Not allotment related….. Off down there in a min. I’ve got a sickly alocasia (thinking it’s overwatering) so hoofed her out to see what’s going on, healthy roots so not overly concerned…but did find 5 corms so I’ve popped them in some perlite to start them off🤞 Can someone answer me this? Why do growers/nurseries/or??? put mesh cages around the root balls? I discovered her root ball was encased in what feels like nylon mesh (see last pic) so I’ve removed it with the hope she’ll be a bit happier. Tritonia deusta has flowers or pure orange with a tiny, yellow star in the very centre (hardly noticeable unless you look for it). Most flowers have a small, deep purple-black, heart-shaped, mark on three of the petals. The anthers are small but navy blue and make a perfect contrast to the vivid orange of the flowers. This makes a real burst of colour. Full sun is best. Like all Tritonia, the foliage is not likely to survive prolonged periods of freezing or frosting, though it will take transient coldness and light frosts. Ｅｘｐｅｒｉｍｅｎｔｓ . ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ I started experimenting with Alocasias and semi-hydro about 6 months ago. While I know that Alocasias love semi-hydro, the struggle for me was (and still is) transferring them from soil to semi-hydro. I've tried many methods, including leaving them in water to grow water roots first. I've tried trimming the soil roots, or leaving them on, but whatever I tried, I didn't have much success. Throughout the past half year I lost pretty much every single one of my Alocasias. 💔 But even those that were thriving in semi-hydro died super quickly after repotting into a bigger pot because they were rootbound. Just rotted away within a few weeks. The same thing happened with their corms / rhizomes. Everything rotted away, no matter which medium or method I've tried. Even with moss, which previously had a 100% success rate for my corms, suddenly no longer worked. I still don't know why. 🤔 For now, I have decided to keep adult Alocasias in soil and that seems to be working for me. And now I'm finally ready to try propagating corms again. I got some corms from more common Alocasias so it doesn't hurt as much if they don't make it. 😅 This time I'm trying all the different substrates at once to see what works best (if it does at all ☠️😂) and to see what I may be doing wrong. 2 different corms in almost each pot. I found this gorgeous Alocasia at a big box store a couple weeks ago. She has been doing well in her new home but I wanted to get her out of that big box store soil. I had never repotted an Alocasia before so I was a bit nervous but wow!! I discover that I had two plants, so l put the larger one in my soil mix and I’m going to test the smaller one in leca which I’ve never used before. I rinsed the leca off really well and now it’s soaking for a few hours before I put fresh water in and the plant. So exciting to see how it goes! Even better than that though is that I found 10 corms!! I have never done anything like this before though so any tips you might have would be greatly appreciated. The runt of the litter 💚🌱 This tiny leaf belongs to the last of my alocasia corms (from my first set) to grow roots and make her way from corm elementary (the open water bowl) to corm middle school (the shot glasses). However, though she was the last to graduate, she made sure not to get left behind! I’m literally 10 bags of #mulch away from being done w/this #surprisegarden bed! This morning I cut & treated #accursednandina and pulled weeds as I could. Then I spread out cardboard I had left from the other bed. There are a couple of #surprise #indianhawthorn peeking out, I thought they were all ⚰️ after the 2020 (or was it ‘21?) freeze, and I thought I’d dug them all up. Hey, not my fave, but hey: free plants! One is too close to the edging but I’m not messing with it. I’ve planted some white & green #caladiums #corms but I’m not sure they’re viable.
