Cold Fact, the debut by American singer-songwriter Rodriguez was released in the US in 1970 and failed miserably. He gained some popularity in South Africa and Australia, and then faded into obscurity. Rumours about Rodrigeuz’s death years later fuelled the Academy Award winning 2012 documentary entitled “Searching For Sugar Man” which was centred around a search for Rodriguez in Cape Town to find out what happened to him. The film, of course, brought this album back into the spotlight. Hailed as far ahead of its time, Cold Fact sold over 200,000 copies after the documentary was released. A - A Vs Monkey Kong After a couple months delay, this finally arrived earlier this week. I do have to say that it was worth the wait. Taking a look at the final product, a lot of care was put into this. The hand-numbered outer fold-out sleeve adds a nice touch to the bigger existing elements of the original album. And I have special memories attached to the album itself. Since the album got a US release, the band played a few shows in the run up to its US release in 2000. The first one was at The Viper Room. My buddies and I witnessed what sounded like a pretty heated argument between Giles Perry and Dan Carter outside their tour bus. We were just hanging out, fanboying and waiting to ask them to sign our CDs... Later, they played another headline show at The Troubadour around the time that the album was finally released Stateside. And then they ended up supporting The Bloodhound Gang on their US tour. This was right around the time “The Bad Touch” was a huge hit so I imagine it got them some good exposure in the States. They ended up playing at The Palace in Hollywood when that tour got to L.A. Strangely, the follow-up album, Hi-Fi Serious, became their biggest-selling album in the UK. Chiodos - Devil The last album that the band will probably ever release and overall I think they peaked with Bone Palace, but this one’s got some high points, but there’s also some really awkward points where it kind of sounds like they don’t know where they want to go with their sound. Some songs sound kind of like worse versions of The Used songs. My favorite tracks are: Expensive Conversations in Cheap Motels, We’re Talking About Practice, Why The Muensters Matter, and Ole Fishlips is Dead Now.
Manic Street Preachers - Lifeblood (20th Anniversary Edition) Okay, I will be the first to admit I was not into this album when it first came out. Up to that point, it was my least favorite Manics album. Mainly because it was a Manics soft rock album. I get that they were trying to do something different and new from where they left off with Know Your Enemy, which I actually enjoyed. But this wasn’t the direction I was expecting. There are a few tracks from this era that I like - Empty Souls, Askew Road, Everything Will Be, Dying Breeds - but I really don’t reach for it to spin. But listening back to it now, it’s not that bad. I’m probably more forgiving of the Manics these days. And it’s likely that Rewind The Film and Futurology have replaced it was my least favorite album(s). Ha ha ha. I do wish they had included a version of Everything Will Be with the trombone bit. I still remember hearing the performance of that song from recordings of Glastonbury 2003 with Andy Cato from Groove Armada on trombone. For me, the trombone line made the song and gave a different but interesting feel for the Manics. And I was very disappointed when it was eventually relegated as a b-side with the trombone line removed. Then they announced their final album was coming out and I thought, man I've got to get a copy and check out their last record. . Am I ever surprised at how solid this album is. A double LP packed with almost an hour of music. I find the back half a little stronger than the front half. . There's lots of fun tracks on this record. "Future Primitive," is my top. "Johnny Libertine," is a other rager. "It's All Me," is another great. . I could have done without the, "Paint It Black," cover. Not that it's bad, but more so because it's so over done as a cover on heavy music. . This is the red, blue, and black tri-colour pie pressing.
