GRAPHIC PHOTOS: It is with great sadness that we report a recent poison event. Though the poison was set for Mariri, the territorial lion, it killed 45 white backed vultures as collateral damage. Working closely with the Department of Wildlife and National Parks we mapped the area, documented the scene and burned the remains so that other scavengers don’t fall prey. We started CLAWS in 2014 specifically to stop poison use that killed over 25 lions (and scores of vulture) in 2013. Through community outreach, lion monitoring (and Lion Alert System) and Communal Herding Programs the lion population rebounded and only three previous cases of poisoning have been recorded- in 9 years- with the last one 4 years ago. That is until today. Our two year grant with the EU has come to close. Through this funding we were able to develop our Communal Herding Program, build the first quarantine boma and have three rounds of beef sales that generated between 25-40% greater revenues for local farmers. The purpose of the grant was to explore opportunities for Commodity Based Trade and we showed there is tremendous potential and markets! A Holistic approach to conservation must include benefits for local people. This is a truly remarkable day for us! After 4.5 years of operating our Communal Herding Program solely in Eretsha Village, we have built a new herd in Ndorotsha Cattle Post (a Satellite of Gunotsoga Village). This was years in the making and thanks to determination from our field staff and our partner communities who see the benefits. Last week our team was honored to receive a prized breeding Brahman bull from President Masisi! This bull will help strengthen the genetic stick of our herding program and increase the marketability for iur be f sales. The President, a vice President, Minister of Agriculture and Director of Veterinary Services all toured our predator proof boma, shared stories with our staff and showed support for our efforts to protect the livelihoods of local farmers and wildlife. This was a wonderful opportunity also for our staff to meet and get photographs with the President. One of our staff said they cried “tears of joy”. We hope this represents even greater coordination between our program and government at the highest levels. Spot the froggie!! With the lovely rain we've had, the delta chorus is in full force! We're getting quite a few visits from the Reed Frog, commonly found in the delta. They're almost like little chameleons, changing color according to their surroundings - brightly coloured ones, tiger-like spotted ones, red and white ones, plain colors...they take impressive leaps and have the cutest little red feet that stick to just about anything! Predator proof enclosures are key to the safety of our cattle herds. Even a thin sheet of canvas can provide a sufficient barrier between lions and cattle. We are using two enclosures for herds in Eretsha and three more ready for deployment in neighboring villages when additional support is raised. No, this is not an early New Year’s post- the fireworks are for a different reason. Last night lions ventured close to one of our partner villages and in an attempt to deter them from getting any closer, we used firecrackers. The sound, the lights and the shock provide a decent deterrent. We fired two in the air and our target lions got the message and high-tailed it south- away from harm- nearly 9 km in a couple hours. Central to our community engagement are the Lion Naming Ceremonies, where villagers have an opportunity unity to name our study animals for a deeper connection. This week we named three newly collared lions and the names reflect the feelings of the different communities. Mariri means “Big Mane”, he is the male located near Gunotsoga Village, the former territory of Zikwerwa’s Mate. This name narrowly beat out Mazimbirwa which means “fat” or “constapated”. Another village that has seen a significant rise in livestock losses to lions has named two males Twashwena (meaning “disagree”) and Mwakuhukapo (meaning “don’t return”). Living with lions is a challenge and we are doing out best to support communities even in the face of losses.
