A little bit of cuteness for the weekend 💫 Lion cubs are all born with spots on their legs and stomachs, which on these cubs are quite obvious even at a few months old! These spots serve as camouflage for young cubs, helping them to blend in with long grass and vegetation and so avoid detection by other predators when the females leave them to go and hunt. The spots will fade as lions age, usually disappearing from the stomach first, but spots on the legs are still obvious on sub-adults at 2-3 years old. These too will fade with time but are even visible on some adults, particularly adult females. When ID’ing lions from our camera trap surveys, these spots can be quite useful in helping to distinguish between different individual cubs or even sub-adults in the same survey. . . . #lions #cubs #spots #okavangodelta #conservation #pantheraleo #research #lionresearch

“‘There’s never been a study of this scale and over such a large and diverse geographical area with such a variety of habitats,' said Winston Vickers, a co-author of the study." - Director of @camountainlions with @ucdavisvetmed 🔥 Hot off the press!: Puma research our dog teams sniffed for, featured in the @latimes! 😕 While it's exciting to finally share these results, the news isn't great for pumas... "Scientists have completed the first comprehensive estimate of mountain lions in California, a vital statistic needed to shape puma-friendly land-use decisions and ensure that the predators can find room to roam, mate, and find prey. ❤️‍🩹 The total number of mountain lions is estimated to be between 3,200 and 4,500, which is thousands fewer than previously thought. The count was conducted by state and university scientists who used GPS collar data and genetic information from scat samples [👈🏽 that's us! 🐕] to model population densities..." 🌊🌲🏔️ From the wind-swept ocean views of Big Sur to the desert ecosystems of @anzaborregodesertsp to the snow-capped Eastern Sierras, and the giant redwoods of Northern CA, our #ConservationDogs, Winnie, Scooby, Pips, Whisper, Filson, & retired Hooper, Ranger, Skye and Athena lent their noses to puma research to assist in this first of its kind population estimate for pumas.  🦁 "Mountain lions as a species are not listed as endangered. But in Southern CA, vehicle strikes, rat poison, inbreeding, wildfires, poaching, urban encroachment and freeway systems are all contributing to what scientists call an 'extinction vortex.' There’s an almost 1 in 4 chance that the charismatic cats could be extinct in the Santa Monica and Santa Ana Mountains within 50 years." 🔗Article LIB & be on the look out for the publication of this reasearch later in ‘24!! 🐾 Work conducted with @californiadfw, under permits. 🎥: by @cheezifs 🦁💩🧬 #liondogs #bigcatresearch #mountainlions #pumaconcolor

We're trotting down memory lane as we reflect on some of the amazing experiences our team has had over this year. For Yvonne, our research department intern, one of her highlights was taking part in the collaborative lion survey in August coordinated by Kalahari Research and Conservation Trust (KRC). Of her favourite part, she says: "I really enjoyed chilling with a pride of lions in KD1 during the lion survey, and giving them crazy names like 'Mothers', 'Cuddles', 'Sleepyhead' and 'Emo'". It is no doubt that not only will the results of the survey be valuable to planning and programming relating to lions and other big cats in the area, but the experience will make for a wonderful story to tell in many days, weeks and months down the line. #onwardwegrow #cheetahbotswana #cheetah #research #wildliferesearch #conservationresearch #Botswana #kalaharidesert #lion #lionresearch #wildlifetracking

