While at @phl_airport, Lauren, our Social Media and Marketing Manager, observed captivating artwork in Terminal E. Upon closer examination, she realized that the entire creation was crafted solely from discarded single-use plastic. 🎨 This amazing creation, by @eurhi.jones, is entitled "Storm Over the Atlantic," from her ongoing "Overflow" series. 🌊 This captivating series is exclusively crafted from discarded single-use plastic collected by Jones's family, friends, @weaversway, and @rabbit_recycling. ♻️ By abstaining from new materials, Jones aims to minimize her carbon footprint and contribute to a greener planet. 🌍 From the artist herself: "In the future, I hope that this art material becomes obsolete. In 2022, at the United Nations, 175 nations agree to develop a legally binding agreement on plastic pollution by 2024, prompting a major step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions from plastic production, use and disposal. Commissioned by the Philadelphia International Airport “Up, Up, and Way” is a painting celebrating a shared sense of greeting, whether coming or going. It is a festive, spirited sense of togetherness expressed as the commotion I find familiar with people waiting, meeting, and saying hello. As an artist, my exaltation is in exhibiting my history as an Asian woman between China and the US, wherein I see my identity as a situational idea. My racial group shapes me while I exist within others, constantly modified by the shared spatial relations I am subject to encountering. In support of these ideas, this painting is supplemented with an augmented reality experience, bridging the physical space of the airport with the painterly world. Together, the painting and the AR immersion focus on the feeling that being in the air captures. On Friday, I was invited back to perform at the art cart curated by @phlairportart inside the Philadelphia International Airport. It’s been a pretty incredible experience over the last year, seeing how poetry can make an impact even in a liminal space like an airport. I realized this was my 5th time performing there and I’ve seen and heard so many different stories along the way. This time poetry was a tool to brighten people’s days. The planets in retrograde was obvious from the first poem, when a woman stepped up and announced she was having the worst week. And to top it off, her flight was delayed by a whole day. She wanted a poem about “Wallowing In The Misery” and I chose to write about slowing down and making time to enjoy the hurdles. She already was smiling about the situation. I think she was grateful to have a poem that echoed her positive attitude. I also wrote for flight crew for the first time. I always think about where my poems will be traveling after I write them, but these poems specifically are crisscrossing the sky even now. A flight attendant told me she was going to recite my poem over the announcements after her passengers had boarded. How crazy! Poetry being delivered while the plane makes its way down the runway. A chance for those words to literally soar. I finished up my shift writing a poem for an employee at the food court who is an aspiring rapper. I told him to “Write on!” and keep chasing his inspirations. Cause a happy heart is a healthy heart. And life gets more real the longer you pursue a dream. I have to say once again, I am so grateful to Leah, Ahmed, and the other curators at PHL. They give a chance for these really beautiful interactions to manifest. It really is an honor to be one of the many creative ambassadors for our city in this very small and subtle way. It’s totally rad that visitors to Philly get a taste of the arts and culture that is so prevalent here from the moment they step off a plane. I’ll soon be traveling again, myself. Maybe if I’m lucky I’ll catch up to one of these poems I wrote there last week.

In May, I was invited to write poems at @phl_airport to celebrate 25 years of public art at the airport. Over the years @phlairportart has curated some incredible installations and performances. I love how they’ve cultivated an accessible space for the general public to enjoy local artists. At the same time it is exciting to think how these artists are connected to a world audience that might not usually traffic an art gallery. It’s been a special honor to be in the mix, writing poems for travelers as they pass through Philadelphia. Personally, it’s such a delight to witness how poetry has an impact in all these different avenues. I find there is always a need for a poem whether I am set up in a public park, at a music festival, featured at the airport, or spotlighted in the art museum. Poetry is always in demand. What a beautiful reflection of humanity that we still look to a poem to make sense of our experience. Connecting us deeper to the beat of the heart. Channeling the bards of old, to expand tomorrow’s horizons.
