The Roadmap to Building Better Habits Ever wondered why some people seem good at doing certain things regularly, like exercising or studying, while others struggle?... Well, it's all about habits!... Let's explore how our brains work and how we can use that knowledge to build positive habits. Picture your brain as a big city, and every time you do something, like making your bed or reading, you're paving a road in that city. At first, the road might be bumpy and hard to navigate, just like doing something new can be tricky. But the more you travel that road, the smoother it becomes, and the easier it is to get to your destination. These roads in your brain are like pathways. When you do something repeatedly, your brain strengthens those pathways, making it easier for you to do that thing without even thinking about it. That's why it feels so effortless to brush your teeth in the morning – your brain has created a well-traveled pathway for that habit! So, if you want to build positive habits, like being kind to others or staying organized, you need to start by paving those roads consistently. It might feel challenging at first, like navigating through a new city, but the more you travel those roads, the smoother the journey becomes. Eventually, these habits become second nature, just like brushing your teeth. Keep paving those roads, and soon you'll be cruising through life with your positive habits! ©️ Calvin Patience #PositiveHabits #BrainPower #PracticeMakesHabits @Followers!

When we consistently, deliberately cause ourselves discomfort (in a controlled setting) we can train our bodies to respond in constructive ways. Example: Keenan, and how I handle things that come up with him. I haven’t shared this publicly until now, but Keenan was diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum on my birthday last year. One of my greatest fears for my son came true on that day (please don’t judge that, any diagnosis for our children is scary at first particularly when there’s a lot of unknowns to navigate). Autism looks different for every person that is diagnosed, and it’s created (in certain circumstances) pretty severe discomfort in my mind and heart. There have been many, many times where he responds to a situation differently than I anticipated, and I have to navigate my responses very carefully. I know I need to model the behaviors I would like to see in him. This is particularly challenging when I don’t know how to respond, which is happening more and more as he grows older. Because I have regularly and deliberately created discomfort for myself (using tools that I’m familiar with, like yoga and meditation) when a situation occurs that I cannot control and my autonomic nervous system begins to respond as all human bodies do (by tensing up, increasing my heart rate, increasing my blood pressure, feelings of fear/anger etc) and my mind starts feeding me thoughts about the situation (people are judging you, people are judging Keenan, get control of your kid etc) my first response isn’t to do whatever I can to remove that discomfort. It isn’t to react wildly or to allow that to take over my power. (Continued in comments)

Motivation is unreliable. It comes and goes. We can't depend on it. That's why it is so important to focus on forming practices, habits, and repetition, along with systems like planning and preparation. Motivation usually comes after action….. not before! The more you act, the more motivated you'll be. The more you have systems, processes, and routines to help yourself act, the more you can do it. Just like the snowball effect, the more you take action the more motivated you'll feel and the more you'll act! #motivation #fitness #lifestylechange #practicemakeshabits

My girlfriend and I used to conclude our weekly swims at the local community pool by saying something nice about ourselves in the mirror. Somedays, it was easy to think of things. Others, I would struggle to find ONE nice thing to say... Practicing being a little sweeter to myself today: Embracing this perfectly imperfect body. She's a DIVINE vessel for this DIVINE being. And I love her more and more every day. 🖤 She is strong. She is soft. She is curious. Being kind to ourselves is a muscle we have to flex. It takes time to build and become sustainable. Eventually, it will crowd out the unkind with its bulky badassery. Practice makes habits. Habits create new neuropathways in our brains. What do you love about yourself? Can you think of three positive things to say about you today? SHARE BELOW!

I wasn't going to post anything because my mother's day isn't full of joy or fun brunch dates. I don't want to put a type of energy out there👎You know because y'all mamas deserve your amazing day for all you do❤️ I have been practicing some little things to help feel more positive. Putting out the good vibes and getting them back from the universe. WOO stuff...my friend has been helpful in teaching and providing tiktoks and everything to help😍 One was about a money bowl. What you see here. I made it out of a cool turtle air plant pot I got the first year I met my best friend....I killed the air plant🤦‍♀️ Side note, a money bowl is made by placing pennies and rice and think of how abundant you will be while doing this🤘 I told my friend I made it and she said to put it in the NE corner of the house... This is where he lives. The NE corner of my house🥰🥰 Happy Mothers day mom always looking over me😘❤️❤️

