“Whenever you are creating beauty around you, you are restoring your own soul.” - Alice Walker. The gathering for this bouquet worked its magic on me, time wandering the garden choosing which snippets to add to the dahlias. My way of doing this starts with picking just a single stem of each flower that could work for the palette and mood, and then from that selection, editing them down to which ones are perfection together. I’m looking at colours, forms, movement and textures, and how they relate to each other before deciding on my final choices. Then I go back to the garden and pick the extra stems I need. It might sound complicated, but often this same process is used while picking into a bucket at the grower. It’s a way to create a perfect palette and explore ideas, and I find it works for me. Maybe this might seem obvious if you’re already doing it, but I thought I’d mention it as when guests come they do often say how helpful it was to learn this. The humble violet- such a beautiful native wildflower! I found this tiny vase on a bric-a-brac stall, and it’s absolutely the best £1 I’ve ever spent! It’s Devonshire ‘mottoware’ pottery, a lovely little thing- especially when filled with one of my favourite wildflowers! Such a beautiful, gentle fragrance, and I love the leaves almost as much as those graceful, dainty little flowers. The Ancient Greeks associated violets with fertility and romance, and they feature throughout Greek mythology, whilst using the Victorian Language of Flowers, a gift of violets would be translated as a delicate declaration of love and affection. I’m working my way through Noel Kingsbury’s book ‘The Story of Flowers’, lapping up little details like this. Apparently the flowers were over-harvested, then came agricultural intensification…and now the plant is rare in England. Here in Victoria, British Columbia, the Camas is in full bloom. The humble daffodil, getting the moment to shine she deserves! Daffodils get an incredibly bad rap that is completely undeserved, I believe. The vast majority of people only think of the chunky, bright yellow, maybe a bit brash, varieties favoured by many council plantings (personally I love those too though)- but the reality is that narcissi (their more glamorous Latin name) are incredibly varied! They absolutely can be mixed in a vase with other flowers too, despite the old wive’s tale that their sap kills everything. Whilst it is poisonous, letting them sit in cool water for at least an hour lets most of the sap drain out, then they’re ready to be arranged with other flowers in fresh water! The aim of this arrangement was to showcase as many different forms of narcissi as possible, in celebration of their beauty, mixed simply with the incredible fresh green hedgerow foliage, clematis armandii, blackthorn blossom, cowslips and a special mention to those incredible, beautifully veined Lords and Ladies leaves! Here there are double, multi-headed, heavily perfumed, flat-faced, large trumpeted and paperwhite varieties of narcissi, in all the shades of cream, white, yellow and orange. For anyone getting married in the spring, what could be better than fragranced narcissi in your wedding flowers that will forever evoke beautiful memories of your special day! Every variety here was cut from the beautiful @blackpigorchards where narcissi are under planted beneath the fruit trees in swathes- it’s truly a sight to behold! As the daffodil season draws to an end, here’s to appreciating one of our most beautiful native flowers, in all her natural and cultivated beauty! ✨✨

The alchemy of colour. Colour is what makes arranging flowers so incredibly fun and creative. Here, a twist on a complementary colour palette - yellow and purple - which sit opposite one another on the colour wheel. The twist being the introduction of ginger and lime. On the one hand these make the whole combination more muted and nuanced, but on the other they enliven it and create a mouth-wateringly delicious concoction from the spring garden. As all of my spring favourites come into flower, a frenzy of seed sowing commences for the next batch of crops for the garden and allotment, this year a few more flowers. At this time of year, nothing seems impossible on the sowing front. I dream of an abundance of everything. Colourful flowers, unusual salad crops, baskets of sweetcorn and buckets of fruit. The reality may be different, but the hope for the coming season as gardeners is a good one! The greenhouse is now at capacity, but I’m sure I will squeeze in some more. Vergissmeinnicht sind schon seit Jahrzehnten im Garten und säen sich Jahr für Jahr verlässlich selbst aus. Die Hasenglöckchen haben erst vor ein paar Jahren ihren Weg in den Garten gefunden und tauchen seitdem an immer anderen Stellen neu auf. Spring flowers are popping out all over. Here are an early rhododendron (name unknown), woodland phlox, Jacob’s ladder (two varieties), Virginia bluebells, a bearded iris, the first pink columbine, and fresh fern leaves and fiddleheads. With our construction project we lost some plants (no foxgloves, for instance, the young seedlings got buried in the excavation), but others proved remarkably resilient, coming back after being dug up and basically pushed to the side. We’re just now trying to reconstruct some of the plantings ourselves in a small way with transplanting from other spots in the yard. No budget left for major landscaping!
