Another dry area has been located ... planted out blue cornflowers, white cornflowers, white corncockle, pink corncockle and some white umbellifers, daucus and orlaya (think posh cow parsley type things). Covered with fine mesh to keep those munching critters off . In the polytunnel (1st pic) I've spread a bag of waste seed compost saved from the pricking out/potting on process to create a nice bed for two types of ornamental cress . And another few trays of seeds sown. #MarchMeetTheMaker Day 29 ‘Vision’ I have long had a vision / dream of what ultimately I wanted this small business of mine to be - but it has morphed and evolved over the last six years in different ways and different directions to what I had imagined - partly due to Covid and having to rapidly rethink my plan in order to survive. But today, now, I am far closer to the vision that I had - a sustainable floristry business that also grows its own seasonal flowers to use in my work but potentially to sell to other florists . This has been work in progress for several years. A commercially viable ‘cutting patch’ has its challenges - the weather; the location; the quality of the soil; poor seed germination ; mice; rabbits; hares etc etc. I am so lucky I now have a piece of land right outside the house - there will still be challenges - the main one being rabbits but I am determined not to be defeated by them! but it will be so much easier to manage having it on the doorstep. From now until mid-summer is my favourite season as a grower, the fast succession of flowers that come and go in the blink of an eye. I look forward to each one, there's a comfort in their arrival but also a sense of melancholy, as I know that they will soon be gone for another year. These precious magnolia blooms are from a tree that was a gift for my 30th birthday, and was dug up and unceremoniously moved from London to Ireland 22 years ago. It always flowers on or around my birthday, and rarely escapes a battering from the rain. The cherry is 'Shirotae' planted when my first son was born. As the winter days rock back and forth between grim and glorious, I'm coming out of hibernation to work outside as often as I can - the winter sunshine days and dramatic sunsets certainly make up for the rain, hail and windy ones. Meanwhile, gorgeous hellebores are quietly bridging the gap till the warmer days, known as they are as Christmas roses or Lenten roses. Their subtle beauty never fails to make my heart skip a beat. In my garden, you can find all shades from lime and apple green, ivory and white, through pink and purple to near-black; single and double; sometimes speckled, sometimes pure; and the design of their stamens is nothing short of incredible. When growing, they can hide their true beauty by nodding their heads, but I sometimes float some in a bowl of water or pick stems for a vase set on top of a mirror. And there are a few tricks to making sure they fare well once cut: sear the lower end of the stems in boiling water for 30 seconds, then run a clean knife carefully down the lower length of the stem so that they can drink as much water as possible. Pick them when they are a bit older and the seed pods are beginning to set because then the stems will be woodier and stronger. The first freshly gathered bouquets and posies of the 2024 season have gone out from orders this week ... earlier than last year as I recall. The tulips are starting to pop through the beds. It won’t be long until spring is upon us! I never used to be a fan of tulips but then I started growing my own for cutting and my mind was quickly changed! They’re now one of my favourite cut flowers. They might not be the most cost effective flower for me as a grower but they bring me so much joy. And British tulips are something else! They’re bigger, brighter and last so much longer than anything you find in the supermarket. Size just don’t matter when it comes to #dahliatubers. #soulmandahlia makes huge tubers. #bonadoridahlia makes tiny. But they are firm, and all have the magical factors for #blooms. Body. Neck. Eye on part of the crown. These both survived experiment 1:: placing the tubers in tightly closed paper bags! Autumn bulb season 🌷 🌼 Alongside building compost bins, we’ve been building bulb boxes out of old shipping pallets. A complete experiment to see whether the bulbs survive the winter, we’ve made a variety of shapes (this one is unnecessarily tall!). We lined the boxes with old manure bags, punched holes in them for drainage, then gravel, then compost, then bulbs (these are some delicious pink tulips called ‘Queen Jewel’ 🌷), then more soil and old leaves for the fun of it (I know). The benefit of boxes like these are that the bulbs and their flowers don’t take up precious bed space, leaving the beds available for germinating summer flower crops in spring! Maybe it’s just me but ever wondered how to grow ranunculus? Or are you more like “What the flip is ranunculus?”