Auditioning for @decktherunway by @fancybyfrancescawatson 😊💁🏾‍♀️😊. Always grateful 🙏🏾 for the opportunity! But how many times did I #practice before I went in?!? Who counted? ** Practice - From Start **Actual Walk - 13:38 ** Full Body/HeadShots - 15:20 ** Modeling Tips - 25:35 There’s definitely a style and grace to walking down the #runway. You’re not just ploddingly plopping yourself down the street. When I’m practicing in the mirror or recording, Im trying to remember how my angles and walk feels in whatever position I’m in because when you’re on the runway there is no mirror to see what you look like. You have to have #BodyMechanics memory to hit it just right, not to mention getting rid of the jitters! Trust me, how you feel you look is not always how you actually look, you might think it’s sassy but it’s ridiculously exaggerated.. you might feel your walking sultry but you’re actually looking like your dragging yourself down the runway 🤣🤣… and you can’t know what a good LOOKING walk, or a DECENT facial expression FEELS like if you’re not looking at yourself. You have ONE SHOT when you audition or walk down the runway. It lasts like 15 seconds. Be awkward backstage so you can kill it in real life! Tell me I’m lying @indiagants @itseringreen @libra.lalena @raelialewis @deathbedmodel @monifajansen. Here is the first part of the exposition for today. Recorded this many times for many different things and is always nice to go back to. My internal rhythm has gotten really quite good now and I can notice little asynchronous moments by a partial from time to time I will continue to use my met work on. Most of all, I did this on my harder Legere for exercise in phrasing and it really does help! #clarinet #mozartconcerto #mozartclarinetconcerto #clarinetexcerpts #bandaudition #orchestralauditions #auditionprep #shed #mozart #légère #practicemakeshabits

Some Gounod Ballet music from my shed today. Recorded this at the end of a long practice session, but it helped serve as a reminder to not force fast articulation and just think of it like a bouncing ball, not a sledgehammer. I may of been tired when I played this, but the work and progress is there. #clarinet #orchestralexcerpts #bandauditon #orchestralaudition #clarinetexcerpts #shed #practicemakeshabits #articulation #gounodfaust #gounod

Working today on my harder Legere reed today for an even harder phrasing exercise. Really takes a lot of air for this excerpt in general and I will keep working on smoothening it out. Here is an excerpt from Americans We by Henry Fillmore. This excerpt is on a lot of military band audition lists for high articulation and fast pace. The habits of successful people aren’t mysterious – they just take practice. You can start slow, integrating one or two of these habits at a time. You may be surprised at how helpful they are and how quickly they start to work. 1. Get Plenty of Sleep 😴 (7-9 hours per night according to the Sleep Foundation) 2. Eat Healthy 🥗 (feed your body nutrients that will give you energy) 3. Stay Active 🏋️‍♀️ (150 minutes of physical activity per week is recommended by the CDC) 4. Get Outside ☀️ (so many benefits of getting outside with nature) 5. Accept Failure ↘️ ("Failure is a prerequisite for great success") 6. Ask for Help 🤲 (Every successful person has a good suport system) 7. No Toxic Friends 💊 (“Look around you at the people you spend the most time with and realize that your life can’t rise any higher than your friendships.”) 8. Lose the Ego ♨️ (Don't let it stand in your way) #practicemakeshabits #habitsforsuccess

2/16/2021, 6:34:28 AM

Here is Brahms Trio part of the first movement. Love how this explores different emotions and pushes me to phrase thoughtfully and have a mature energy approach rather than an over romantic/excited one. Whenever I practice this, I always imagine what the other performers do too! Can’t wait to record this on Sunday. #clarinet #chambermusic #legerereeds #shedding #brahms #practicemakeshabits

2/13/2021, 7:31:51 AM

Really making some good progress towards this recording session this Sunday! Imagining the piano part and eighth note subdivision at all times. This movement is super nitpicky, but after some takes on A, you can really focus on fingers and relaxing rather than just sound. #clarinet #clarinetsolo #practicemakeshabits #shedding #legerereeds #lutoswaski

2/11/2021, 4:23:13 AM

Continuing a trend from yesterday doing the second movement. Gotta really keep focusing on phrasing and A clarinet helps develop it since it is more resistant and the sound is different so I learn to relax my fingers more too. #clarinet #clarinetsolo #practicemakeshabits #shedding #legerereeds

2/10/2021, 6:27:49 AM

Brahms 3 movement 2 was one of the first orchestral excerpts I have ever learned way back, but I should definitely play it more often. I have improved a lot on keeping the subdividing less free and more consistent so it is now pretty solid and shows in this excerpt. Really proud of this first take of this excerpt as this is on a prescreaning I will be doing. #clarinet #clarinetexcerpts #orchestralaudition #militarybandauditions #auditionprep #orchestralexcerpts #practicemakeshabits #shedding #legerereeds #brahms

2/6/2021, 6:00:35 AM

Tchaikovsky 6: Absolutely love this excerpt and how when done right, even calms me when I am done playing it. It truly goes beyond the ink and is so soothing. This one is loose, but there are times where you need to subdivide eight notes in the ties. #clarinet #clarinetexcerpts #orchestralexcerpts #orchestralaudition #auditionprep #legerereeds #tchaikovsky #shedding #practicemakeshabits