The bond of brothers ❤️ . . . I absolutely love watching young male lions grow up. They are boisterous, playful, mischievous and brave (sometimes too brave for their own good). Usually around the age of 2 to 3, they start to get pushed out of the prides into which they were born. This is a tenuous and testing time. Watching this transition elicits a rollercoaster of emotions - as the pride that once nurtured them now nurtures new cubs, and the fathers that once so fiercely protected them now see them as competition, they very quickly get thrust into the reality of having to provide for themselves. You feel so sorry for them as they get pushed out, and at the same time so proud when you see that they are managing to cope by themselves ❤️ . . . We’ve been following these two for more than a year now as part of our study into dispersal of males in the Okavango, as they try to maintain the bond with their mom’s and sisters, sometimes get beaten up for it, and slowly get pushed the periphery of what is familiar, all while trying to stay out of the way of their fathers and other rogue males. Through this all their bond grows stronger - and this is going to be so important for their future. The bond between brothers in the lion kingdom will be key to their success. They will hunt together, spend most of their time together and defend each other, and one day back each other to take on adult males from another pride to claim their females as their own. There’s still a long time to go for these two before that happens though, so for now we can only watch in hope and anticipation that they will follow in their father’s footsteps and one day have young males of their own. . . #lions #research #bigcats #conservation #lionresearch #okavangodelta #swampcats #pantheraleo #bondofbrothers

Mugie Conservancy plays a pivotal role in lion research through collaboration with organizations like Lion Landscapes, a dedicated lion conservation entity in Africa. Together, they engage with local stakeholders to develop holistic initiatives fostering the welfare of lions, their prey, the surrounding habitat, and the neighboring communities. Through the systematic collection of essential wildlife data, these teams actively contribute to Lion Landscapes' efforts. Lion Landscapes provides invaluable qualitative insights into the behavior and activities of lions. The overarching goal of this project is to propel lion conservation forward by deepening our comprehension of these majestic felines. This increased knowledge is crucial in effectively addressing the complex interplay of human-livestock-wildlife conflicts. Ultimately, the collaborative efforts aim to create a positive impact on both lion well-being and the harmony between local communities and wildlife. 🔄 @maxlovatelli Learn More www.lionlandscapes.org/ #LionConservation #ProtectingLions #LionResearch #CommunityPartnerships #ConservationInnovation #SavingBigCats #LionLandscapes #WildlifeProtection #HumanWildlifeConflict #LionHabitat #WildlifeConservation #LionBehavior #AfricaConservation

I've just reviewed a thesis chapter, and future paper, which uses data from a camera trap survey in Zimbabwe which I was fortunate enough to help with the deployment of in 2018. After my Diploma at the University of Oxford's Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU) ended in 2017, I was awarded a Post Panther scholarship. For five months, I processed camera trap images for the Trans Kalahari Predator Programme. Specifically, I assigned individual identities to spotted hyaena. The scholarship culminated in a one-month trip to the project's fieldsite in Zimbabwe. Farm 41, the base of what was originally known as Hwange Lion Research, was both my accommodation and office. From there, we deployed Cuddeback and Panthera camera traps over 2000 square kilometres. This meant a lot of driving, which was very different from my usual fieldwork in Peru. It took a bit of getting used to. The car was often mega hot, but at the same time we were able to see so much wildlife (swipe for photos). In the early mornings I would sit on top of the vehicle with Andrea who would tell me stories from his work in anti-poaching days and teach me about the wildlife. I learned that the animal to fear the most was a lone male buffalo. Inevitably, our drives became too long to be feasible within a day and so we spent a few nights camping in the bush. This was quite an experience for an African-bush-newbie. Learning to not wander far from the vehicle, to be on the lookout for leopards while using the "bathroom", and trying to sleep to the sounds of lions roaring and hyaenas cackling, after an evening around the campfire where the guys told me every possible story about lions walking through camps, elephants squashing vehicles, and hyaenas dragging people from their tents by their faces ... safe to say I didn't sleep much! I did, however, find a whole new appreciation for my ability to walk through the Amazon rainforest, alone, where large animals are absent and the biggest risk is a falling tree. I have a lot more I could write about Zimbabwe. For now, here are a few snapshots from the field. #zimbabwe #hwange #hwangenationalpark #africanwildlife #africawildlife #africananimals

