An ill wind…… Having spent much time last year checking wind speeds to see if urns/bowls might be damaged by transportation to other corners, and having this year already done a couple of classes in potentially catastrophic weather I found myself a safe space. Here. Within centimetres of the bench on which they have been made. No damage, no heavy lifting and shifting, and, at around 3.30pm each day, a pleasing bit of side light that might even reflect on the podium. Further brighter ideas have arisen. And it was a good wind that blew me into the local antiques centre the other day en route to collect the car from major surgery. A decent deal for cash on two small urns. Sta per finire questo mese di aprile ‘pazzerello’ che ci ha portato prima temperature decisamente estive e poi invernali. Ha confuso noi ma soprattutto le piante che hanno in qualche caso anticipato le fioriture di quasi un mese e poi con il ritorno del freddo si sono bloccate. Sta per arrivare maggio e con lui spero un po’ di normalità. Le rose, regine di maggio, stanno aspettando che le temperature si normalizzino per dare il meglio di sé e meravigliarci con le loro fioriture spettacolari. Nei giardini stanno sbocciando mughetti, peonie, azalee, iris, filadelfo e viburno palla di neve… Maggio è il mese delle fioriture spettacolari! My first recollections of the smell of spirea elude me, yet they remind me very clearly of home. Are you familiar with these beautiful plants? My family has always called them wedding veil, as opposed to the more commonly used bridal veil. They thrive in the sun, but I’ve known them to be quite happy with a bit of shade too. Growing up, these shrubs adorned both sides of the most commonly used entrance to my childhood home, one of the many treasure gardens that I watched my mother bring alive. I make it an annual tradition to bring these beauties inside. We inherited a few, and planted a few more at the entrance to our property as well. Endlich wieder Sonnenschein! Nach gefühlt niemals enden wollenden kalten Tagen, an denen ich unzählige Male frostempfindliche Pflanzen, vorgezogene Dahlien und frisch gekeimte Sämlinge erst rein und dann wieder rausgetragen habe. Wer braucht da noch eine Mitgliedschaft im Fitnessstudio? Gartenarbeit mit Trainingseffekt und klar - ab und zu auch Rückenschmerzen. Aber was tut man nicht alles für seine mühsam ausgesäten Schätze? All die Arbeit von einer einzigen frostigen Nacht zunichte gemacht? Dann doch lieber Muskelkater … Dieses Bild habe ich am 8. April aufgenommen. Inzwischen haben sich fast alle Tulpen verabschiedet, auch wenn das kalte Wetter der letzten Tage ihrem Verblühen noch einmal Aufschub gewährt hat. (Il bòcolo) A Venezia, il 25 aprile, giorno che coincide con la Liberazione e dedicato a San Marco, il patrono della città, gli uomini usano regalare alle donne di famiglia, specialmente fidanzate e mogli, un bocciolo di rosa rossa, chiamato "bòcolo" in dialetto. Si narra che questa tradizione abbia origini leggendarie. In tempi antichi, c'era una giovane di nome Maria, figlia del tribuno Angelo Partecipazio, diventato poi Doge, che si innamorò follemente di Tancredi, un valoroso trovatore, un poeta. Il loro amore era contrastato dal padre di Maria, che non approvava la loro unione. Maria chiese a Tancredi di guerreggiare contro gli Arabi in Spagna con l'esercito di Carlo Magno, sperando che il padre accettasse il loro amore se Tancredi avesse ottenuto gloria in battaglia. Tancredi partì e divenne famoso per il suo coraggio. Un giorno, dei cavalieri Franchi guidati da quell'Orlando reso noto dall'Ariosto, giunsero a Venezia per annunciare a Maria la morte di Tancredi. Tancredi era caduto a Roncisvalle, sopra un rosaio, e prima di morire aveva colto un fiore bianco, chiedendo a Orlando di portarlo a Maria. La fanciulla, sconvolta dal dolore, ricevette il fiore reso rosso dal sangue dell'amato. Morì il giorno successivo, il giorno di San Marco. Da allora, il bocciolo di rosa rossa, simbolo dell'amore pronto a sbocciare, viene donato alle donne in questo giorno speciale.
