🥁 Revealing the new vibe of my main setup 🥁 Now I couldn't let the second setup outshine the main setup now could I? You may have noticed I have been using my second setup a lot more than my main. I adore my new second setup but it's because I have had the main setup with no furniture as I switched up the vibe for the past few weeks. My past vibe was beautiful and I loved it but it was definitely not setup properly for audio. I designed it before I started collecting and it was time to convert it to a proper record room. Luckily when I redid the library, my parents had some chairs they no longer needed. They matched the earthy boho vibe the room was starting to go toward with this setup. With the additions of some plants and a quick re-arrange and voila... A gorgeous and functional setup! Can't wait to relax and listen to so many records in here now again, it's been too long. Recently I got another copy of Bongo Fury by Frank Zappa and the Mothers with Captain Beefheart. I had a copy previously, but it was a beater copy that played, was noisy, and full of pops and cracks. I ended up parting with it and only recently finally got another one. This album features both live and studio material with the live stuff recorded in May of 1975 in Austin, Texas, and the studio material recorded during the sessions for One Size Fits All. The album came about after Beefheart joined Zappa and The Mothers on the 1975 Bongo Fury tour. At the time, contractual obligations left Beefheart unable to tour or record on his own. Zappa and Beefheart's friendship soured on the tour to the point that they refused to talk to one another. Zappa became irritated by Beefheart's constant drawing while on tour. Beefheart would often draw on stage, and his sketchbooks were full of caricatures of Zappa, which Zappa didn't find amusing. Musically, their styles also clashed, with Beefheart's primitive style contrasting sharply with Zappa's complex compositions. It ended up as the only tour the two ever embarked on together. On the album, Captain Beefheart performs lead vocals and harmonica on several tracks and contributes two spoken word pieces. As a big fan of both Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart, this album is one of my favorites. I think that although they clashed, the dynamic of the two of them together is awesome, and the combination of Beefheart on vocals and Zappa and The Mothers backing him up is pretty special. This album also contains some of my favorite Zappa songs. Most notably, "Carolina Hardcore Ecstasy," "Muffin Man," "200 Years Old," and the opener "Debra Kadabra," which is one of the finest Captain Beefheart performances ever. As much as I love this album, there was other awesome material from this tour that was recorded, too. Some of which have been released on other Zappa live albums. Like the original version of "The Torture Never Stops" with Captain Beefheart on vocals. Plus, there is literally a Happy Birthday song, so it was meant to be. Faces is definitely one of my absolute favorite of his album covers. It's a stunning piece of modern abstract art. This personal and dark mixtape is also one of my favorite pieces of Mac Miller's artistry too. I'm so thrilled my Mac Miller collection is now complete! With so much focus on the GND Series, the company hired a young designer from London. Focus shifted to PopBots that had styles that included goth looks, candy-colored hair, and adventurous makeup. Another focus was to allow sohwcase the doll's personality in the catalog. These decisions were met with enthusiasm as new collectors jumped in and LnL was seen as the leader in hyper realistic "bot babes" (a slang that spread around this time). Many of you know the moniker of the young designer who started this slight shift in the release schedule. DateAngel's first design was for the GO Series, which we present today. Jaco Pastorius // Jaco Pastorius Talking about mastermind musicians in my last post got me to thinking about Jaco Pastorius. I and many others think of Jaco as one of the greatest, most influential bass players of all time. On his self titled debut, playing along a few other big names in Jazz, like Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, he revolutionized the future of the bass guitar. He moved beyond single notes into chords and harmonics with a unique, innovative musical sensibility that made the instrument sound like an extension of himself. Portrait of Tracy is absolutely my favorite track. Last year I listened to it about 30 times in 3 weeks. It’s the only track to feature Pastorius solo on bass and was written as a tribute to his then girlfriend (later wife), Tracy Sexton. It’s so breathtaking I probably would’ve married him too if he wrote that for me. The rest of the album is pretty accessible in terms of jazz. I do admire the interesting instrument choices here. I can’t name any other jazz albums that feature a string section and steel drums.