World Lion Day! I know most of you are here for rainforest content, but another significant part of my life as a conservation biologist was working for one of the world’s leading lion scientists, Zimbabwean Andrew Loveridge, now my PhD supervisor. Cecil the Lion was one of his study animals. When I was a student at WildCRU my project was on lions. Using data from the Zambian Carnivore Programme @zcp_zambia and supervised by Egil Droge, I looked at the performance of call-ins as a relatively cheap and fast method for estimating abundance and monitoring populations of the African lion. I was offered a scholarship and then a job working for Andy and the Trans-Kalahari Predator Programme (TKPP). I spent years sharing an office with lion researchers, lived with lion researchers, saw countless talks on lions, was surrounded by photos of lions, and I'm still sent videos of lions every week from Zimbabwean friends. When I arrived at WildCRU I was shocked to learn that lions are not doing good! Recent research from my colleagues at the TKPP shows that there are only around 23,000 lions left in Africa and that Africa’s lion population has declined by ~75% over the last five decades. The baseline population size was around 92,000 lions in 1970! Lions only occupy 34% of the range that they occupied in the 1970s. The TKPP began as the Hwange Lion Project in 1999, established by Andrew Loveridge and David Macdonald (founder of WildCRU). In 2013 it expanded into Botswana and became the TKPP. In 2018 Andy and David funded a field trip to Zimbabwe where I stayed at the headquarters of Hwange Lion Research and assisted the survey team, Justin Seymour-Smith and Andrea Sibanda, in deploying a camera trap survey. On my first day we saw lions. A dream come true for a girl who grew up obsessively reciting The Circle of Life and whose first trip to the “pictures” was to The Lion King. I could write about the TKPP all day, but there is a word limit. Instead, if you are interested, follow @tkpp_wildcru You can also follow current team members @looking4lions and @jessisden If you want to learn more about lion conservation in Zimbabwe, I recommend Andy's book Lionhearted.

The Transvaal lion, also known as the South African lion or Panthera leo krugeri, is a subspecies of lion that is native to the Transvaal region of South Africa. However, it is important to note that the classification of lion subspecies is currently under debate, and some researchers consider all African lions as a single subspecies, Panthera leo leo. Historically, the Transvaal lion was found in the northeastern parts of South Africa, including the former province of Transvaal, which encompassed areas such as Kruger National Park and surrounding regions. This subspecies was known for its large size, with males often reaching lengths of up to 10 feet (3 meters) from nose to tail and weighing around 400-500 pounds (180-230 kilograms). Females were generally smaller, weighing around 250-350 pounds (110-160 kilograms). #TransvaalLion #SouthAfricanLion #PantheraLeoKrugeri #LionConservation #KrugerNationalPark #WildlifeProtection #LionPride #BigCats #SafariLife #RoarOfTheLion #LionKingdom #LionLove #AfricanWildlife #ProtectOurLions #LionHabitat #EndangeredSpecies #ConservationEfforts #WildlifePreservation #SavannahLife #LionResearch

One of the highlights of our trip was the opportunity to meet Dr. Philip Stander. A Cambridge-educated, Namibian-born scientist, he has spent more than 25 years in the field here in the Hoanib River floodplain documenting Desert-Adapted Lions. Barefooted and leading an ascetic life, he has spent decades alone in the field studying the lions of this region. Every now and then, he drops in at the Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp and chats with enthusiastic visitors about his life’s passion. Stephanie loved it! Take note of the bare feet! While camera traps frequently assist in identifying previously unseen predators, they also occasionally capture those we already know. This is “Thor”, a 9-year-old male lion collared during a joint expedition between Asilia and TAWIRI (Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute) in 2021. The collar provides GPS coordinates, allowing researchers to determine the home range of the lion. Using live telemetry data, the lion can be tracked at any time making for a fun and informative guest experience. #douglasbellecoresearchstation #followthejourney #usanguwetlands #ruahanationalpark #tanzania #eastafrica #research #cameratrap #citizenscience #lion #lionresearch #telemetry #collaredlion #asiliaafrica

