining pieces of curved glass, made a plaster mold, kiln washed it, made a template of the shape, and cut it out of a sheet of @oceansidecompatible 315.1S-F. Then placed that flat glass on top of our mold and fired up our @evenheatkilns StudioPro17 kiln. Except it seems our firing schedule was too aggressive and the glass broke and slumped poorly. So another sheet was cut and this time we reverted back to our usual very conservative firing schedule and it was perfectly slumped! A bit of grinding to remove the excess glass to make it fit in the metal frame and it is off to the second curved glass lampshade that needs two new compound curved pieces of glass. But that is a story for another day....

Our Field Team was at it again yesterday, braving the 1C/33F breezy Canadian spring weather to yank out these two damaged leaded glass front door panels from an apartment complex in Ottawa. This task was made extra fun by the front doors having heavy-duty metal security bars on both sides and metal push bars on the inside that all had to be removed. Once all that was somehow taken off, decades old slot screws do not enjoy being undone, more than a few Olfa blades were expended trying to cut and hack away very old thick silicone which was not releasing these panels without a fight and struggle. Both panels were eventually freed up and taken back to our studio in Bells Corners for a large amount of TLC. Before the Team tried to find an open onramp to the 417, they visited a church nearby that was also in dire need of work due to some unsportsmanlike conduct by someone. But that's another story for another day.

The ten (10) barely slumped panels of 3mm (1/8") thick float glass over the welded metal mold we were sent project was successfully completed and picked up last week. All ten (10) panels were fired just hot enough for the float glass to slump down on the sides just hot enough while also avoiding devitrification and also avoid picking up any texture on the bottom of the glass from the ZYP coated mold. A very fine temperature line found with a few practice firings and decades of experience kiln forming glass.

Ryan and Kevin were out recently to carefully remove five old diamond quarry leaded glass panels from a local home that were in less than ideal shape. Ryan had to surgically cut and pry away various levels of wood trim to gain access to the leaded windows. A further complication was that the four smaller side windows were all still attached to ropes and counterweights in the walls. He had to delicately undo decades old rope knots and then re tie them to ensure the rope and weights did not fall back into the wall and create a whole new world of problems. The arched front door leaded panel was also in bad shape and was removed. However, as it was the sole window panel in the front door, Ryan had to cut a new panel of float glass out on the floor, and also put a sheet of Mylar plastic over it for some extra protection, while repairs are being completed. Stay tuned for the exciting restoration and re-installation in the near future...

Ryan and Kevin went to put this repaired interior leaded glass panel back in place yesterday morning. A combination of enthusiastic young person and sporting equipment lead to multiple breaks in the panel on the left. Ryan expertly repaired them all, matching the very old glass with pieces from our private stash in the back. The panel went back in place very easily, except for this one random nail sticking out. He quickly pulled it and nailed the wooden trim back in place. It went so smoothly they had extra time to play with the family dog who was ecstatic to have people come visit him!

This is just a little post to show people that work as a self employed artist and small business isn’t always about painting, making, designing, drinking tea and listening to music on sunny days in my little shed studio. This afternoon I am busy with making and setting some gel plates to go in the next batch of print kits. All the ingredients are precisely measured and then everything is carefully mixed and melted together before pouring into perfectly level baking trays so that it can set. When cut up, each tray gives me either four A5 gel plates which go into my gel plate printing starter kits, or six 120mm square mini plates which go into the botanical greetings card kits. Don’t get me wrong! I am really happy to be doing this and I love that jobs like this now form part of my day-to-day work 😊. Even after five and a half years, it’s such a welcome change compared to being sat at a Mac, at a desk, in an office, designing stuff to someone else’s tight deadlines. Two large leaded glass panels in distress came to us in wooden frames that were also in distress. Ryan removed both panels from the frames, made a rubbing of the design, removed all the glass from the old lead came for recycling, and then made two stacks of all the remaining glass pieces on the pattern. There were a lot of broken and missing pieces that he will have to match and cut before starting to reassemble. Stay tuned for more progress and the completed panels. He should have them both done in time for Elevensies tomorrow morning?

A couple of recent, current, and future reads. If you haven’t read The Serpent and the Wings of the Night yet, you should! It’s by far one of the best and most refreshing fantasies that I’ve read in a while! I’m still slogging through the third Crescent City. I still really love SJM and her worlds and (most of) her characters, but I also think her latest books could use some editing. You can read 200 pages, and nothing much happens. So I’ve been picking this one up, reading a couple of chapters and then putting it down. I am liking it. It’s just slow going for me. And, after a three month pause, I have returned to Book of the Month. My February box came in on Friday, and I really want to start one of these books today. So this metal plate arrived in the mail in three barely padded envelopes for us. No note, no name. Then Kevin said oh, somebody did call about doing an extremely specific slump job awhile ago, maybe that is it? An email came in shortly after, explaining everything, so off we went. The stainless steel mold was first pre fired to darken it and make sure it stayed together. Then it was sprayed with ZYP Boron Nitrate release agent. A piece of 8 7/8" by 13 7/8" 3mm Float was was cut and cleaned, and placed on the center of the mold. The issue was that the client required absolutely zero texture on the underside of the glass from the mold. So a very land slow firing schedule was used. It worked perfectly the first time, but a secondary issue appeared, as feared. The float glass is more prone to devitrification and the first piece of glass did show just enough devit to need a solution. A special low maturing glaze was painted on top of a second sheet of glass, allowed to dry, and we will see if it worked on Tuesday morning when we get back into the studio....

Ryan needed to do some dramatic open-panel surgery on this older leaded window due to extensive cracks from......reasons. He expertly dismantled the panel to allow for easy access to replace all of the broken pieces of glass. All of the older glass was luckily matched almost exactly. He put it all back together with some solder and grout, and the patient made a full recovery and will be put back into place later this month.