? 🌸 Ranunculus is a spring time favourite flower for many - tight swirls of soft delicate petals in a variety of gorgeous colours, who could ask for more? They are the long distant cousins of buttercups would you believe! They grow from funny little fingerlike corms and normally start flowering late spring to early summer, they can flower for 6 weeks! To grow just soak the corms for a few hours in water and chuck them in the ground fingers down BUT you can also get flowers earlier by pre sprouting them in your greenhouse, poly tunnel, cold frame or kitchen, garage etc. Back in very early October, I put about 200 of the weird corms on soil spiky ends down in trays, covered them with more soil, gave them a spritz to moisten the soil, and voila! Within 2 weeks little green sproutlings began to emerge 🌱 I planted them in the ground this week, yes a bit late, really they should go in soon after sprouting but hopefully they will survive whatever winter throws at them and we’ll see the results in early to mid spring! If you also plant some unsprouted corms at the same time, you can get a longer spread of ranunculus in bloom! Save this post to start your “how to grow flowers…” album! Did you know? 🌻🌻🌻🌻 Sunflowers move throughout the day in response to the movement of the sun from east to west. Like humans, they are following their circadian rhythm, and it is essential for them to grow big and strong. Turns out sunflowers are not the only flowers that do this! So the amount of sunlight flowers get is pretty crucial. Some flowers need loads, some less so. The design of beds in the walled garden hopefully gives space for both sun worshippers and shade lovers. We started digging in August this year and are incorporating a mixture of no dig beds, with and without green manure as a bit of an experiment! The only problem with all these beds is well, someone has to dig them! A summer of dahlias ...didn't think I was a particularly red, yellow or orange person until I discovered dahlias, and just look at the exquisite design of each one! Who could resist? Hands up if you found some in your bouquet from the HOMEstead GROWN garden this year 😊. Some were munched to shreds before they could flower, but many others flowered their socks off once the summer cheered up. “Moving to the country, gonna eat me a lot of peaches…” well sort of. You know it's August when you can hear the occasional pistol crack of a sweet pea seedpod exploding in the polytunnel . Here are some I saved before they got dispersed. 'Right foliage right place. Foliage is so versatile, so work backwards from how you’d like to use it to decide what to grow. For small vase arrangements, scented pelargoniums work beautifully. For smaller bouquets, pittosporums will be useful. For bouquets year round, hebe ‘Marilyn Monroe’ or ‘Blue Gem’ can provide the structure you need, as will privet (Ligustrum), Japanese spiraea, Korean lilac (Syringa meyeri ‘Palibin’) and myrtle (Myrtus).' ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is an extract from the piece in Bloom Magazine this month about me and my foliage growing. 🌿 G R O W • W I L D 🌿 I’ve been missing in action from the grid recently, sorry folks. I’ve had a busy old few weeks enjoying the spoils of summer and lots of milestone birthday shenanigans…💫💫💫 The late sunshine means the flowers are still blooming at the plot keeping the bees busy while I prep and plan autumn and beyond! I’ve been sowing seeds into little drills and mulching all my established plants - there’s always so many jobs to be getting on with even with a small plot. It makes me very happy to see little dots of green poking up through the soil - I just hope they don’t get confused in the warm weather… I’m tackling the garden jobs next, I can’t put it off any longer! Still not sure if I like it, but it’s my first one, only planted last autumn and it’s not staying here, it’s a koko loko although the rosé growers will know that, there’s so much different between varieties and even the same variety depending on how and where they are grown, this colour or similar varieties seem to be everywhere that’s one of the reasons why I got it, to be a bit more fashionable 😂 note to self don’t do that anymore 🤣 I will use it in my floral work just not this year it needs to grow stronger roots and become more established, how many of you like it, show of hands please, Sarah

