Young male lions disperse while females stay with their natal prides. This male from the “honey Badger” pride is about 3 years old right after Lund the time he will venture off for a new territory to defend. He will gain size, grow in his mane over the next two years when he reaches his prime and has the experience to displace an aging territory holder. Predator proof enclosures are key to the safety of our cattle herds. Even a thin sheet of canvas can provide a sufficient barrier between lions and cattle. We are using two enclosures for herds in Eretsha and three more ready for deployment in neighboring villages when additional support is raised. No, this is not an early New Year’s post- the fireworks are for a different reason. Last night lions ventured close to one of our partner villages and in an attempt to deter them from getting any closer, we used firecrackers. The sound, the lights and the shock provide a decent deterrent. We fired two in the air and our target lions got the message and high-tailed it south- away from harm- nearly 9 km in a couple hours. Central to our community engagement are the Lion Naming Ceremonies, where villagers have an opportunity unity to name our study animals for a deeper connection. This week we named three newly collared lions and the names reflect the feelings of the different communities. Mariri means “Big Mane”, he is the male located near Gunotsoga Village, the former territory of Zikwerwa’s Mate. This name narrowly beat out Mazimbirwa which means “fat” or “constapated”. Another village that has seen a significant rise in livestock losses to lions has named two males Twashwena (meaning “disagree”) and Mwakuhukapo (meaning “don’t return”). Living with lions is a challenge and we are doing out best to support communities even in the face of losses. The Queen is gone. We have lost many lions since the start of our program, but none stings as hard as this loss. Mayenga was the first female we ever collared back in 2015. At the time she was in a pride with her mother, Mamalapo, and 6 cubs. Over the years they have produced more cubs successfully than any other pride. They shifted east and stayed south of the villages. But trouble would find them. Unattended cattle roam into their range and conflicts occasionally occur. Through it all Mayenga survived until her 12th year. Last time we saw her she was with her pride that had at least 16 individuals including 9 cubs. They are fit and strong. Now a young female Oqawawaiko! At night, under the cover of darkness, we spark a red filtered light to see two previously unknown lions. They are traversing the floodplains south of Beetsha Village. These floodplains are full of unattended cattle that are continuously falling prey to area lions. We managed to dart and collar a second female in Secharo’s pride. We were happy to discover that her 5 cubs are still alive although three are limping. We hope they are able to make a full recovery. Also, there were three additional adult females joining them making the pride 13 individuals. We are cautious to celebrate as they have shifted range to within in a few I’m of Beetsha Village where their new habit of eating livestock will certainly get them into trouble. The additional collar means that if one female meets a unfortunate fate we will not lose track of the time hole pride. Secharo and her sister are out hunting warthogs. They are experts! We recently heard that they lost 2 of their 5 cubs- which is really sad. In Botswana and southern Africa in general there are many communities that live alongside wildlife. The Pride in Our Prides Project run by @clawsconservancy aims to reduce human wildlife conflict and enable the communities and wildlife to coexist within the same areas. One of the ways in which they do this is to assist the communities in protecting their livestock again predators such as lions by building predator proof bomas for the livestock to go into at night. Muka Mokokore and his coalition mate have secured the Mapula Airstrip area where they have connected with Secharo and her sister. Important Update: Recently two young male lions were seen in Gudigwa Village in the Northern Okavango. Understandably people were scared. We were called in with the Department of Wildlife and National Parks to assess the situation and help. Despite repeated attempted with vehicles to encourage the lions to leave they would not budge. That night they killed a calf. In the morning we returned to find the owner of the calf got on the trail of the lions with a rifle to exact revenge. We caught up to him in time and called in veterinarian Rob Jackson to dart and help translocate the lions. Using a helicopter and flying low over thick vegetation we were only able to get a shot at one. We put a tracking collar on him and removed him seven mies from the village with hopes that he will join his coalition mate shortly after. Now this male is part of our alert system so villagers can receive warnings when these lions approach. We followed up with the cattle owner a few days later and he expressed gratitude that we did something to help although this story is not over. With so many rural communities living among the wildlife, one of the best ways to reduce human wildlife conflict is to engage the communities in the conservation efforts. The crowd listens intently and provides candidate names then they vote. Last week the people of Beetsha Village named a new female and male lion from Mayenga’s Pride. The female was named Nxawakaiko which means “Beautiful Lady” and the male Nxaranga named after the location of a famous hunt. The three primary goals of our Herding Program are healthy cattle, restoring rangelands and protecting cattle from predator attack. Central to all of those objectives is a mobile boma (livestock enclosure) that is easy to put up and transport to new pastures. When lions kill cattle the hunter becomes the hunted. If lions and people are going to thrive on the landscape together we need to solve this issue. CLAWS Conservancy established a 2-pronged approach using TECH and TRADITION to mitigate conflict. Our Lion Alert System distributed 12,600 warnings last year. Our communal herd has lost 2 cattle to lions in 3 years. We are scaling up in 2022 to have a greater impact!