This heavily pregnant adult lioness was recently spotted by our guests in the close vicinity of Usangu Expedition Camp, seemingly looking for an appropriate den. She is known to our research team as “Emma”. The average gestation period is around 110 days – and a litter is usually between one and four cubs – birthed in a secluded location such as a cave or a thicket away from the rest of the pride. The mother will then relocate to a new den every couple of weeks to avoid the scent of her den attracting predators. After approximately seven weeks, she will introduce her cubs to the wider pride. We will continue to follow Emma and will post further updates as they become available. 📷: Gysemberg party #douglasbellecoresearchstation #followthejourney #usanguwetlands #ruahanationalpark #tanzania #eastafrica #research #lion #lionresearch #asiliaafrica #asiliapreditorhub

A “lion landscape” is a landscape that supports a viable population of wild lions, or any other pinnacle carnivore species. To do this it must also support healthy wild prey populations, healthy habitat, and benefit local people. That is why the work that Lion Landscapes is doing is so important. The project envisions a world where people and viable populations of lion species coexist and thrive. Their mission is to ensure that ecosystems support people, lions and their prey for future generations. Lion Landscapes works in Tanzania, Kenya and Zambia to develop innovative grassroots approaches to stop lion loss, reduce the costs of wildlife on local people and unlock the value of conservation. The ALERT research team in Chizarira National Park has just completed 6 weeks in the field in an effort to collar lions and elephants for the research that they are carrying out on these two vulnerable species. We work in partnership with the Parks Authority and with WWF. We have had many sleepless nights huddled in a camouflaged tent waiting for lions to come up to a meat-bait hung from a tree. We had one exciting night when a big male leopard came up, ate some bait and then sauntered off. Many similar nights were spent out with no success, so we decided to use a baited drop-door cage. We had immediate success when a big male lion was caught, sedated and collared and two nights later a lioness was collared. Success at last! We have been following these two lions and whilst the lioness has remained in the general area, the male has been moving between the capture site and the various deep gorges and rivers to the east #africanlion #africanwildlife #lion #lionresearch #wildlifetagging #wildlifemonitoring #wildliferesearch #chizarira #zimbabwe #Africa

Chizarira National Park (1910km2 in extent), lies in the north of Zimbabwe approximately 30kms south of Lake Kariba. We work closely with Park Management. It was World Ranger day recently. As a tribute to park rangers we share this photo of a ranger who accompanied us when we were tracking a collared lion in Chizarira. The projects in Chizarira National Park include research on lions and elephants in an attempt to obtain demographics, occupancy and movement data. We collar selected individuals and follow them via downloads from satellite and also follow-up by tracking on the ground. Other projects include vegetation monitoring; insect biodiversity assessments; bird records, and large predator occupancy using spoor surveys and camera traps. Regular updates will be given on the projects and we hope that you will embark on this conservation journey with us on one of the most unspoiled parks in Zimbabwe

Happy Lion Day! Lions are the most socialble of all big cats with up to 30 individuals per pride, depending on the availabilityof food and water. Interestingly this also affects gender roles and responsibilities with the females being the main hunters, as the males guard the pride's territory and take care of the young during the hunt. Get in touch for a front row seat to witness their tactically hunting game, some playing 'center' and others 'wing'. Feel the adrenaline rush as they showcase their admirable teamwork and sign up for the once in a lifetime opportunity to monitor and track the lions with the @marapredatorconservation program for an even better understanding of the 'kings of the jungle'. #safarisbychameleon #lionday #worldlionday #wildlifeprotection #wildlifeconservation #wildlife #wildlifeexperience #wildlifeencounters #lionprotection #lionconservation #marapredatorconservationprogramme #liontracking #wildlifesafari #lionmonitoring #lionresearch #kenyasafaris #masaimara #kenya #africa #safari Photo credit: @michaelmansell