2/5/2021, 5:58:18 AM

Sibelius 1 movement 3 is a really fast and all articulated. Some context of this excerpt is it is with the low strings and is a very fast soli. Really hard to excecute so I need to relax whenever I play it. Slow practice and slurred practice help. #clarinet #clarinetexcerpts #sibelius #orchestralexcerpts #orchestralaudition #auditionprep #legerereeds #shedding #practicemakeshabits

2/3/2021, 6:00:54 AM

Absolutely love those excerpt and it has so much more minute details besides nailing the two G’s. Gotta constantly subdivide eighth notes and do dynamics which was a challenge in the space I was in. I honestly don’t ply this excerpt as much as I should, but I will add it to my regular rotation as it is sometimes called. #clarinet #clarinetexcerpts #orchestralexcerpts #orchestralaudition #auditionprep #shedding #legerereeds #practicemakeshabits #beethoven

2/2/2021, 5:42:38 AM

I absolutely love this solo and after the hard work with rehearsals, recording, and shedding, it just feels right to do this excerpt which is deceptively easy, but you must subdivide 16ths throughout. It feels so good to play though just all within a 6th and is a great way to cool down the chops after a long weekend of grinding. #clarinet #clarinetexcerpts #orchestralexcerpts #orchestralaudition #auditionpreparation #shedding #legere #practicemakeshabits #tchaikovsky

2/1/2021, 5:59:41 AM

Capriccio Espongol Movements One and Three Solos are so much fun, but require PATIENCE and diligent practice. I used to hate these excerpts, but they have grown on me after I started to practice them very relaxed and think of them as a dance. The power of slow practice is revealed once again. #clarinet #clarinetexcerpts #orchestralexcerpts #orchestralaudition #auditionpreparation #shedding #legerereeds #practicemakeshabits #rimskykorsakov

1/31/2021, 5:45:41 AM

Here’s a first take of Shostakovich 1 movement 2! This excerpt is very fun and requires lots of slow practice and subdividing eight notes. It was a good thing I got this first take cause my lip started bleeding afterwards. Darn dry and cold weather, guess I will be drinking more water and applying chapstick. #clarinet #clarinetexcerpts #orchestralexcerpts #orchestralaudition #auditionpreparation #shedding #shostakovich #practicemakeshabits

1/30/2021, 5:45:05 AM

1/29/2021, 4:15:18 AM

The second excerpt of Kolday is less often called than the first one (and personal favorite one). Haven’t practiced this one as much, but got the dust off of it fairly well today. 1/27/2021, 11:29:42 PM

Today, I really wanted to start refining the different types of articulation I use and aim for them to feel more relaxed. Working on feeling all types of articulation as simply the speed it reaches the reed and the amount of time it is on the reed really helps. I’ll start to notice some really good progress soon. #clarinet #articulation #workingonweaknesses #shedding #scales #kellstaccatostudies #practicemakeshabits

1/26/2021, 8:31:10 PM

Here is another one of my favorites, Brahms 3 movement 1. I actually got this first take on a Legere (which I don’t usually play this excerpt on) so I was very happy with the take. When I practice this excerpt, I do subdivided eighth notes and think about my role with the other woodwinds as this isn’t really a solo for the whole time. #clarinet #orchestralexcerpts #orchestralaudition #auditionprep #brahms #practicemakeshabits #shedding #legerereeds #clarinetexcerpts

1/26/2021, 5:20:13 AM

Did some major scales from Baermann today with various articulations along with other exercises on pitches and varying articulation. Concentration on a wide variety of different articulation types and how they feel contacting the reed and making it relax. For day 1, this isn’t bad, but will only get better and I was surprised what I can do on Legere articulation wise as well. #clarinet #articulation #practicemakeshabits #scales #improvingweaknesses

1/25/2021, 8:29:09 PM

The first excerpt from Kolday is one of my absolute favorites to play and practice. It just feels so satisfying to have the fingers float over this excerpt after all this practice I have done (especially slow practice and it feels good to let the right notes just float). In this series, I demonstrated subdivision practice on the second half of the excerpt, slow practice of the cadenza and brief technical spots, and a full run of the first part of the excerpt. #clarinet #kodály #orchestralexcerpts #orchestralaudition #auditionpreparation #practicemakeshabits #legerereeds #shedding #clarinetexcerpts

