I found myself promising a client tulips next spring yesterday, only to remember I still had to plant them! I was holding off as the weather has been so mild, and if the soil isn't cold enough they can suffer from tulip fire, rendering them, and the soil, ruined. But we have finally had a killing frost so I'm now killing my fingers by digging them in! Picking yesterday for todays flowers, I made a real effort to capture some of the softer colours and almost keep the feeling of Autumn at bay. I know someone who will really enjoy these. I have to say, I went a bit barmy with all the brights, coppers , bronze and salmon! The polytunnel Dahlias, have been going a long time and had a severe cut back to be reinvigorated and at their best for a late September wedding. A few later sown flowers to go in a tunnel too now. There is an Autumnal nip in the air this morning. Limited Friday Cottage and private bouquets going out this morning. DiY wedding flowers yesterday,bouquets mid week, a visit later to talk weddings. It can feel like getting over one hurdle to the next sometimes, when really it’s about enjoying the now. The wonderful aroma of Fennel flowers, reminds me of aniseed ball sweets, I used to love as a child, and flowers don’t break your teeth! I took this yesterday to celebrate some colour, right now, as it can be so fleeting this time of year. In truth I’m desperate to get landscapes sorted, plants in and sort for next year, there’s a lot to sort out here now. Diy flowers/self arrangement/bucket shares. I’m sure many people,possibly think, you just go outside, snip some flowers and just hand them over as a cheap option. This couldn’t be further from the truth. To get best value and results, we always ask the purpose of the flowers. Are they for churns, tables, installations, bouquets , a christening, private function or designer bucket for painters or flower lovers etc. if there is a colour palette. You don’t just get whatever is available at the time. We grow a lot of seasonal choice. Then there’s number crunching. Before any flowers can be picked,all the buckets , vessels etc have to be scrupulously cleaned so there is no bacteria to the detriment of the stems. We are off grid, so quite the palaver, filling buckets with water from rain water catchment tanks. Flowers need to be cut into water with the finest sharpest snips so as not to crush the stems. Dahlia stems are cut under water, in case of air blocks. Flowers picked at the right stage of development for purpose. Woody stems and some flowers may need to be cut earlier, some flowers conditioned a certain way, or they will just flop and look half dead, which they will be!Everything carried back to the sheds to be kept in shade for a minimum of 24 hours to hydrate, ready to be at their best for use. Easy! We will then arrange for drop off and exchange of flowers into your own buckets. There will be a helpful list of dos and donts. When you put this much effort into sowing,growing, picking and conditioning, we want them at their best for you once handed over. It’s then your responsibility to keep them looking perfect for your occasion. Now is the time of some of my seasonal favourites, that quietly pop up and don’t shout. The snowberry, Japanese anemones and weathered roses and Hypericums. The season is changing. I usually stop for the season to clear for the next the middle of October, only eight weeks away! Where has this season gone! It started with so many rabbit problems and now there are none. Flowers grew, plants thrown on compost due to lack of time, great successes in the tunnels. Usual winners and losers somewhere. Now the Dahlias, Solidago and more are in charge and then I will be very happy to chop the lot down! Move on to growing for next year! The Ranunculas and anemones will be started soon, seeds and more, a seasonal continuation. I was very grateful for @denise_mccausland s help yesterday ( in photos),as my foots still wonky and walking like a pirate! It was good to pick a lot of different flowers and foliage in all sorts of hidden areas, for Rachel @theroseshed I have always grown for my own floristry, which means I grow what I particularly love, is slightly different and know works. Living where we do growing to be self sufficient in plants and flowers has always been important, to be able to just get the flower snips out and just get what I want in season,working with nature, not against it has been essential.This means I am aware of flower uses and best purpose. We only offer to florists as and when we can, but happy to do so along with other things we do. Those “things” seem to be constantly changing as life changes. I’m getting a bit mesmerised with petal shapes picking Dahlias. A lot of flowers almost seem engineered! I have to clear some sheds and set up for a pre wedding visit Sunday, which I’m looking forward to, it will be fun.Thankfully, they know me!This basically means no one can trip over everything and there’s a lot of flowers in the sheds to explain number crunching, colours,types, shapes, costs and how to s on the day. Will pick some samples I can dry later. It’s hard for people to understand how many flowers and foliage they may need until it’s easily clear when put right in front of you. They know what they are doing, friends helping friends, they love and understand flowers and growing some themselves. Just picked! The photos look wonderful and romantic. The reality is I’ve had to wander to a really wet area of the garden, it’s drizzling hard, lots of stingers, you get the picture. The Dahlias that are more special than others, get protected in a polytunnel across wet grass paths. As a shortcut I just have to climb over a rabbit proof fence. When you see flowers together, it’s all worth it to contribute in a small way with something local and unique to a couples special day. The liatris are in full swing now. For me, they are a bit like courgettes, I can't wait for the first to flower - but then I wonder if I like them. Then I see this, and I'm reminded why I grow them (unlike courgettes!). They are commonly known as blazing star, or gayfeather, and are reminiscent of a bottle brush. Unusually, they flower from the top downwards. Pollinators love them. NEW BLOG POST | RHS Flower School x Flowers from the Farm | RHS Hampton 2023 At this year’s RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival, @The-RHS has collaborated again with @flowersfromthefarm (FFTF) to stage the RHS Flower School. The FFTF members have beautifully decorated the marquee, both inside and out! They’ve not only used locally-grown, seasonal, sustainable cut flowers and dried flowers, but they’ve also created a mini flower farm using plants in front of the marquee. This is why I always need advance notice when ordering flowers. British Flowers Week 2023 has begun! Five stunning floral installations have been created to celebrate. And you can see them all at the @GardenMuseum in London from today until Monday. I was honoured to be commissioned by the Museum to take photographs yesterday of all the designs. This is one of my images of a beautiful botanical creation by Nari from @yinari__. I'll be featuring more images online over the next few days and look out on Sunday on my YouTube channel for a video featuring all the installations. You can visit the Garden Museum up to and including Monday from 10am-5pm to see and walk through the installations. There's late night opening tomorrow. So very happy that spring is here! I may have treated myself to a 'Spring Fresh from the Farm Box' from the @therealflowerco last week. 😉 These and some other beautiful seasonal blooms will be featured in this coming Wednesday's YouTube video.