A late booking for an August micro wedding. The bridal party of mother, daughter, small granddaughter would be wearing variations on red, white and blue. That is a colour scheme I usually avoid in flowers, largely because I'm not a fan of the brighter red tones but will allow the deeper velvety reds . To make these bouquets not look like a slightly tacky plastic union jack I went for plenty of white, with a sophisticated deeper red dahlia and a few shades of blue and lilac-mauve. As always the dangling amaranthus has the last word . Then I got my fiddly fingers flexed to make 14 buttonholes and floralise a hair slide the bride had sent me . Just picked! The photos look wonderful and romantic. The reality is I’ve had to wander to a really wet area of the garden, it’s drizzling hard, lots of stingers, you get the picture. The Dahlias that are more special than others, get protected in a polytunnel across wet grass paths. As a shortcut I just have to climb over a rabbit proof fence. When you see flowers together, it’s all worth it to contribute in a small way with something local and unique to a couples special day. Happy Retirement! I did enjoy this one - its huge (wasn’t meant to be but I got carried away and had lots of flowers to play with)! The brief was rustic/wild and my customer was Scottish so had to throw a few thistles in there didn’t I! - silver eryngium newly grown this year, a gorgeous blue alpinum steal from the parents-in-law, and a milk thistle that has popped up on my plot this year (Hello Mum! 😉). The time of year when my thoughts turn to cutting things for drying and using during the less warm & sunny days . These are flax seedheads grown from ordinary flax/linseed that you can buy in a food type shop. I got mine from @food_circle_york [thanks Joe] . You may have seen a farm field of shimmering blue amongst the yellow and green crops. Well that's flax. The delightful but short-lived flowers soon give way to these bulbous seeds. When the heat is on, there is nothing more cooling than a white and green wedding except for the florist who had a peony and fridge disaster 😭 Fellow flower farmer @theflowerhutatbarnowlcottage jumped to the rescue with campanula, extra sweet peas and jasmine, so all was well and all flowers were grown in Lincolnshire, within 20 miles of the venue. I just needed to lie down in a dark room afterwards😉 before getting ready to do the same again next week. Huge congratulations to C&G. I hope you had a wonderful day. It's turned out to be a bumper year for these gorgeous blooms in the garden, also for spires of lupins, and the fruit espaliers looks more promising than ever before. So grateful for the refreshing rain just now, after the many beautifully sunny days. Gertrud Jekyll is my current favourite vibrant pink climbing rose, and Queen of Sweden is an exquisite peach-turning-shell-pink rose with straight stems and no thorns, perfect for bouquets and vases. A further 600 ish plantlets in the ground today. More cornflowers, corncockles and larkspurs, with bells of ireland, gomphrena, annual phlox and some dahlias grown from seed . Just after this picture I covered them all with the fine mesh there to keep the bad bad bunny rabbit(s) from digging up and or nibbling . They'll be better off planted than kept in their small modules over the hot weekend ahead. Despite the lack of rain, the ground isn't completely dry under the surface so they'll be able to stretch their roots out and find some moisture instead of becoming water stressed in hot plastic trays. The mesh provides a bit of protection from direct sunlight as well . As always, there is precisely NO time to be sad that the wonderful tulip season is coming to an end when, in May, the garden explodes into life in jungle-like proportions. That includes the weeds and encroaching wild areas, but I refuse to tear my hair out about that now that I realise the huge importance of gardening with nature instead of trying to tame it and produce a show-garden. It was never going to happen anyway 😄. How great not to feel the pressure and just enjoy the buttercups, and Orange-tip butterflies even on the nettles. So the May and early June bouquets and vases have been bursting with my favourite colours, which turn out to be favourites with all the happy customers too. Win-win. Delighted to have grown some flowers for the first time with success this year - velvety anemones, sweet rocket as tall as me and smelling amazing; and several more allium varieties and ranunculus colours than last year. You can see me sporting my fab new waxed, beautifully hand-sewn apron made by Herefordshire @fieldandfound which I couldn't resist last weekend at the Hay Literary Festival.