1/25/2021, 2:08:23 AM

Today’s practice was on the second movement excerpt from the Scottish symphony! This one is deceptively easy looking, but has lot of minute like dynamics (over the practice I discovered I was playing the beginning too loud), 16th note subdivisions, and different articulations that need to be executed correctly. In this, I have several different videos showcasing a product and some metronome work I did. A lot of work on subdivisions, articulation, and dynamics is off camera. #clarinet #mendelsohn #orchestralexcerpts #orchestralaudition #practicemakeshabits #legerereeds #auditionlife #auditionpreperation #shedding #clarinetexcerpts

Today was all about Beethoven 6, the underplayed Movement 3 excerpt. I practiced it with lots of different eighth note subdivisions, very slowly worked up the last two bars, and with articulated eighth notes as well! If you want to end the START/STOP cycle of taking care of yourself, bookmark this post.    And if there is something here that confuses you, let’s break it down…    1️⃣ WHAT IS WRONG WITH FOCUSING ON OUTCOMES?    Well… when you treat your health journey like a destination to be reached, you convince yourself the work is done. When really… the work has just begun.    Health is not an outcome - it is an ongoing PRACTICE of staying honest about what nourishes you and depletes you in ALL areas of your life.    2️⃣ LET’S TALK STRATEGY    If you don’t have a plan for how you are going to show up for yourself… well… you are not going to.    If you have a plan that asks you to overhaul your normal way of life overnight… your brain will panic and you will not show up for yourself (at least not for very long).    3️⃣ LACK OF CONSISTENT PRACTICE IS A HABIT    Rationalizing, compromising and negotiating your way out of the work you SAID you would do can easily become a HABIT. All a habit is, in fact, is something you have done SO many times you can do it without thinking.     Your current results are a direct result of your current habits.    4️⃣ THE BEST NEWS EVER!    You will NEVER be perfect and your journey is supposed to include a lot of detours because that is where all of the learning and growth happens. Making mistakes means you are learning new things and that is how change works! #embracethemess    If you could use more help with these things… DO NOT miss the FREE Healthiest Year Yet event (1/4-1/8) where I teach you how to show up for yourself with more consistency and ease. It can take somewhere between 18 and 256 days to form a new habit. And an average of 66 days. Ok, so now what 🤔? First of all, if we don’t practice daily, it will take us at least three weeks and up to a year or longer to form a new habit. A new pattern that we feel is the same way of „unbreakable“ that is so familiar. This means we need to manage our expectations. Take them down ⬇️. Really Down ⬇️⬇️⬇️. Before we say, that didn’t work out for me...did we try it for a year? It might take longer to form a new neurological path. But we will see the results of our new habit much earlier. One day smoke-free, the heart already has time to recover. One workout and endorphins are boosting 💥✨through our system. Key 🔑 to success 📈 ➡️ adapted expectations ➕ focus on the immediate positive results ➡️ consistency in the long run = new habit ✅💫🤗 💥 What new habit do you wish to start, and what is stopping you? I am curious to read about it 🤗 _____________________________________ Join me for a free call (Link in Bio). #elitecoaching #habits #habitchange #habitchangecoach #behaviours #newhabits #successhabits #neuegewohnheiteneinüben #changemanagement #changemanagementcoach #changecoaching #veränderung #persönlichkeitsentwicklung #practicemakeshabits #personalgrowth #personaldevelopment #personalevolution #becomeabetteryou #inspireddaily #selfgrowthjourney #focusonyourgoals #learnandgrow #reinventyourself #youarepowerful #changeyourthoughts #powerfulquotes #createalifeyoulove #createyourfuture #findyourpurpose #successmindset

Coach Kara: Practice Makes??? Swimmers: Habits!!!!!! . One of the many practice mottos Coach Kara loved and said all the time. “Practice makes habits”. Whether they are good or bad habits you are creating them daily at practice. . Today, let’s take inventory of all your practice habits. See which habits you like and want to continue and find ones you’d like to change. At practice this evening, make one change. Start creating a new habit and see what happens. Make today great. . #practicemakeshabits #newroutines #coachkara #4ward #moving4ward #4W #streamlinestrong #iamstrong #iamafighter #confidence @tuureward

If you want to end the START/STOP cycle of showing up for yourself so you can improve your health, bookmark this post.    And if there is something here that confuses you, let’s break it down…    1️⃣ WHAT IS WRONG WITH FOCUSING ON OUTCOMES?    Well… when you treat your health journey like a destination to be reached, you convince yourself the work is done once you arrive. When really… the work has just begun.    Health is not an outcome - it is an ongoing PRACTICE of staying honest about what nourishes you and depletes you in ALL areas of your life and at different ages and stages of life. 3️⃣ LACK OF CONSISTENT PRACTICE IS A HABIT    Rationalizing, compromising, and negotiating your way out of the work you SAID you would do can easily become a HABIT. #embracethemess    If you could use more help with these things… DO NOT miss my FREE online masterclass next week.