This cute kid is the grandson of late Cecil, the famous lion of Hwange National Park. We were lucky enough to observe this little one, his siblings, mom and aunties. Taken with my Nikon D500 and the 70-200mm/ f2.8 whilst on safari with @africanbushcamps

Today I was a research assistant to Ingela Jansson who is the founder of the Kope Lion project in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Our mission today was to identify all the lion Cubs in the various prides around Ndutu by their facial features and unique patterns of their whisker spots. I captured the photo images whilst Ingela drew their facial features. We were then able to update the Ndutu Safari Lodge “Lion Board”. 31 individual lions in one day in the area. We estimate there to be 50 lions in the area. @ndutusafarilodge @kopelion @epicprivatejourneys #lionconservation #lionresearch

The President of Chad recently visited Zakouma National Park in Chad and was really impressed by the work being done. He encouraged Chadians to visit the park - which is really important as developing domestic tourism is critical in terms of increasing the resilience of tourism revenue. @AfricanParks in Chad are grantees of the LRF, and are supporting a combination of lion research and law enforcement there. The research is designed to identify what factors are limiting population growth so that @AfricanParks will be able to respond to this by engaging communities in those areas and increasing protection. The study has already discovered that there are more lions than previously thought in the driest parts of the park. 👏 Photo of lion cubs in Zakouma National Park by Peter Lindsey #zakoumanationalpark #lion #lions #lioness #lioncub #bigcats #lionconservation #lionrecovery #lionresearch #bigcatsofig #zakouma #chad

Tools of the trade. My grandpa always called these the ‘killer claws’. The idea being if this claw hooked in, it was the end of whatever it had attached to. The dewclaw acts like a thumb, and has a different direction of impact than the other claws and in a sense forms kind of like an anchor to prevent the other 4 claws from just tearing through the hide of a prey item. They are a typically a little bigger and a little more rounded. This young male’s dewclaws were definitely healthy. #wildlifebiology #houndsmen #pumas #capturework #IDFG #lionresearch

Starting the new year with a bang! Placing a GPS tracking collar on a young-adult male lion. He starts to hang out more and more by himself. A GPS collar was placed to track his movements and see where he likes to hang out and to see if he is successful with hunting. At the same time I re-adjusted the big females collar, as she gained some lick-down kilos 😉. All sitting nicely again. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #wildlifeveterinarian #problemanimal #lion

I still remember the excitement of seeing the first litter of the lion pride after I started studying them for 2 years... ⁣🦁 ⁣ Lions can actually breed very fast when prey are plenty. And that’s the reason why the reserve where I worked at decided to use contraceptives on the lions when they first introduced the cats to the area. The contraceptives, however, had seriously disrupted their social dynamics, resulting in a few unfortunate fights and deaths.⁣ ⁣ Animal behaviour and social dynamics often received less attention in reintroduction research, yet they are so fundamentally important for successful conservation.⁣ ⁣ #lionresearch #Africa #savannah #bigcat #Panthera #Pantheraleo #nature #wildlife #wildlifephotography #naturephotography #felids #ecology #socialbehaviour #animalbehaviour #socialdynamics #socialcats #big5 #largecarnivore #roar #lions #lionpride #lioncub

I had fun editing this one! The lighting was a bit harsh, but it made for a good black and white opportunity! This is a young male lion who was a part of a pride mostly in the Moremi Game Reserve - but on a stroke of luck, the pride came into the neighboring concession I was researching in. This was very exciting since the research organization I was assisting didn’t know the dynamics of this pride too well. . . . #lion #africanlion #okavango #okavangodelta #okavangolions #botswana #africa #wildlife #wildlifephotography #nature #naturephotography #natureshooters #blackandwhite #blackandwhitephotography #wildlifeconservation #predatorconservation #lionresearch #yourshotphotographer #canonphotography #canon #canonusa #sigmalens
